մě Kundela | 16 comments Hi there, I'm looking for some YA books where the MC goes to a school that seems normal on the outside, but is actually a school for not so normal things. That can be everything from magic, fighting, vampire schools or even things like spying and assassionations. It would be good if the MC didn't know beforehand what kind of school it was(maybe the school recruted them themselves, maybe they just got there by accident.) I'm mainly looking for fantasy books(as I said, magic, preternatural species, etc.) but in some cases it can be set in "real life". I'm also not looking for something old, my ideal range is from 2000 and up. Thanks a lot in advance and I'll be waiting for your suggestions :)
P.S. I've read Harry Potter, no need to point that book out :D

Among the Hidden is the first book and it doesn't have this theme but he is sent to a school in the second book and it matches your "real life" parameters perfectly.

Kaion (kaionvin) | 388 comments Witch Week, and probably some other books of Diana Wynne Jones's Chrestomanci series. Also, Year of the Griffin.

Deadly Class #1 is about an assassin school, though the focus is more on the teenage angst/melodrama.

On a lighter note, SuperMutant Magic Academy, which plays on the tropes of supernatural schools ala Hogwarts and Professor Xavier's School of Gifted Youngsters.

For that matter-- quite a few X-Men titles (Wolverine and the X-Men, Volume 1, Astonishing X-Men: Omnibus, etc)

I see someone has recommended Half-Blood from the Covenant series by Jennifer L Armentrout and Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead both are amazing and 2 of my faves though they are aware of what kind of school it is at start same as Hex Hall another good rec. I suggest

Touch of Frost the first book in the Mythos Academy series Jennifer Estep

Dead Beautiful by Yvonne Woon

Born at Midnight first in the Shadow falls series by C.C. Hunter is a Summer camp not a school but she thinks its a camp for bad kids but its for paranormal teens

In today's Bargain Booksy email list is Fear University Series: Books 1-3 + Novella this has the first 3 books in the series plus a novella. No idea if it's any good or not, but thought I'd toss it into the ring.

Falcon Quinn and the Black Mirror is another trilogy. I haven't read this one, but it's been searched for multiple times, the latest time the book/s were searched for and found was today. The school is for "monsters" and there is (of course) a competing school for "heroes".
