I've had this book on my shelf for over a decade, and every time I've started to read it, the purple prose wears me out before I can finish.

This is the perfect opportunity to make myself power through it!

Jamie Zaccaria I read this one in High School. I think having to dissect it made me like it less than I would have otherwise. It is a brilliant and well-written story and deserves all the accolades it gets. Bravo Mary Shelley!

Sheneve Butler | 12 comments I read this in highschool as well. It was probably one of a handful of books that I still enjoyed even after it was dissected in Lit class.

Arawelo | 4 comments Same, remember associating it with the movie for the longest time and wouldn't have gone out of my way to pick it up if it wasn't for school. I was made to read an excerpt in class and was so taken with the prose that I went out and got a copy from the library the next day haha

The If I cannot satisfy the one, I will indulge the other. quote is honestly my favourite, I'd get it tattooed if i was into tattoos at all

So the wiki tells me there are 2 versions of Frankenstein, an original one and one revised by Mary Shelley. Which one did you /will you read??

message 6: by Katie (new)

Katie (littlelistmaker) Consulted with my boyfriend who teaches 19th century lit and has taught Frankenstein a bunch -- he recommends the original version. The revision was done by Percy Shelley who always dimmed Mary's shine imo. He says the versions currently in publication by Oxford and Penguin are the original by Mary if anyone plans to pick up a new copy.

Ooo, thank you Katie!!

message 8: by Dainey (new)

Dainey | 69 comments Hmm, mine's the Wordsworth classics one, and I fave a feeling it's the version with Percy's "improvements". Maybe I'll find the original one and do a comparison one day!

Kristen Ashley | 25 comments I can't believe Mary was 19 when she wrote this. I read it in college and you guys are in for one hell of a ride. Enjoy!

Kim | 65 comments Is anyone reading that new version for this challenge the 1818 text or the annotated version from her original manuscript?
