Nikki ~ The Nocturnal Bookworm (nyxreadsstuff) Welcome to rules and explanation for the Genre Exploration Team Challenge! In this challenge group members who sign up will get put into teams for a bit of friendly competition, and be challenged to read as many books as they can in the genre of the month.

Challenge ends November 30th 2018

Sign Ups are open and ongoing with new teams being made at the end of every month
Currently new players are being recruited for the existing two teams

How this Challenge Will Work

Each month teams will be challenged to read books that fall into the genre or theme of the month AND spell out the following with either the author first or last name, title, series title, or a main character’s name:

1. What the Genre is that month
2. The names of the authors of our books of the month
3. The titles of the books of the month

This will operate on a point system where teams get 25 points for each book read for a letter and a bonus 100 points each time they finish filling in one of the parts of those categories. This will mean that each month has a base 500 points up for grabs (genre, each authors name, and each title each count for a bonus 100 points when completed) with a variable amount of points each month based on length of names/titles/genre.

Each team will have a team captain that will be in charge of keeping up with the total. They will be asked to report these totals at the end of each month and I will keep a leaderboard in this post.

Please post the following sign up form in this thread

Sign Up Form

Name:
On average how many books do you read per month:
Top 3 favorite genres (I’m going to try and spread out interest among teams):
Are you willing to be team captain?

Each team will have it's own thread. After the teams are made they can decide on what they would like there team name to be. When I make the team threads they will start off as just team 1, 2, 3 ect. until I'm given a team name and then I will change it.

Nikki ~ The Nocturnal Bookworm (nyxreadsstuff) ~ FAQ ~

Can the books of the month be used to fill in a letter?

Yes, groups can consider those an easy two books to fulfill some of the challenge. You may choose to not use them if you wish but groups are completely allowed to use them.

Can books be used more than once?

Yes, as long as it is a different team member that reads it each time it is used.

Can the same author or series name be used more than once?

As long as it came from a separate book each time it was used that is fine.

Do books have to be of the genre of the month to count?

Yes, all the books used for any month have to be what the genre is that month, as part of the challenge is to explore the genre of the month. Any sub type or sub genre is fine too, it doesn't necessarily have to have it listed as the main page genre. For ideas and inspiration you can always check out the genre pages on Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ.

Is there any kind of bonus to using a book of the month?

Yes! The books of the month can each count for two letters for each instead of just one. To further clarify that means if you were to read both of them that would take care of four letters right there

If a book has more than one author, how do we know which we can use?

You can use any of the listed authors for a book. So for example if its a collection of short stories I am fine with you using any of the authors that contributed. You do have to read the whole book though.

If you have any questions about this team challenge feel free to post them in this thread :)

Jenny | 158 comments Sign me up.

Jenny

Usually read ~15 per month

Favorite genres are Scifi, weird fiction, and suspense. (Hard to choose- I also like mystery, science books, YA fiction, fantasy, and just well written fiction in any genre).

I would prefer to not be a captain. This time.

Nikki ~ The Nocturnal Bookworm (nyxreadsstuff) I’ve got both of you on the participants list. I’m going to mention the challenge again when I send out the group message announcing the poll for May. We have had a few people join the group since it was announced so I’m hoping we will have more sign up.

Hi!! I would like to sign up!!
Name: Lola
On average how many books do you read per month: depends how long, short, genre, I will estimate 2-5
Top 3 favorite genres (I’m going to try and spread out interest among teams): Animal fantasy {if that's what it's called}, fantasy, thriller
Are you willing to be team captain? Maybe... I don't know exactly what you do...
Special Request{s}: If it is okay, may I please be on a team with Noor?

Btw, I don't know if you want my least favorite genres, but just in case this is helpful, historical and non-fiction are the ones that get me bad. If this isn't helpful, just ignore it!!

Team captains just keep up with the point total. That's the main thing.

I've got everyone up to this point on the participants list :)

Lola | 74 comments Also, just a question, but how did you create your own group?

Nikki ~ The Nocturnal Bookworm (nyxreadsstuff) Lola wrote: "Also, just a question, but how did you create your own group?"

If you go to the groups page in the top right there is a link that says create a group. It’s above the browse by tags section :)

Nikki ~ The Nocturnal Bookworm (nyxreadsstuff) I will be making the teams next Tuesday so if you are thinking about signing be sure to do so by Monday night!

message 24: by Cyn (new)

Cyn | 78 comments So, to clarify, do all the books used for May have to be Paranormal? Or could they be any genre

Nikki ~ The Nocturnal Bookworm (nyxreadsstuff) All the books for May have to be paranormal, as part of the challenge is to explore the genre of the month. Any sub type or sub genre of paranormal is fine too. It doesn't necessarily have to have it listed as the main page genre as long as something paranormal is a big part of the book. For ideas and inspiration this is what the genre page on goodreads says:

Paranormal books involve unusual experiences that lack a scientific explanation. Some popular subjects in paranormal books are supernatural creatures, ESP, clairvoyance, ghosts, UFOs, telepathy, and psychics.

A subgenre of paranormal books and of romances is paranormal romance. These books focus mainly on the romantic relationships with a background theme of vampires, shapeshifters, ghosts, time travel, fantastical beings, and psychic abilities.

If anyone wants or needs clarification on if something counts just ask. I feel like I will be fairly lenient for this challenge on if books fit the category for the month. If you can reasonably justify it I'm pretty much going to be ok with it.

Nikki ~ The Nocturnal Bookworm (nyxreadsstuff) Announcemnt

The question of if the books of the month count for anything special has been brought up in one of the team threads and to be honest I hadn't really thought about it so I wanted to get the opinion of participants.

I'm open to changing things since this is the first month and things are only just getting started, and making the books of the month have a special bonus or incentive but want to know what everyone else participating thinks.

message 28: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 158 comments I think it is kind of a cool idea to have a bonus of sorts for the BOTM in the challenge. What I am not sure of is how to make that work. An extra flat point bonus for the team for each member who reads a BOTM? The ability to have it count for two letters instead of one? Not sure if it would be too complicated to make it worth it.

message 29: by Lola (new)

Lola | 74 comments I think giving a bonus for the BOTM's is a great idea!! Thank you, Jenny, for asking in our team thread!! I also think it would be a good idea for the BOTM to count as two letters. That might encourage people to read them!!

message 30: by Cyn (new)

Cyn | 78 comments I love the idea of the BOTM counting for 2 letters!

Nikki ~ The Nocturnal Bookworm (nyxreadsstuff) Sounds like the BotM counting for two letters each seems to be the most popular :) I'll update the rules/info posts but:

Official Announcemnt

The books of the month can each count for two letters for each instead of just one. To further clarify that means if you were to read both of them that would take care of four letters right there

message 32: by Lola (new)

Lola | 74 comments Hey!! I can't tell. Can anyone tell me if Gwendy's Button Box counts as paranormal? I mean, one character can look into the future and practically seems to be able to appear and disappear. There is also a magic-ish box that can blow up any continent or anywhere with the push of a button.

Nikki ~ The Nocturnal Bookworm (nyxreadsstuff) Lola wrote: "Hey!! I can't tell. Can anyone tell me if Gwendy's Button Box counts as paranormal? I mean, one character can look into the future and practically seems to be able to appear and dis..."

sounds good enough for me and looks like 30 people shelved it as paranormal so I'm saying it counts :)

KK, thanks!!

Nikki ~ The Nocturnal Bookworm (nyxreadsstuff) ***Participants, as it nears the end of the month make sure that you are adding books to your read shelf or at least rating them so that it can be verified before updating the leader board at the end of the month.***

Thanks! :D

Nikki ~ The Nocturnal Bookworm (nyxreadsstuff) Special Announcement!!

Points Extravaganza For June!

Not only will there be three genre words for this month (so that themes that happened before the challenge began won't feel left out), but if you choose to use a book that is of that genre for a letter in that word it counts as double points! (50 instead of 25). Other that that since this is members choice month any genre is allowed though reading a wide range is encouraged.

message 37: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 158 comments Nikki, any new members joining this challenge? I noticed the numbers for your (our) group are increasing. Very cool- well done.

Nikki ~ The Nocturnal Bookworm (nyxreadsstuff) Haven’t had anyone yet but if someone posts here saying they want to I’m definitely hoping to get more participants :)

message 39: by Nikki ~ The Nocturnal Bookworm (last edited Jun 24, 2018 10:39PM) (new)

Nikki ~ The Nocturnal Bookworm (nyxreadsstuff) Made another mentions in the announcement about sign ups, and wanted to ask current participants feelings on adding people onto existing teams if only a couple more people sign up. Right now I have three people on each team but I had honestly originally wanted to make teams of 5. Up to y'all though if you are fine and happy and want to stick with just making new teams only and no additions I'm cool with that :)

message 40: by Cyn (new)

Cyn | 78 comments oh! more team members would be great :)

message 41: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 158 comments I am good with more team members as well.
Sorry for the delay- quidditch.
Wait until you see the looooooong list of titles I will be adding to the Dragons when I have time. Wow.

Nikki ~ The Nocturnal Bookworm (nyxreadsstuff) Current month layout posts updated I'll look at point totals and update the leader board tomorrow after sleep lol

message 43: by Nikki ~ The Nocturnal Bookworm (last edited Jul 01, 2018 05:40PM) (new)

Nikki ~ The Nocturnal Bookworm (nyxreadsstuff) Leader board is updated and as people post saying they want to join teams I will try to spread new participants out to flesh out the teams. If you know anyone who may be interested in joining please let them know to post saying they are interested. My goal is to get both teams to 5 people before making new ones.

message 44: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 158 comments Nikki, I seem to be the only one of the Dragons that is participating any more. It was just me last month, and so far this month. Have you heard from Lola or Noor?
Is there anyone who is looking to join a team that can come over to mine? It is getting a little silly.

Nikki ~ The Nocturnal Bookworm (nyxreadsstuff) I’m going to message them and see and so far no one has said they are looking to join a team. :( I totally agree it’s not cool and I did post it again in the last group message to hopefully get people.

message 46: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 158 comments Thanks Nikki.

Nikki ~ The Nocturnal Bookworm (nyxreadsstuff) With the lack of participants Jenny and Cyn how would you two like to proceed? Do you want to continue the challenge? Perhaps just as a group challenge instead of competing for points? or is there anyone you know you may be able to recruit? or did you want to just abandon it? I hate that I haven't been able to drawn in any more members to join in :(

message 48: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 158 comments I don't know really. I hate to abandon it, but one thing I want out of a challenge is the fun of working in a team. Right now I am just listing books. Yes it is fun trying to fill out all the letters, but I would rather do that with others.

Perhaps just join the teams into one for now and just make it a spell it out challenge?

Or, stop it for now until more people sign up.

Nikki ~ The Nocturnal Bookworm (nyxreadsstuff) I’m down for fusing into one team. We could even try to join the names if you wanted? The Draconic Order? Or something else? Fun how do you feel? I know you’ve been super active and I’ve gotten a couple books for this month I’m 2/3 through I just need to finish but I haven’t heard from our third teammate.

message 50: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 158 comments I'll go for that. I have read a bunch already this month, and I have a couple I haven't posted yet.

I have linked them to letters on the Dragon thread.
