Sorry for the delay! I had a really busy week prepping for my husband's birthday, plus a busy week at work. I'm just going to go over the books that should have been on Thursday's update, so I actually have something to post this Thursday.

Finished: The Red Tent - this was my bestseller from the year I graduated. ALso counting it for ATY's literary fiction prompt. I liked this more than I expected, there was a lot of Sumerian mythology and it was well written. However I am glad I got through it, because I don't have kids and I don't particularly want kids, so that was a LOT of mensuration and birthing talk in one book.

Children of Blood and Bone - Book with alliteration in the title. Also counting for ATY's book with a body part in the title. I really loved this. I got sucked in and couldn't put it down, and it's been a while since I read a book and immediately wanted the second. Which wont' be out for another year at least, considering this just came out a month or two ago.

Turtles All the Way Down - I tore through this one in a day, it was really good. However it did really affect my mood, since it's my mental illness prompt and it's basically watching someone spiral down into a breakdown. Still was really good.

Currently reading:

Song of Solomon - This will be my read harder Oprah book club pick. I've been dragging my feet on it so not very far yet.

QOTW:

When you are on vacation, are you more or less likely to read a lot?

I tend to find that while I'll read on the plane, I usually end up doing SO MUCH on vacations that I read far less than normal. This is as an adult. My husband and I are not really beach people, so when we go on vacations it tends to be places where we DO stuff. Hiking, going to museums, walking around gardens etc. When I was a kid, a lot of our vacations WERE beach vacations and I did read tons on them.

Hello All,

Just a quick update from my desk at work. Last week I finished Dune as my book set on another planet. This was a re-read for me, but it's been a while. I enjoyed it, but it took me almost 2 weeks to get through. I think I'll read the next one for my sequel prompt. I picked up a lot more reading it this time around then when I was much younger.

I'm currently reading Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil as my book with a time of day in the title. My husband and I did a mini-honeymoon in Savanah 4 years ago, which is when I first learned about this book. It's been on my "to read" list ever since, so this seemed like a good reason to finally get around to it. It's also my second true crime ever (the first being In Cold Blood earlier this year). It's okay. So far I'm 1/3 of the way through, and it's all still character vignettes, so it doesn't feel like a really story yet. I'm hoping it will pick up soon. Until then, it's nice to remember being at many of the locations mentioned in the book.

QOTW: Like Sheri, I do a lot of reading in transit, but tend to be too active to get a lot of reading done once I get to the destination.

Daniele Powell (danielepowell) | 183 comments I've been on a few road trips since I last posted, so I've made progress!

Completed a bunch of books, mostly old-school, campy sci-fi:
- Plague Ship Loved it. Fits the "female writer with a male pen name" prompt. Currently reading the sequel, Voodoo Planet, which I'm sad to report I'm just not getting into.
- The Time Machine for the "time travel" prompt. Not wowed, but enjoyed it,
- Project Mastodon for the "animal in the title" prompt. Enjoyable read, but needs a sequel.
- A Princess of Mars A fun read. Will definitely explore more by Edgar Rice Burroughs.
- A Spaceship Named McGuire Lovely and light read. Felt a bit like Douglas Adams one generation removed. The resolution irked my feminist fiber, though. Stuck it as the "fave prompt from a previous year's challenge", under "book with non-human character" (2015).
- Lastly, I Am Legend, which fit the "set in the decade you were born" prompt. Haven't seen the movie, which I hear veered off with its ending. I liked it as is, though.

That puts me at 23/40 + 4/10 for Popsugar 2018. I haven't taken the time to check whether these fit in any other challenges.

QOTW: Agreed with the above. Travel is is prime reading time. After that, I'm not a lie on the beach kinda vacationer, so not much reading time.

I'm just about done with Accidental Brothers: The Story of Twins Exchanged at Birth and the Power of Nature and Nurture. This has been super interesting and a big expansion on the Colombian twins switched at birth.

I've also read some of Cringeworthy: A Theory of Awkwardness. It is only okay so far but I'm not that far in. It seems a bit repetitive at the moment. I had been switching between this and Accidental Brothers, but the other one won out. I'll go back to this and see if it picks up. It's a random non-fiction that I happened to see on the New Book shelf at the library so if I don't get into it, I'm okay returning it as a DNF.

QOTW: I don't find that my reading changes too much when traveling. I mostly read just before bed because I definitely am a doer on vacation.

Sara | 55 comments I finished Journey to the Center of the Earth. It was an interesting story - some cool ideas about what might be in the center of the earth. I tried reading it as a serial novel, which was it's downfall for me. Eventually I just let the issues pile up so I could read more at a time.

That's all I've finished recently. On the bright side, that puts me at 13/26 for the year!

QOTW: If we're on a low key vacation (fishing in northern MN), then I read a bunch. Otherwise, it's usually only on the plane.
