I'm trying to remember the name of this book I read a few years ago.
Two brothers go with their elderly neighbor to her cabin in the woods after their mother doesn't come home for days.
It's told from the point of view of the older brother, who had been taken away by social services before the younger one was born because their mother, though loving, was neglectful. He was returned after she seemed to turn over a new leaf with her younger son.
I remember the elderly lady had some sort of convertible (it may have been red but I don't remember).
At one point in the book, the older brother recounts the time their run-down apartment was broken into, but they didn't take anything because nothing they owned was worth taking.
*SPOILER*
At the end of the story its revealed their mother didn't abandon them, but actually got into an accident and had been incapacitated in the hospital. The elderly neighbor knew but didn't say anything because she didn't want to stop spending time with the brothers. I think the neighbor got charged with kidnapping or something.
Any help would be greatly appreciated! This has been bugging me for a while.
