Synopsis

Hey! Just wondering if you were planning to break up your reading any certain way- we have soccer tournaments this coming weekend, I want to make sure I don't get too far behind you! Looking forward to this, I bought it almost a year ago 0.o

I'm fine going slow - I don't have any formal plan in mind. I'm reading several books at once right now, so probably several chapters a day but I'll wait for you. Or we can delay until after the weekend if that's better for you.

Chapter 1:

I like Maisy, but no-no person I've known for one week is going to watch my child-that's crazy isn't it? Although I'm interested in how this dinner will go. The crime thing...I'm not sure what to say yet. I did think that Gigi was going to say more about the adjustment, just because you want a smaller community or slower lifestyle doesn't mean there isn't an adjustment. Also, I hope Roe isn't like a prop, I don't like books where the children aren't like "children". Anyway, I'm about 2 margaritas in, and rambling and I'm probably going to stop for now-maybe (hide spoiler)]

Right? I had the same thought about KA-Tate-from sweet Dreams-ya know? Treated Lauren the same way and then told her he apologized so why was she upset. But I think you gotta be careful with alpha Males-they are either swoon-worthy or d-bags! We’ll see how it progresses...i was just kinda like 0.o

(view spoiler)[ I do like Jess, he's bossy, but sweet. I like him with Roe. I like that Roe is not like those perfect unrealistic children in books, she pushes and throws tantrums. I am having a harder time liking Gigi honestly. The snake thing scared me! Jeesh! Also, are we thinking that this Wes guy is our bad guy? And this John Doe thing...my first thought was a gay bashing and maybe that's why he didn't want to tell the police everything. I don't know... (hide spoiler)]

(view spoiler)[ So...I have issues. First, I feel like she has definitely borrowed from KA. But anyhoo. This relationship with Gigi and Jess is a hot mess. Especially after he yelled at Roe. And she's so damn weak. And him using Roe to get her to go to the game? WTF? I don't know. Also, if there is arson and someone taunts the fire chief like Wes did, I mean, are they saying that they released the cause, because he knew how the fire started, I would have arrested his narrow ass right then because that is basically a fucking confession! Overall I'm enjoying the story. It does seem like Wes is gonna be a bad guy, but I'm hoping it's not quite that transparent. I didn't think about that angle for Alex Benson, but that's a good theory. It feels like KA-lite. The characters are somewhat similar, but the depth is missing. (view spoiler)[ I'm less ambivalent about Gigi and more annoyed. I understand why she's so insecure, but it's tedious to read about. And yeah, the way Jess yelled at Roe was just wrong. As for Wes, why don't they have someone following him 24/7 or at least a lot of the time? (hide spoiler)]

(view spoiler)[Exactly! KA has those moments that melt you, father-daughter, mother-son, love interest, children, that just bring tears to your eyes. This does not. I find her Gigi completely annoying. And I do NOT understand why Wes is not under surveillance. Its crazy. I mean, that's a few times he has taunted and then to come into the cafe like that--I didn't get much further than that last night, but jeesh-something is up and he is afraid, so... (hide spoiler)]

Some other things (view spoiler)[ that were bugging me - Gigi gets hurt again with her sprained wrist and then....nothing.. voila - it's fine. What was the point other than another fight between her and Jess? (hide spoiler)]

I'm up to Chapter 22
(view spoiler)[ I was surprised at what happened to Wes and I'm trying to figure out who dunnit. Maybe the dad of that kid who gave Gigi the creeps after they vandalized her house? Or maybe Everett has something to do with it?

So I didn't get how Jess was so upset at having Roe's friends over for sleepover? He seems to love Roe and kids in general and then acts like that when there are several of them in the house? And I don't like his anger issues. I also don't like how he keeps saying it's HIS house. (hide spoiler)]

There are parts that the good parts of the characters come through and I'm trying to give the author a break since this is her debut novel. I feel bad just picking things apart! :-)

I'm surprised at how high the ratings are for this book. My expectations were pretty high, which I guess is why I'm so critical.

Yeah, I'm kinda disappointed. There were things that felt disjointed to me (view spoiler)[ now, i have 3 kids so there were some things that were like...ah hell no. Like when he used Roe to get her to go to the game, or when she said she didn't want Roe to think she could throw a tantrum and get what she wanted. To be perfectly honest, the whole relationship happened so damn fast, I don't think I would have some man staying at my house that quick, but alas, that is me.
I was super disappointed that Everette turned into like a caricature of an evil villain-eye roll. Poor Maisy, I did feel really really bad for her. I have no interest in Lissy, I would like to see Maisy happy though. (hide spoiler)]

I'm writing my review. Ugh...I think 2.5 stars but I will round up to 3.
We've tied twice, one got rained out, my other son lost his, we have another this afternoon.

I'm done. So, the book was okay for me. Like I said earlier, I had higher expectations. I thought the (view spoiler)[drug problems in the town kinda make Jess look like Gomer Pyle in not being able to figure anything out. I mean there are less than 900 people that live there. (hide spoiler)]

I did like the epilogue and I'm glad (view spoiler)[Maisy kept her baby and found some peace and a new career. I'm also glad Milo is okay and found love. As for Lissy, I don't care about her but I would like to know more about Silas. (hide spoiler)]

I'll probably read another book in the series as there are parts I liked, hoping that the stuff I didn't like is just a new author learning her way. I giving this 3 stars.

Sounds good - I've got a few others lined up first, but I do want tol read another maybe towards the end of June or in July
