Greg Please read the rules below for nominating BEFORE you create your post!! And check our bookshelves to be sure you are not nominating something we have already read as a group within the past five years! Books that were read in the first years of the group are fine to repeat as we have many new members since then.

Only ONE nomination per person.

Please be sure to post the title and author.

Authors may not nominate their own books.

Please add your selection to this thread. Once there are a sufficient number of titles, we will vote via a poll. Each person may choose one title.

Remember, the authors should be gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender, or feature significant gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender characters in their work. Queer can be interpreted as broadly as we like.

Any genre (SF/fantasy, horror, romance, mystery), non-fiction, and classics are acceptable. Based on this criteria, we should have plenty of books to choose from. If you are nominating a title that is part of a series, please make sure to nominate the first book, unless we have already read it as a group.

The book discussions will start as soon as poll voting is done and continue through the end of May. This should give everyone sufficient time to obtain and read the books.

Benjamin Appleby-Dean (benjaminappleby-dean) I'd like to nominate Too Like the Lightning by Ada Palmer, a speculative novel set in a future where outward identification of gender is socially taboo - it's a brilliant book, and won her Best New Writer at the Hugos this year

Kevin Anthony Tuddao | 2 comments I'd like to nominate every novel written by Adam Silvera cause I feel like It's a really awesome read. heart breaking every one of them. But I guess I'd nominate Golden Boy by Abigail Tarttelin.

Kazza (kazzak) | 14 comments I'll nominate ¶Ù²¹±ôí by E.M. Hamill. Sci-fi. Third gender main character. Although set in the future, it resonates in contemporary times.

message 11: by Greg (new)

Greg Anyone can either nominate a book or second a book that has already been nominated. The eight books with the most number of seconds will go to the poll. Among books with the same number of seconds, choice of which book goes to the poll will be based on which nomination was received earliest.

message 12: by Shane (new)

Shane | 2 comments I’m thinking ‘My Cat Yugoslavia by Pajtim Statovci, sounds wonky in a good way.

message 13: by Greg (new)

Greg Lots of great nominations! Selfishly, I'm thrilled to see that many are available on Audible, which will be great with my commute. :)

Anyone want to second a book nominated? See rules in post #12 above for which books will go through to the poll.

message 18: by David (new)

David | 2 comments Uncle’s Story, by Witi Ihimaera, is the story of a young Maori gay man, who tries to uncover the truth about the uncle he never knew he had. The first book to ever prompt me to track down and write to the author to express my thanks.

message 19: by Mars (new)

Mars R (northofnow) | 1 comments Kay wrote: "Meanwhile, Elsewhere! It's a trans sci fi collection of short stories."

I second this recommendation! I've been really wanting to read this.

message 20: by Neil (new)

Neil Plakcy (neilplakcy) | 3 comments I'd like to nominate The Magpie Lord by KJ Charles. I love all her Victorian-set novels, but this one, the first of a trilogy, has some marvelous bits that I particularly adore.

Greg Joseph wrote: "I want to nominate Boys of Life by Paul Russel. I would also like to nominate a series or the first book in the series: Boystown by Marshall Thornton."

You can only nominate one book Joseph - a hard choice, but which do you choose? :)

message 26: by Joseph (new)

Joseph Longo (josephlongo) | 75 comments Life is full of hard choices. I nominate Boystown 1.

message 27: by Angb (new)

Angb | 1 comments I'm interested in Too Like... as well!

message 28: by Aida (new)

Aida (moonida98) | 9 comments I would like to nominate The Inexplicable Logic of My Life too. I really want to read that.

message 29: by Heydave (new)

Heydave | 2 comments I would nominate "Hide" by Matthew Griffin. A truly original book about a longterm, committed but secret gay relationship in a particular place (the south) and time (beginning in the late 1940s-early 1950s). At once beautiful, strange, heartbreaking and uplifting, it is a good reminder of just how far we've come. In these days of Trump and Sessions it would be wise for us all not to take anything for granted.

message 30: by Xan (new)

Xan | 3 comments I'd like to nominate Triad Blood by Nathan Burgoine. I've been wanting to read that for a while.

message 31: by Greg (last edited Oct 27, 2017 07:58AM) (new)

Greg Thanks everyone for the great suggestions!

Just a few rules reminders since we haven't done this in a while:
- You can second only one book or nominate only one book, not both.
- Don't forget: an author cannot nominate their own book.
- Also, books should be widely enough available that members don't have too much trouble getting hold of them.

The top 8 will go to the poll, sorted first by number of seconds and after that sorted by time they were nominated.

Here's the current nomination list:

1. Too Like the Lightning by Ada Palmer (3 seconds)
2. They Both Die at the End by Adam Silvera (3 seconds)
3. Days Without End by Sebastian Barry (2 seconds)
4. Jazz Moon by Joe Okonkwo (2 seconds)
5. Golden Boy by Abigail Tarttelin (2 seconds)
6. Meanwhile, Elsewhere: Science Fiction and Fantasy from Transgender Writers (2 seconds)
7. We the Animals by Justin Torres (1 second)
8. The Inexplicable Logic of My Life by Benjamin Alire Sáenz (1 second)
------------- <- current poll cutoff
My Cat Yugoslavia by Pajtim Statovci (1 second)
Uncle's Story by Witi Ihimaera (1 second)
The Magpie Lord by K.J. Charles (1 second)
The Giddy Death of the Gays & the Strange Demise of Straights by Redfern Jon Barrett
¶Ù²¹±ôí by E.M. Hamill
Three Nick Nowak Mysteries by Marshall Thornton
Hide by Matthew Griffin
Triad Blood by Nathan Burgoine
Close to the Knives: A Memoir of Disintegration by David Wojnarowicz
Ramona Blue by Julie Murphy
No One Can Pronounce My Name by Rakesh Satyal
The Missing Myth: A New Vision of Same-Sex Love by Gilles Herrada
The Puritan Pirate by Jules Radcliffe

I'm seconding Uncle's Story because a review I read of it here starts:
"There are no gay Maoris. If someone is born Maori and admits to being gay they are thrown out of their tribe, family and village and never mentioned again."
Sold. Always down for a story about someone who loses everything while (re?)gaining their authentic self. Freedom ain't free, to co-opt a phrase.

How fascinating David and Richard, I see this is the same author who wrote The Whale Rider. I'm very intrigued! If Uncle's Story doesn't win the poll, I'd be interested in a buddy read of it.

List updated again in message 31.

Thanks Raul! :)

How is the availability of these nominated books in your region? I did notice that 7 of the 8 above the line are available on Audible.com; so I assume they're quite widely available in the US. I'm curious what the availability is like in other regions though.

message 47: by Greg (last edited Oct 24, 2017 08:49AM) (new)

Greg I updated the list in message 31 and checked back to be sure I had the order correct. It goes first by number of seconds, and within the same number of seconds, it goes by the how early it was originally nominated.

The books being nominated look superb, and I love that many are new to me!

Brooklyn || The Wild Library (thewildlibrary) I'd like to nominate "They Both Die at the End" by Adam Silvera

I just did a quick check on the availability of the leading 8 books from Amazon UK. I know there are other suppliers but Amazon seems to be a good way of checking general availability. Meanwhile, Elsewhere: Science Fiction and Fantasy from Transgender Writers appears to be available only as an import and takes 2 to 5 weeks for delivery. Golden Boy is only available second hand from third party sellers. The other 6 are all available as hardbacks, paperbacks or kindle editions.

Greg Andrew wrote: "I just did a quick check on the availability of the leading 8 books from Amazon UK. I know there are other suppliers but Amazon seems."

Thanks so much Andrew for looking into this! It's good to know that a lot of these are available in your region - Queerreaders is a very international group, and I'm hoping members in different regions will be able to easily get at least one of the two final poll winners.
