We had a request to try a theme or topic. I thought I would make it a challenge first and see if anyone was interested. If you are all interested, we can change topic/themes every month. I will start:

Theme Challenge: Read 2 books this month with/or about mermaids.

Rules: No page limit
It is ok to reread a book
Must be something mermaid related

Anyone interested?

Emily Kestrel | 22 comments OK, I have picked my mermaid books: Sea and Sky by Heather Crews and Into the Drowning Deep by Mira Grant. After I finish the books I've already started, it's mermaid time!

Into the Drowning Deep by Mira Grant, looks good. I hope you like them both. I have not made my decisions yet but will post when I pick.

I did think this book sounds fun and it sounds mermaid related Serial Killer Princess by R.J. Blain . I think this one will be my first one to try.

Sylvia Walker | 20 comments Into the Drowning Deep by Mira Grant sounds a little too scary for me, but the mermaid list on goodreads is full of choices...I'm going to interlibrary loan a couple!

Alana | 19 comments I read "The Music of Dolphins" by Karen Hesse today. It is targeted for tweens but very thought-provoking nonetheless. I think it can count as a mermaid story!

Great one down then, Alana!

Alana | 19 comments Oh! I've got "The Mermaid Chair!" Somewhere. I read it years ago and did not love it; don't remember much about it except maybe some good imagery. Maybe it will be better the second time around.

My other book I am choosing for this theme is The Mermaid's Revenge by Amy Cross . It looks good. I will try to finish our group read and then see if I can read these books. Fingers crossed . Some months are better reading months for me than others. :)

That one looks good too, Aly! I've really enjoyed a couple of Amy Cross's books. Not all of them, but when she's good, she's really good.

Emily Kestrel | 22 comments Yesterday I finished my first mermaid theme read Siren's Secret (Dark Seas, #1) by Debbie Herbert It's a romantic suspense/paranormal romance. The heroine, Shelly, is a mermaid who is being targeting by a serial killer after she witnessed him throwing a body into the ocean. It was actually a pretty fun story.

Sylvia Walker | 20 comments I finished my reread of Patrica A. McKillip's The Changeling Sea. I love McKillip's modern fairy tales; it's like reading poetry. I'm not sure if we're dealing with a mermaid or a sea witch here; she definitely has a heart of stone. I just started The Undrowned Child by Michelle Lovric. This one is imaginative and magical, too. It's a children's book, although some of Venice's early history is pretty gruesome!

I have started Serial Killer Princess and it is different than other books and I have been reading lately. So far, it is funny and entertaining.

message 19: by Kenny (new)

Kenny Hyman Lies Beneath by Anne Greenwood Brown! All over it!

message 20: by Emily Kestrel (new)

Emily Kestrel | 22 comments I just finished my second mermaid book Into the Drowning Deep (Rolling in the Deep, #1) by Mira Grant . It was a good horror/sci fi mix--lots of gory scenes and long passages of "science talk" as a crew of scientists go in search of killer mermaids. A little bit too long, perhaps, but I enjoyed it.

So far this one is ok but I haven't made it to my next pick yet. Anyone else interesting in this challenge?

message 22: by Patricia (new)

Patricia | 971 comments If I could finish the books I have to review I would be. They keep multiplying. It's getting ridiculous. I specifically got some mermaid books as freebies for this challenge but haven't had a chance to read them.

I didn't even get a chance to get past the first couple of chapters of the last book I listed under what are you reading now. I have read about a dozen others though.

Any ideas on a new theme read?

Patricia | 971 comments I have a bunch of WWII historical fiction arcs. They're releasing quite a few about women who served in the resistance as well as in intelligence in WWII. I've also seen them about women pilots and women who smuggled Jews out of Europe. This is really a new thing, highlighting how vital women were in the war effort. They were being smuggled in to work with the resistance to blow up German trains and complexes.

Is anyone interested in these?
