Earlier this month I finished reading Spireseeker, an indie fantasy novel that I wanted to recommend here.
Here's my review of it, to help you decide if this indie fantasy book is something you'd like to read:
The worldbuilding in Spireseeker is great, and it features a cast of characters with such diversity in personality that there is someone for every reader to love. (My favorite characters were Tann and Jura.) The writing is solid; the book was easy to read. I also loved the little artistic touches, like the small illustrations at the start of each chapter and the gorgeous map at the beginning. The book is very aesthetically pleasing and professional. You wouldn't know it came from an indie publishing company (Atthis Arts).
This is very much a "journey" book; we spend a lot of time traveling with the characters, which allows us to see their relationships develop, and their reflections on themselves as they learn from their mistakes. Beryl is idealistic, which is balanced nicely by her tough friend Kick. The novel has themes of faith, hope, and friendship, which I think will appeal to many readers.
In terms of reader audience, I think this book is appropriate for ages 10 and up. (The only adult content is the threat of rape, but it was alluded to rather than directly addressed so it would probably go over young readers' heads.) In fact, I would definitely recommend Spireseeker to young readers who love fantasy. I usually try to recommend books based on other books people enjoy, and I think Spireseeker would appeal to readers who enjoy the Chronicles of Narnia series. (Spireseeker is very different in terms of creative content, but I could see readership of the two overlapping.)
