I am shook.
I'm happy to see Spook realize that he was being mislead. He did the right thing pulling the metal from his body (yay I was right about it being a hemalurgy spike! Not that it was hard to notice) as well as from Quellion. Spook is honestly such a hero, running into the fire, extinguishing his tin, in order to pull the lever that will flood the canals again and save the city and its people. It seems that this will end in a sacrifice though, just like Kelsier :( It makes me so sad, because Spook has become my favorite character. He did the right thing though.

The battle on the stage was intense. I was expecting Beldre to be an Allowmancer, however I was thinking that maybe she was a soother and was slightly manipulating Spook to talk about his past and become more comfortable. But no, she was a coinshot all along!

And Ruin, that bastard! I'm glad Spook saw through it, and realized this was not Kelsier speaking to him.

Alright, I'm going to rewind a bit and talk about things earlier in this part.

- First off, I was surprised that Elend never corrected his soldiers after the one punched General Demoux. I was even more surprised when Elend said he would have to execute that soldier. It just didn't seem like him. Why not correct his soldiers first, and tell them that these "mistfallen" are not in ill-favor of the Survivor. If they continued, then think about punishments.

- The scene with Elend killing the Koloss and saving the village was really awesome. I think he's worried his bloodlust makes him similar to The Lord Ruler, but really he is just seeking vengeance and justice. He is a good man.

- Later, when Elend is walking through the ash, he drops to his knees and the ash goes up to his chest. This really put into perspective for me how thick the ash fall has gotten. With that amount of ash, who knows what you're stepping on, there could be a fallen sword or something underneath that could slash your foot open.
- Anyway, so the mist spirit seems to be pointing back to Luthadel. Maybe this is where Ruins body is hidden? And something has to be done about Penrod.
- it was amazing to see the mist spirit return and try to communicate with Elend.

"I will kill you, the words said. Death, death, death."
XD I love how Elend replies, "Well... that was pleasant."
Of course this was Ruin corrupting what it was writing though.
And later, when Elend says "Either it's changing things, or you just don't know your letters." Hahaha Elend is the best.

- WOAAH so the italic passage for chapter 56 mentions a short man with black hair and a prominent nose falling from the sky, being left in the ash. The passage says, "It's gods had to die with it" alluding to this man who fell from the sky being a god. Was this the human form of preservation dying, after using the last of his will to appear as the mist spirit to Elend? I find it interesting how it wasn't described as having any divine form, it was described as having a fairly imperfect figure. However, from what is mentioned later on by Ruin, I don't think Preservation is fully dead, but just his body. I believe his power is still causing some restraint against Ruin.

- This leads me to discussing Vin's situation. Dang, so her brother isn't alive, it was just Ruin the whole time. She saw through it pretty well though, her paranoia was on point! Hmmm I wonder if she can work with Ruin's pride to manipulate him? Maybe by pretending like she gave up hope and will just succumb to his destruction? Vin's a smart gal, she'll figure something out. I think her and Elend just need to forget about the siege and make their way back to Luthadel. I don't care if she kills this Yomen fellow or not, but she needs to escape him.
spook

- I like how these italic passages are giving us much more information then in previous books. In this part we learn much more about the pact between Preservation and Ruin, and how Preservation used most of its power to trap Ruin. And yes, like Dimitris mentioned in a previous discussion, I believe the one writing these passages much be Sazed! This makes me so excited, as it implies that he eventually gets back to doing his research and sharing knowledge!

- Now I also can't forget to mention TenSoon! I never knew he had to torture OreSeur to learn about the character he had to play... :( I believe TenSoon took OreSeurs body while he was imitating Lord Renoux, so the majority of the kandra we know and love has been TenSoon. Though I still like OreSeurs name better ;)
- It was almost chilling to read about the kandra digging up Kelsier's bones and imitating him again. And he's bringing the bones with him, so I'm assuming he will use them again. BUT YAY, TENSOON IS GOING TO FIND VIN AND ELEND!!!

- Now it's been pretty quite with Marsh this time around, so I'm thinking something big is going to happen involving him in Part Five. Well honestly, just something big will happen in general. I hope Spook will survive.... but it doesn't really look like it :(

Let me know what you thought of this part!! ^_^

Dimitris (dimitris_lianos) I thought this part was the greatest one in all of the Trilogy. Even better than the upcoming Finale. It was pure pleasure reading it, even now that I read it again after 20 days in order to refresh my memory.

Jay must be more experienced than I am in Fantasy (of course he is) cause I never saw it coming, neither about the hemalurgy spike in Spook's body, nor about Reen and Kelsier not being "real" but only Ruin's creations! This was very sad, I needed more Kelsier - but there's more mr. Sanderson wrote about him in some Unbounded collection if I remember a comment under one of Jay's videos. I must read this! (thick, almost 700 pages, very expensive too but worth it - this story with Kelsier must be the one titled ''The Eleventh Metal''!)

This Ruin entity is really revolting! It doesn't play fair. But thank God our protagonists have grown smart and see through its tricks. It's the only thing that gives me hope cause otherwise all seems lost...

That scene in which Elend knelt to the ash-covered soil, all alone, giving up, was the most heart-breaking thing I ever read!... If the Mist Spirit hadn't appeared there and then, I do believe I would have choked... :( To me it's clear the Mist Spirit was Preservation, dying... It was a frightful yet poignant and meaningful allegory as to how even gods die... It had grown thin, weak, almost transparent, couldn't communicate with Elend... so sad! It was there trying to help them all along but was so misunderstood and feared. I don't know if all this was intentional on the author's side but these fantasy situations hit a very sensitive chord in me. Like the God I believe in is slowly thinning and dying as our world is moving away in a different fatal direction... All this indifference expressed by Ruin "Don't fight the End, it's natural, I'm in reality the good one, embrace the End of everything" really creeped me out! No, we will always fight you! (OK, I'll get a grip now.)

Indeed the part where Ore'seur dug up Kelsier's bones up and inhabited him momentarily again was superb! This part was so uplifting to read! A real god just died, a dead man-turned god was resurrected. In all worlds, people need to see in order to believe, a sad realization. Our Kandra may have just saved thousands by urging them to move to the Pits. Still, it made a very bad impresion on me as well that he tortured the real Ore'seur to death in order to get every last info. Kandra torturing Kandra?...

It was mentioned somewhere, I can't remember where exactly, but I too believe that the Kandra never should have accepted this contract to aid the band kill their Father. This entire contract thing hasn't convinced me at all... With what did Kelsier's starving outlaw group pay the Kandra counsil for them to send one of their oldest and best members to serve this band trick and exterminate the Lord Ruler? What could the Kandra even need? And how would one go about hiring them? No one knows where they live, who they are, what they look like...
The counsil's first move should have been to warn their Father: "Listen up, dad, there's this Skaa guy who escaped your Pits here, he's conspiring to end you, he asked one of us to impersonate a certain Lord Renoux in a small southern town near your capital, in order for another girl Skaa trash to play his supposed niece and gain access to the Luthandel Aristocracy and get near you. Just send our dark cousins, you know who *wink-wink* to deal with him, alright? Kisses, over and out"...

Ok, I'm not suggesting that there's a hole in the story-line but it's strange. Tensoon says all the time how he was against Kelsier's plan and felt really treacherous to be a part in it and how he hated Vin for a really long time... yet he helped her - the woman who had killed his race's Creator. Where were his morals then? The same morals that drove him back to the Fatherland to be willfully put to mortal trial for breaking Zayn Zane's trust under the contract?... Ohhh...

Let's finish this! Final lap!

My bad on the late reply!

It was certainly a very enjoyable part of the book! I was also sad that Reen and Kelsier weren't real :( I was glad though to finally be able to put together that odd passage in book two where it mentioned Zane having some type of metal spike in his shoulder. I remember you mentioning that in a book 2 discussion, and now we finally know why!
Ahh yes I want to pick up the Unbound collection as well, especially after discovering there's a story about Kelsier in there.
I was really happy Vin saw through Ruin's tricks. I was actually questioning, maybe she was wrong? Maybe this really is Reen she's talking to? But I'm glad Vin's stubbornness was an asset this time.
It was a VERY powerful scene, when Elend was kneeling in the mist, as the mist spirit made its final appearance before fading out.
Yes I completely agree with your questions about the kandra contract, how could a kandra accept a contract by a group meant to overthrow the Lord Ruler? I don't get it either, and I'd like to know what they get out of the contract.

"Listen up, dad, there's this Skaa guy who escaped your Pits here, he's conspiring to end you, he asked one of us to impersonate a certain Lord Renoux in a small southern town near your capital, in order for another girl Skaa trash to play his supposed niece and gain access to the Luthandel Aristocracy and get near you. LOL!! This is great XD but yeah you think they would warn the Lord Ruler! Hmmm you might've found a bit of a plot hole ;)
