Although fantasy, these books have had some pretty serious exploration of good, evil, loyalty, selflessness, forgiveness etc. Thus it was enjoyable in Book 4 to read the bit of whimsy about the oliphaunts. I can picture Sam with his hands clasped behind his back reciting his little poem.

I so agree with you, Janet! It's filled with good and evil, loyalty, selflessness and forgiveness.....so well said by you. I absolutely love this entire trilogy and will never tire of it!

I love the constantly interposed bits about fighting for an ideal life, thinking about those who are less fortunate and who have been exposed to far worse horrors, not judging those because you can't imagine who you would be in their place, etc. Beautiful themes throughout all the books.

Just finished this re-read tonight. What a difference a few years can make! I remember reading this in high school, and this book just slogged along for me and I even put it down for a couple of months somewhere in the middle. This time, I blazed right through it, loved every minute! I was surprised when I got to the end and am ready to jump right into the last installment. Such good stuff!

It is a beautiful, lofty book! I love how steadfast everyone is and the descriptions tug at my heart. You can feel the magic fading, the whispers of change!
