Featuring: catapulting romantic obstacles, including the disapproving family members, through the air.
Lady Catherine (totally unfazed) chastising through the air, "You'll never be good enough for my nephew!" *flies the other way* "Shades of Pemberly!" Hahaha, oh gosh, I'm cracking myself up again, envisioning her waggling her imperious finger, and the catapult sound effect as she whistles through the air.

You gave me both series....thank you!
Gifts, of course:
(view spoiler)
Ohk....now to business...let's do one series in the first half and one in the second half of the year, if that's cool with you?
So that we don't have a huge, long gap where we lose sight of each other amid all the threads...baby, its cold out there without yoooooo....???
Btw, I also got the whole of Captive Primce, in one shot, purely based on your reco . I'm a Good Munky like this...do as I'm told.
EDIT Can you see them Mel?["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>

I am both appreciative of and appalled by the selection of "gifts" you have bestowed upon me. I really do like the one with the roses. The sleepy purple hues and the glowing lights suggest something almost fae?
Thank you for the snowdrops as well, I looked up their meaning: rebirth and overcoming obstacles in life. Although that may have not been the intention, I'll take them as such. :)
As for the books...
Muahaha, I give them to you, and yet I still gain 2 buddy reads in return! Were that all transactions were so lucrative! *cackles*
*ahem* Yes, spacing them out works fine by me. But let's not set a specific date too soon, since I'm terrible at keeping to schedules at all, much less 10 months out.
I'm also so exciting that you got Captive Prince! *squee!* I must say that I wasn't so sure if it was for me starting out. There are... things... that I wasn't sure if I'd be okay with. But this is a trilogy in the traditional sense, with long arcs and payoffs. The writing is so intellegent with so many laaaayyers to unwrap, with each new level of meaning hitting you right in the feels. *kneads claws like a cat* Ungh, so good. I hope you like it half as much. Actually, now that would be an excellent series to buddy read, preferably with group of our resident essayists, because there's so much meat to chew on. :)

Bea posted on the Invites thread saying she wants to read Inda. We are still doing that this uear, right?
Will you please come to the Invites thread so we can choose a time that suits all of us and make it a HUGE HOUSE OF JHAGS read and hey Mel, your wish (for a big team read) came true!
? ???
I'm free anytime March onward...
@Bea I hope you see this too...

I mean, I was going to read it even as a buddy read of 2, but Bea has done the dirty work for us, and lured more to our side! Muahahaha! *casts arms upward in triumphant cackling*
(I'm actually wearing my Harry Potter bathrobe at the moment, with its peaked wizard hood pulled up ominously, which together with the hanging bell sleeves makes it perfect for evil cackling!)

Kotatsu lethargy has settled in as the rain beats against the window pane. Wrote first review in months. BRs down to a standstill. Hopefully things will pick up again in May.
Thinking about picking up The Secret Commonwealth next. Or perhaps indulge in some trashy Netflix rom-com. (Plan Coeur, I'm looking at you.)

I just binged all 9 seasons of an old show (The Office)...I really liked the short episodes...I dunno that I like anything supersoapy...i.e.mwhen dozens of episodes pass and nothing much happens besides more tangles...so I rarely have watched many superlong series from beginning to end...but this was funny and cute and tho it kinda watered down a bit the last two seasons it was still very watchable.
I am now kinda sick of Netflix...don't suppose that will last too long.......and one of these days I HAVE to progress on Game of Thromes. I stalled there on Season 2. Also, what happened to our plan (or was this still just a nebulous idea in my head??) to eventually watch The Witcher "together"?
EDIT I love your updated tracker....?
Also, more apologies for my horrible February...Jessica and I only now got going on the mafus

Hm, I ended up watching the first season of Plan Coeur, which was some light Frenchy fun. I never did watch GoT, never had the desire to, and after hearing about its horrible ending, feel glad I never bothered. I would be interested in The Witcher however - just maybe not yet. Since I'm reading The Secret Commonwealth now, I think the next TV series I want to tackle is His Dark Materials, to dive more into that world. Only 8 episodes, but should be fun. :)
Speaking of the The Secret Commonwealth: Aw man, I love it when a sequel to a series remains entirely faithful to the original! I'm loving returning to Lyra's Oxford and the world of daemons and alethiometers and intrigue!

Hey,, I know we deferred on WinterNight + Inda... but I'm still really in the mood for Red Rising + heard its breakneck pacy and bingeable. But I know you're really busy with moving, so no pressure, this is just a headsup to say I'm thinking of you ?? and sure haven't given up on our reading plans. Hope that we can work something out for RR soon. I'm happy for you to set the pace and timeline around your lifestuff but :)) remember I read slower than you. Perhaps you will be less busy in June? I have nothing except WarMreaker planned for June so we can binge the whole trilogy.
Yup... not in the mood for Witcher either right now, when I'm already reading so much fantasy. I think we were fortunate and somehow (cunningly) saved from how horribly GoT soured. I DO wanna start either Vikings or Outlander (can't decide) but right now.
Heh my cousins (dudes) and I just Netflixed (socially distanced Netflix Party addon to Chrome...it is a red button) a bunch of Jason Statham movies... blow sh!t up, drive fast cars, kick some goon b¨¹Tt and wear a one size fits all face.
What's not to like? :D
PS I will chk out the Secret Commonwealth

Yeah, I think there it an inverse correlation between serious real-life problems and wanting to read serious/deep books. My reading has been gearing towards fun/fluffy/comfort reads for a while now. Red Rising sounds like a fun and snappy series, perfect for uncertain times such as these. This summer then.
It depends on how quickly I go through Sullivan's Legends of the First Empire series. I know I won't be able to divide my attention between both series. I gave myself 2 weeks each, finishing in July, but if I blaze through them, then I might finish in June. Ah yes, but since you read slower, and I tend to binge, perhaps you could start first, and I could join in once I finish with Age of Empyre.
Haha, I do love a good popcorn action flick. I just they weren't so aggro-sexist, which turns me off. I love action-comedy though. Shooting things, dodging explosions, all while joking and quipping back and forth. I'm looking forward the next Guardians of the Galaxy movie coming out next year.
Mhmm... now I want popcorn.

Ok sure, so it's a deal... I shall start RR on June 1 (or would June 10-15 work better for you?) and you can show up a couple days later, working the three books around your Age of BRs.
Will you please request a single thread for the trilogy? I'm happy with either date. We can read all three books there and have a nice, luscious generously-sliced cake of a thread for anyone who comes later.
(view spoiler) ["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>

Alright, it's a date! I'll request a thread for June 7th, so you can slide in under that 1 week BR buffer, and I'll come in somewhere between my Age of- BRs.

EDIT I just finished Uprooted. I really enjoyed it but my love ain't blind in this case.
And I'm listening to this and WHOA....

Oof, just from the first lines of that blurb, I'm not sure if I could tackle that one you're listening to now. I have a hard time reading about abusive and unsafe families, especially in contemporary fiction. Fantasy gives a bit of distance, so it's not as traumatic. But uhm... I hope you... like it?

So I felt like this book needed 15o more pages or perhaps a full prequel novella to iron out the fabric and flesh some things out, then it would be a whole lot more okay. But I'm not abandoning Novik.
Haha you should deffo come to the thread regardless...I saw your review, you liked it. Right now, I am one leg in each boat. Let's see what Siobhan and Kari think. The last 1/3 really lifted it for me but the transitions to getting there (view spoiler)
Loved the Wood. We are allllll loving the Wood. Even more (view spoiler)

Too late. It shall be inscribed upon your tombstone.

Yeah, while I remember the major plot points, I forget many of the details that otherwise I might nitpick. As for her other books, I liked His Majesty's Dragon a lot, although I felt the series got repetitive and fell off along the way. But I'm still interested in her book Spinning Silver. I've heard good things, but even if it turns out to be lackluster, what better way to revel in disappointed hopes or fan the flames of outrage than with a buddy read?
...
I was tempted to erase that comment, but no I'm going to keep it because this shows what a disconnect my brain has sometimes. I look it up and DUH! The book about Miryem and the Ice King and the Fire Demon and OMG I loved that book! That was such a fun BR! How did I have such a disconnect between the experience, and the author/title? And like... I read it recently too! Apparently I can't remember a time before coronavirus.
Hm, it looks like she has a new book/series coming out in September though. A Deadly Education ... I'm game.

Oh ?? hehehe whatta way to go!! I love it....AND the funeral stories would keep the celebrants entertained...???
Ha, I've been on GR all day and had to charge my spavined ipad.
Now....where were we?
Plan to read Spinning Silver eventually but the one I can't wait for is RR in June.
A pacy dystopian seems like just what I will need as a change from all this epic fantasy...
But who knows tho what we will be feeling like in Spetember? Perhaps the world will have ended and be overrun by plantlife and zoo animals... and three thousand years later they will find weird things like Toyotas inside bushes... ssshhhh ?? (view spoiler)
Yeah ? kinda like when I forgot and read a stupid early Carlos Ruiz Zafon book that I really disliked and found not much merit in (creepy clown, hate them!) a second time....ugg and bcuz of my horrible memory (poooof!!!) I didn't even realise that I already read this umtil I was 60-70% thru...... it happens, it happens......
EDIT
(view spoiler)

Yes, I do enjoy myself a good bit of sci-fi, and tend to bounce back and forth between the two genres. If it weren't for Network Effect, I'd be tempted to pick up RR right away before starting in on Sullivan. But I can't help myself; I need more Murderbot. :)
I have this book, The World Without Us which goes into how the world
and... what's this about John Lennon and wine?
*sigh* I suppose it wouldn't be a properly Zaaralicious comment if I wasn't completely confused at some point by something. :P Love you too.

Sorry to have confunded you Mel... we were just talking abt worldwide doomsday times and I was (right then) listening to the Beatles and think I read/heard somewhere (totally blanking now on how I got there) how all the booze stores were sold out on the days following the shooting..... so I just literally typed what I was thinking right then.
But really...*snort* we are examining the rationale of why I say sh!t now? I thought I could just invoke some Act of God catastrophe clause in my contract...
*kicks self*
Truly I am not so profound...?
Ok sure...so I have Red Rising (3 books left) + Grey Sister (2 left) + Dark Crowns (3 novellas + 2 novels) + Warbreaker (1)...so that's my June all set then!
+ unless Chris should wanna continue with our Abercrombie a month buddy read, in which case one more.

Honestly, I'm starting to worry whether I mightn't be getting in over my head with LotFE. Even though I do love binging series, I haven't had the best of track records sticking with them here in FBR, unable to stick to a schedule. But I requested this one, so I'll try my best! Plus I've enjoyed Sullivan's other works, so I have high hopes for the series.

I'm not doing Legends right now since I'm fast approaching fantasy burnout but you can be sure I will haunt the threads and check all your beautifully written posts, eventually.
Also, don't worry/pressure about tandem posting on RR, I"ll wait for replies until you have the time to get to the thread + I'm slow so there's some pressure offa you already.
See u in June!
EDIT Don't worry. You can do it, Mel...i checked the schedule. Its a book every two weeks, right? You can read one Sullivan per week, EASY. Hope there's a bit more clarity on your living situation now.

Haha, I love the idea of haunting all these long dead threads and commenting on them anyway! Literally have no care for how old they are, but find the Hidden Gems of BRs Past and shower them with fresh appreciation. :)
And yes, I'll see you in June with RR!

I'll finish a couple short stories with Hay and see you soon. Meanwhile, I hope you're enjoying Sullivan.

Mmm, I realized that I've been having a really good run of books lately, and then realized - well duh! My May slate of Martha Wells, Michael J. Sullivan, and KJ Charles, are all familiar, consistently awesome, favorite authors. I know I like their writing. I obviously need to (re)read more of the authors I love. Some series I'm waiting to be fully published, but for others - what am I waiting for?
Also, at some point we need to arrange another Feel Good BR. Reading together with you, Sha, Jessica, and Hailee were some of the best times I've had here. I still crack myself up envisioning a catapulting Dowager Duchess of Claremont or a Lady Catherine de Bourgh - "Shades of Pemberly!"

Btw, I always meant to hit you up on this...
Hailee and I are gonna re(to the n zillionth power)read P&P sllllllllowly thru June 1...I will be listening to the Ehle readalong I linked on Random Chat, one part at a time...it's ALL going down on Hailee's tracker...since it's her favourite book of all time.
I wish I could say you have the option to politely turn this down but you asked for a feel good read and so...? now you actually HAVE to come and read with us at our snail-y pay in instalents pace...since you self coerced...no isn't even on the table anymore...

Oh no. Woe is me. Not Pride and Prejudice. Anything but that...
*resigned sigh*
Ah well... if I must I must. 'Tis a noble sacrifice on my part, but I shall gird my loins and endeavor to accept my fate with equanimity. *solumn resolve* (????`)?
Actually, I may even try to do the Jennifer Ehle version with you. I gave it a peek before when you shared it, but didn't dig in. I think I may have mentioned that I don't really do audiobooks. However, it is true that I enjoy reading aloud with friends. So, I think that perhaps the fact that I'd be watching a video, plus the fact that I've read P&P multiple times and am already familiar with it, combined with a slow reading pace... it may just work. We'll see. I may have to resort to my eyeballs in the end, but I'm going to try to give it a go. Audio Challenge!

Actually I haven't read it for some years now + Hailee was due for a
reread soon....I'm quite in the mood.
I know you're not an audiobooker, but the sections are short and the book familiar so if you can complete a 20 min Youtube video you're home and in the jam.

I meant to show love/appreciation for all that you did + since you indicated that you wanted to do a feel good read + enjoyed the Ehle links... see... I SWEAARR I thought I was just encouraging/inclusive of you in the direction of something that you wanted anyway. As you can see (message above) I really tried to tell you that.
See...sometimes when ppl say things to me I take it literally/immediately...? instead of just as something they indicatively wanted to do *waves at the mid horizon* at some vague undefined point in the future. Bcuz I swear sometimes I am Sheldon Xooper in not knowing some of this 'people' stuff + I was just... greedy to do more things with you, I guess.
Didn't want to make you feel bad or ever do anything you weren't up for. I know it can't be easy given everything that's gone on before + how much effort you take to contribute to BRs. And hey. Did your living situation get sorted out? How'd you manage with the whole job/apartment thing? I think u told me you were gonna bunk with a friend...right?
Hope you you see this soon!

If this were a romantic comedy, this is the point where I would take you in my arms and say, "Shut up, and kiss me you fool!"
You didn't force me into anything, and to hear you've been greedy to do more things together is highly flattering and endearing. Believe me, likewise. *squishes your face* Why else would I (be attempting to) hop on to all these BRs with you? I'm just as eager, I've just had an unfortunate case of (over)booking myself full right when all this George Floyd shit hit the fan, and so my focus has been torn up.
Keep in mind that I don't do as many BRs as you do, so falling behind is something that just... happens... sometimes. Be assured it's not a reflection of my interest in the books or spending time with you. <3 <3 <3
Haven't given up, just taking a breather. Be back on track soon.
On the housing front, I was staying with a friend back in April, but for the past month or so have been lucky to rent a room from my local church for a low cost. Alas, the job hasn't materialized, but at least I'm not destitute, and have some savings. Yesterday I took a lovely break to go down to the beach with the guy I've been seeing. Went swimming and picnicked and even read a bit. It was pretty empty except for a couple surfers, and it was a welcome respite from the rest of the world. Any recent adventures or novelties on your end?

Edit: I realized this is my 1000th post!
¤ª¤á¤Ç¤È¤¦£¡ to me!¡¡\( ??£þ)/
¡î?*:*?.: ?(????) :*:???(???)? :*:???(????)? .?.:*?©b??*¡î

I've been ok, Mel.
But hey. Sounds like you had a very nice day on the beach...??and it's good too that your living situation is sorted for now.

I'm definitely feeling the New Year's Energy, wanting to plan ALL THE BUDDY READS! And at the same time trying to remember that I need to keep it to 3 or 4 max per month, or else I'm just inviting burnout. I always seem to hit a slump in March. We'll see if I can avoid that this year.

Has there ever been a full Inda readthru after one Scott, Veronica et al completed in 2018? You wanna do that next year?
EDIT I've only wanted to get to it since forever....
2nd EDIT We've only been talking about getting to it since forever...
god!
3rd EDIT Don;t worry, we still have Red Rising...

I'm totally not in the mood for it right now but I would love to read Vanity Fair with you...someday...

While I don't like to overbook myself and may only do a couple planned BRs a month, I'm much more likely to pick up a spontaneous read. Last minute BRs are like a betsubara dessert-stomach sort of situation.
"I'm so stuffed I couldn't possibly- Oh, a standalone this weekend? Well, maybe just one..."

Looking forward to many a „e¸¹ dessert read together in the coming year!
