There is a bug in group search that, for some books, even though the book has been shelved it is not showing up as "grayed out." I have posted about this in the Feedback Group so hopefully it will get fixed.

In the meantime, since this bug results in duplicate shelvings, I have been using the "check duplicates" button to see if any duplicates have been created. Unfortunately if a dupe has been created, it's not the easiest thing in the world to remove it given that we have nearly 6,000 books shelved.

If you find that you've shelved a duplicate unintentionally and don't know how to remove it, post here and I'll remove it.

Cheryl (cherylllr) Thank you!

I'm currently going through 6 months of threads in which you asked 'OP, are you still looking for this book?' Unfortunately most of them have no response and are simply getting moved to Abandoned. However, if I see a Solved one and choose to try to add the book to the shelves I will check for duplicates first.

Thank you, Lobstergirl. I have probably double-shelved books. I have removed a book at least twice when I realized another edition already existed. I will be more diligent about the "check duplicates" button.

Sigh. Here is an example of a book which HAS been shelved, but is not showing as grayed out so people are adding duplicates:

Invincible

I deleted the duplicate.

I posted YET AGAIN in Feedback Group asking for this bug to be fixed. Four comments I've left asking for it to be fixed and staff has yet to reply.

The thread is here in case you'd like to voice your support for getting this bug fixed.

This bug is appearing again. Kris, I just moved two of your new shelvings over to pre-existing shelvings. I really don't know what to do about it. If an already-shelved book is showing as black rather than grayed-out, it's going to get shelved because there's no way to know it's already been shelved without looking for it manually, which is not feasible given how many books we've shelved.

So this is more of an FYI than anything. It's very frustrating.

Mods, please keep your eyes open for this. I just got rid of two duplicates.

Is there any indication that it has been shelved that I'm not seeing?

The [s] or /s at the end of a header means it has been shelved. Also if you do a book search and the title is grayed out, that means it's already been shelved.

I've found a few books that have the [s] or (rarely) /s that don't show up in the book database. I think there are some posters who think that the [s] at the end means solved, and the book hasn't actually been shelved. I'll check the shelves before I shelve a new solved book.

Thanks!

Maybe we should restrict shelving to Mods?

Although that wouldn't solve the problem of people who are adding a [s] thinking it means Solved. There's no way of really knowing who added what to a header, the OP or a Mod, since there's no edit log.

I do try to look at every book in the solved folders. I'm not exactly current, but eventually I do check. This may be why I have had several books shelved as duplicates, if the book doesn't show as shaded (previously shelved).

I wish there was an easy way to access the details page for duplicates so that we could paste threads that aren't included in the book we're "keeping" on the shelved list. Perhaps I'm missing an easy method?

FYI, this bug seems to be back.

Kris, I deleted your shelving of Harlequin and the Gift of Many Colours because I had already shelved it (actually it was already on the shelves, I added the thread URL).

I caught another one yesterday.

I can't complain about this in the Feedback Group because I've been banned. If someone else wants to start a thread over there, please go ahead.

Thanks, I just shelved that book and was about to check for duplicates. Duplicates weren't showing up for a few months (or rarely it seemed). But I noticed this problem recently, so I've re-started making periodic checks. It would be good if the other mods did this as well.

I think the older occurrence of the book in the Group Bookshelf should be deleted, with its contents copied to the new entry. For example, if you enter Harlequin and The Gift of Many Colors in the search box again, it will still not appear to be in the Bookshelf. The older occurrence is "hidden".

I just looked for it and it did appear, grayed out.

However yesterday when it happened with a different book, it did not show up on the shelf (i.e. grayed out) when I searched.

This is the thread I started in Feedback Group.

Or, anyone could start his or her own.

Ah, that's not a good example. There are two book entries for "Harlequin...colors" vs. "Harlequin...colours".
