Please post your general questions about the Summer 2018 Challenge here. Specific questions about individual tasks should be posted in the Help Threads for those tasks. You may find answers to some questions in FAQs.

Trish (trishhartuk) | 3553 comments So, I have a book I want to read, with the MPG Childrens. The AR information is isn't in the UK version at all. It is in the US version: AR Quiz No. 143032 EN Fiction; IL: MG+ - BL: 4.2 - AR Pts: 10.0. AR Quiz Types: RP, VP

Looking at the children's rules, it says that MG+ can be used with no restrictions. However, it also says that MG must have a BL of 5.0 or higher, which this doesn't.

I've never seen an MG+ book with a BL of less than 5.0 until this one, so I thought I'd better check which rule takes precedence in this particular case.

Bianca Rose (biancarose) | 245 comments Hi, I have a different general question. I often use the mobile phone goodreads app. For the last two seasons, I have been able to read all topics except the task list. When I open the tasks, the whole app has a freak out and shuts down. Has anyone else had this problem? And does anyone know how to fix it? Thanks!

If it's MG+, you don't go to the BL, etc. Stick with the interest level. Presumably, this is because there may be books for slightly older readers (thus the interest level) who are only reading at a 4th grade level.

It's not a perfect system, but it's reasonably workable!

I don't use the app, so can't help you on that, but maybe someone else here can. I do know that there are supposedly many issues with the app.

Cool. Thank you for the clarification.

message 8: by Andrea (new)

Andrea I have had the same issue with the phone app and have to log in at home to see the tasks. Though the current list was working a few days ago, so I think it may be size related (Amount of info in the post?). I have no solution but just know you are not alone. That’s why I make my reading plan post pretty specific as a reference

Lost Planet Airman | 177 comments If anyone sends this app problem to GR to try and turn in a trouble report, I just accessed both Spring Tasks and Summer Tasks, both successfully, from the app on the "World's Oldest Working iPhone 4S" (or so my daughter says).

I have never had an issue viewing the tasks via the app on my iPhone before, but I did have the crash issue when I tried just now. Hoping it's a temporary glitch.

message 11: by Bianca (new)

Bianca Rose (biancarose) | 245 comments Hmm, maybe it is only certain types of phones. It’s not a big deal, just a little frustrating that it consistently crashes for me so need to use the computer to view tasks. No matter though, just need to find a workaround.

message 12: by Shelby (new)

Shelby (stang_lee) | 905 comments I have a general question since it's been awhile since I've participated in SRC and I want to make sure I'm reporting things correctly. If I read an ebook, that has a paperback listed, but the paperback does not list a page count do I need to post it to the verification thread? I was just noticing a number of the MM books I'm reading lately follow this format. The ebook/kindle listings have the page count, but for some reason a lot of the paperback don't.

message 13: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 8808 comments you can post in the librarian thread and someone can edit the paperback record to reflect the page count

message 14: by Nick (new)

Nick (doily) | 3310 comments I am reading The Poetry of Pablo Neruda and have suddenly realized I might have a problem.

Though most of the poems are English translations, every now and then a poem appears in its original Spanish, which I do not read. I have skimmed the pages, and it appears that about 80 pages of the text are in Spanish. (Not many, but some poems are given in the original Spanish, then with a translation.)

1) Does this mean I cannot get credit for reading the entire book?

2) If I can get credit -- which I really want -- then the book has 996 pages, of which 80 are in a language I do not read. I should still be able to claim 2 BB tickets, correct?

Thanks.

Yes, that's an advance reader copy. You can use it. Link to the edition that is closest to the ARC and include that is was an ARC in your post.

Different editions may have different subtitles. The edition you read is the one that you use to fulfill a task.
If you read an ebook the print edition is just used to verify the page numbers.

You would need to have a GR librarian take a look and make any necessary updates or corrections to the first published date before you could claim a ticket.

Dee - the description on the GR book page says "...Originally published in 1926 in San Antonio, Texas as El sol de Texas, the novel chronicles the struggles of two Mexican immigrant families..."

Is that something you can use, or do you need an outside source?

To be used for a SRC task a book must be read completely.
There may be a few words, phrases, footnotes, passages, etc. in a language that you do not understand. You can still "read" this information by considering its context, form, origin, etc.

You would need to do more than "skim" the occasional passages, but if you do some analysis of the poem's form, pattern, etc. that would qualify as "reading".

But only you know if you have read a book completely.
We trust our members to follow this important rule.

Typically an outside source because anyone can change GR book data...I looked at WorldCat which is basically linked to the library of Congress and a record for most published works anc if listed 2007

message 22: by Julia (new)

Julia (julia103) | 2613 comments Google Books has an image of the copyright page as part of the preview.

It says copyright 2007 but above that says "El Sol de Texas was first printed in San Antonio, Texas in 1926"

Should I re-post this in the Librarian's Group?

Thanks Sandy. I think I understand. I cannot just skip over, or "skim" the poems in Spanish, but if I stop when I come to one and meticulously compare it to its English translation, word for word, phrase by phrase, then that would count as reading. That should work for me, as I read French, and I should be able to tell what is going on in the Spanish. Such meticulous reading is demanded of poetry anyway. It may take a little extra time, but I am determined. Pablo Neruda deserves his Nobel Prize, IMHO.

Thanks Dlmrose, for taking the time to answer these silly translation questions. As it turns out, I am not doing a very good job of translating the Spanish, taking large amounts of time at an arduous task. My library has a much slimmer volume of Neruda poetry which will fit the challenge, so I will just use that. But thanks anyway! I appreciate it.

Ed Lehman | 797 comments I'm not sure if Just So Stories qualifies for any tasks. It has a children's MPG...and when I check it scores IL: MG - BL: 6.4 - AR Pts: 5.0. The 6.4 is higher than the minimum but the 5.0 is lower.....must both numbers be higher than the minimum, I suspect so, but I was confused by the explanation.

The rules state that both numbers must be higher than the minimum, so this doesn't work.

A "192 page Manga book" would work- did you mean a 92 page manga?

message 29: by Shanna_redwind (last edited Jul 08, 2018 04:23PM) (new)

Shanna_redwind | 754 comments No, it's 192 pages. I forgot about the 200 page minimum for manga and comics and I was just being sure that the same rules would apply for the one shorter book for a graphic novel. ( 20 pages less than the minimum was what I was going by)

Please link to the book in question.
Graphic novels, manga or collected comic book issues must be at least 100 pages.
Collections of syndicated, periodical or internet comic strips, single or short-format panels, or cartoons must be at least 200 pages to be used for SRC tasks.

message 31: by Shanna_redwind (new)

Shanna_redwind | 754 comments Ok, I read the rule wrong. My eyes cut off the last words on the line and lumped all of the 'graphic' books together. Thanks.

Here's the book: Attack on Titan: Lost Girls The Manga, Vol. 1, but I've realized that it only needs 100 pages.

Jenifer wrote: "What do I do if Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ only has foreign language version of a book that I read in English?"

You could ask a librarian to add your edition. /topic/show/...

You also could double check by putting in the isbn, rather than title or author. Sometimes books get added in multiple times and the one you want may not show up - I've found that sometimes the only way to find the actual edition I read is to use the isbn.
