Awesome, thanks Alondra! If I am good this year and clean up my TBR maybe I'll check it out :D

Pascal, after some heavy reading, some time in Middle Earth sounds great to me!

Rob, Frankenstein feels like one of those books that I'm glad to have read, but also not something I'd gladly read twice.

I fully agree, I couldn't even finish it . Then again I tend to read for entertainment not for education ( I read enough science and computer mags for that). Nor do I really want to discuss what horrible things humans can and have done.

Bury my head in the sand ???? Probably . My son gests disgusted by this attitude.

I hear you on that one. If you figure out how to clean up your TBR, please let me know! ....asking for a friend.... o_O

Don Dunham Any suggestions for a good "dark horse" Science fiction novel. The Harder the better. I think I've picked over most of the low hanging nuggets...

Tell him it isn't burying your head in the sand when you read fiction for entertainment, it is when you ignore the reality around you. No matter what else it is, The Handmaid's Tale is still just fiction. Thank that Stars and Baba Yaga. LOL.

I need a long vacation on a dessert island to make any kind of a dent in my TBR.

message 212: by Karen (new)

Karen (librarykatz) | 262 comments Just finished The Long Mars, getting more into The Rise and Fall of D.O.D.O., and looking at starting Into the Water. Oh, and am listening to Marrying Harriet, some regency fluff as I putter around the house.

The Long Mars took 1/2 of the book to really get interesting; I was considering dropping the whole series but now I can’t!

Jen (jenthebest) | 515 comments I've been reading Reaper's Gale (Malazan #7) for close to a month now, and I may shelve all of my other reading until I finish the main 10 books of the series. If I take a month per book, I should finish in April.

This sounds like a great vacation. We should make a "resort for readers" where you can save up and take a year with limited social media (GR, of course!), vast "Beauty and the Beast" style libraries (maybe minus a curse or two), and of course just oodles of ebooks.

Michael, those are such good books! Are you liking them?

Karen, I love a good pay off!

Jen, I'm watching how you tackle the series. I'm planning on trying it next year and was thinking one a month with one shorter book in between, but now I'm nervous that may be over optimistic.

The first 6 books I read in about 3 weeks each. This one is taking longer - I think a combination of being a longer book & life/work getting in the way. They are so phenomenal though, even though I have thousands of pages and months of reading to go, I am sad its coming to a close. :)

So far I’m enjoying it. The writing style makes it one of those reads you could just curl up with and lose yourself for a good afternoon or three. Thank goodness for winter weather and staying indoors!

message 218: by Rob (new)

Rob (robzak) | 876 comments I read Malazan over the course of like a year and a half with a group here on Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ. We had a really good core do all 10 books and have a ton of comments on each chapter, including spoiler comments for re-reads.

One of these years I'm going to reread the series and go through all those spoilers as I go.

message 219: by Chris (new)

Chris | 1120 comments Rob, the Malazan group is a great idea. Thanks for bringing it to our attention! I plan to continue that series someday, so I will have to look up the group again at that time.

If you want to bookmark it for later it's here: /group/show/...

We created 1 section per book, and 1 thread per chapter. I was a first time reader when we did it, so I made sure the rereaders kept all their comments to spoiler tags.

message 223: by MadProfessah (new)

MadProfessah (madprofesssah) | 775 comments Enjoy WORLD OF TROUBLE! I think the third book is probably the best in the Last Policeman trilogy.

message 224: by Aaron (new)

Aaron Nagy | 510 comments Been reading alot of trashy KU novels lately along with some webfiction. The only standout one to me is Perilous Waif which was an above average Mary Sue running around dunking everyone novel, with actually good world building. Ohh yeah and the twist was that Mary Sue is the last princess of the Space Nazi's. Which is setting a high bar for the year already for uhhhh "wild" plot ideas.

Also a bunch of DNFs on KU at like the 50% mark.

And started reading Transcendent it's okay so far but weaker than the last.

But really my time is being gobbled by a bunch of games I bought on during the winter sales and Visual Novels (which are kinda just books you click through I guess)

Don wrote: "Kathy I think you've just come up against the fact that the first 3 Mist born books were amazing a the other Sanderson stuff is far less amazing."

I like the second Mistborn series better than the first, and you arn't going to convince me otherwise.

But I got burned out a bit on Stormlight the first time, even though I made it through. If you have more money than time I do recommend the graphic audio production as it really kept me sucked into the story and improved the experience dramatically. On my second try in preparation for Oathbringer...I'm still waiting for their version of Oathbringer before continuing, which may lead to me over estimating the books quality.

message 225: by Don (new)

Don Dunham says: "Aaron you got me twisted amigo! I never try convincing folks because convincing folks only works enough to convince me that one cannot convince people".
You turned me on to "Poor man's fight" series, so you are golden. that was certainly an action packed Lazer filled fun ride.

message 228: by Silvana (new)

Silvana (silvaubrey) | 2766 comments Finished with World of Trouble. Madprof is correct, it is the best of The Last Policeman trilogy. Seriously you guys, read this one till the end! Heartfelt, very well constructed world before the doom (not after, because we already have too many of those), realistic portrayal of how a society could collapse, and also fantastic detective work in between. Probably the only trilogy which quality increases in every book.

Onwards to Raven Stratagem.

Meredith | 1762 comments I recently started A Long Fatal Love Chase by Louisa May Alcott. Super gothic. Not my usual style of book, but an interesting read nonetheless.

Also, Ghost Talkers. Mary Robinette Kowal is a favorite author of mine and so far this book does not disappoint, getting off to a quick start with good world-building in this alternate history where spiritual mediums are real and help with the WWI effort.

message 239: by Jacqueline (new)

Jacqueline | 2428 comments So I started and finished the 2nd Artemis Fowl book (which I enjoyed) and then for some reason started The Sun and Her Flowers by Rapi Kaur. Barrelled through it last night. It's mostly only one liners and short observations and a hell of a lot of blank space. Didn't like it. It's supposed to be poetry. I like mine to rhyme. TS Eliot, Banjo Patterson, Dorothea Mackellar, Dr Seuss.... Yeahhhhh anyhoo....

Trike Change Agent has some terrifyingly possible extrapolation about the coming wave of biological editing, undercut by a formulaic story.

Binti was disappointing due to its unconvincing characters and poor storytelling. I don’t know why this won so many awards.

Yes!! It was a club read. We had a buddy read for Seven Surrenders. You can still find it (with spoiler tags) if you want to join in. I'm told the third one was pretty great as well, but I'm waiting for the full series before I continue.

Agreed. I read the first 2 Binti stories and found them lacking. As much as I wanted to be on the Okorafor bandwagon, I've sadly determined her work is just not for me.

message 249: by Beth (new)

Beth (rosewoodpip) | 1991 comments I finished Mistborn: The Final Empire, my first book of the year aside from manga/graphic novels. It fits into both the "Buried Alive!" and "TBR Cleanup" challenges, and would also fit into "Read All the Books" although I'm not pursuing that one.

A book with great action scenes, that unfortunately otherwise didn't do a lot for me. My conflicted review is here.

I started reading Ursula le Guin's Lavinia after that, and not two hours later heard that she had passed away. :( :( It's lovely so far, and I regret that it's suddenly become a memorial read. (I did one for Pratchett, too.)
