15.10 - Time to Kick Back and Relax!
It's summer - time to relax. Read a book written by one of your most read authors from your Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ "read" shelf.

Go to My Books. Scroll down in the left column to "Your Reading Activity." Click on "Most Read Authors" to see your list of authors. Read a book by one of those authors - you may use ANY of the authors on your list.

If you do not have any books/authors listed on Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ, you may use the top 10 authors listed for one of the moderators: Sandy, Dlmrose, Kristina Simon.

Ignore the numbering on the list, since they assign the same numbers to ties. Simply count the top 10 listed.

REQUIRED: Include in your post the number of books that you (or the mod whose list you used) have read by that author.

Bianca Rose (biancarose) | 245 comments Sorry but I’m a bit confused. If you are using your own list of favourite authors, can you use anyone on that list or only the Top 10?

Bianca, the top 10 only applies if you are using the moderators list of authors.

Bea is correct.

Lost Planet Airman | 177 comments Hey, I posted a note (now below in this post) because the GR method of deciding my "Favorite Authors" is excluding my _real_ favorite authors (because I keep them on a separate list from my "read" list).

I'm hoping we can change the wording of this challenge a little, so we can pick "true" favorite authors, and not my "false" GR generated list.

================================================
So, I'm having difficulty with 15.10. But it is more than a standard question, it is actually an issue, so I thought I would start by presenting it here for consideration.

15.10 ("Read a book written by one of your favorite authors") is a GREAT idea, and I was very enthused when I read it.

But I am one of those people who has a separate exclusive shelf for some of my favorite authors, or in my case, favorite series.

Following the directions in the 15.10 task creates a list of favorite authors FROM THE "READ" exclusive list. So all the authors on my "series" list - Larry Niven, Clive Cussler, Janet Evanovich, and several others -- are excluded, as they don't show on my Favorite Authors list.

Anything we can do to fix this up?

Sorry, but it's not a question of changing the wording a little - the whole task is based on the GR list of "Most Read Authors." And, that list is based on the books marked read.

As far as I can see, you have two options- use the author list based on the books that you have marked read, or mark the books on your special shelf as read, so that those authors will appear on your "most read" list. This would mean that you'd have to make your special shelf non-exclusive, but of course it would not prevent your having a special shelf for your "real" favorite authors.

And, FYI, this thread, rather than the General Questions thread, is the appropriate place for this question, since it applies only to this specific task and not to the challenge as a whole.

Lost Planet Airman | 177 comments The task is based on the GR list of "Most Read Authors" because the task creators have chosen to make it that way, but the same creators have also said "Read a book written by one of your favorite authors."

So GR's algorithm forces readers like me to adhere to the letter of the task, and skip over truly favorite authors. In my case, my list goes down to authors with two books listed, as "my favorites". Or, like you suggested, I could "game the system" by moving books around.

But, in the fairness of this reading challenge game we have set for ourselves as a community, I'd prefer to play within the intent of the task, and use a truly favorite author without manipulating my lists. And the solution I see, from that perspective, is to allow greater flexibility if a player's favorite authors reside on other lists.

It is not an unreasonable suggestion that players be trusted to establish that they are playing within the intent of a challenge. In the Summer '18 Challenge, you already have Task 10.1 (Summer Blockbusters -- "Read a book related in some way to one of the 15 summer movies on this list"), and "related in some way" is even more vague that what I am asking.

Or, in Spring 2018 Task 25.4 (among others), players are required to "state that the books are new to you", putting trust in the player to honestly report fulfillment of a tasks intent.

A very simple additional wording, that would benefit players for the upcoming challenge, would be "If a favorite author does not appear on your list, note the number of "books read" at the bottom of your "Most Read Authors" list, then go to your "My Books" page, "All" bookshelves, and sort by author. You may use an author who you have read more than the noted number form your "Most Read Authors" list."

We're still, what, 7 days or so from finalizing the tasks? Please give at least some consideration to change that would help some more players easily meet the intent of this task, even though we use GR a little differently from the norm.

------------------------------------------

So, I'm not aiming to be a pain about this. The point of the Challenge, I hope, is for readers to have fun reading, and task creators to have fun coming up with tasks. But I'm a working single-parent, so I know I will never have time to read enough books (6 books per week for a season!) to finish a challenge, and that sucks some of the fun away for me.

Then, to feel like I am on an unfair footing because I use GR differently, started to take more fun away. And to feel like I was getting a brush-off, when other tasks have a crazy amount of flexibility built in, that didn't help either.

So yeah, I can probably move a few books on my shelves to make this task easy to fulfill, and remember to move them back later, and get them resorted to the right spot on my list. But I'd like to think, too, that the Mods have the time, energy, and grace to increase the fun that everyone has, participating in the SRC.

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 4418 comments Mike .. you already state that you won't have time to read all the tasks. Just skip this one and fulfill others that are easier for you to manage. That's what I do.

sorry that the task doesn't work for you, but we won't be changing the task requirements.

Thanks for the suggestion. It's not the way I usually go about planning my tasks, but I'll keep it in mind. But I also don't think the request for consideration of my proposed solution is unreasonable, so if it still doesn't work for the mods, I'd like to hear. It would make this group feel more a community to me. And less, I don't know, rigid?

Rosemary | 613 comments Sometimes I think the tasks are worded in a certain way to make it quicker for them to check our posted books. I think that's why the tasks are sometimes very specific or seem rigid. And yes some tasks are very flexible but I'm sure the mix is planned.

It must take a huge amount of time for them to check that all of our books fulfill the tasks. Over 2,000 posts and counting this current season, and lots of them with more than one task per post.

It is what it is.

You do still have time to remove the break between paragraphs 3 and 4, to stop the confusion Bea answered in message 6.

Please read the Rules of the Challenge:
"8. Re-reads are acceptable unless otherwise stated in a specific task. "

sorry, no - the book must be written by one author, or two who are both on your list..
