It's a little early to be talking about this buuuut I want to make sure people know we're doing it, have time to gather the books/audiobooks, and finish books they're currently reading/were planning to read before we start. Plus I didn't want to forget and then the week before go oh shoot and not give people enough notice. :)

We are going to be reading and/or listening to the whole Harry Potter series starting on Mr. Potter's birthday - July 31!

I have never listened to the audiobooks and saved up Audible credits last year to buy them all! And I have not re-read HP in many years, probably since the last one came out! :o I know, right?! And I call myself a HP fan...lol. ;)

Who's going to travel back to Hogwarts with me?!

❤M Gentilcore (rachelx) | 99 comments This is so cool! I have seen all the movies multiple times but have never read one of the books! I know, right! I have read other JK Rowling such as Casual Vacancy and all three Cormoran Strike books. I've been meaning to get around to reading all of the HP books but it always seemed like such a daunting task. This buddy read will make it so much fun. Thank you! I'm in!

Amy | 40 comments Yay! I can't decide whether to read or listen...

We went to the studios in London last weekend and it has fanned the flames of my HP obsession! Actually just started reading Harry Potter and the Cursed Child - have seen the play but never read it.

Marie, you will love them! Lots of extra details that don't end up in the movies :)

message 4: by Annie (new)

Annie | 424 comments I've been wanting to reread the series also. I'm in!

message 5: by Shelby (new)

Shelby Suderman | 2169 comments I’m not sure I’ll have time for this, but it’s a great idea!

message 6: by Dawn Michelle (new)

Dawn Michelle | 3469 comments I have been listening to the audiobooks this year and its been a delightful experience. I am loving them all over again. I am on book 5 so I am way ahead of everyone, but I also have to wait a hundred years between each book from OverDrive, so some of you may catch up with me! :-) So I can sort of be in. Yes? LOL

I have the Cormoran Strike books to read and am looking forward to them. I read CV and hated that book - it was just so meh for me.

Stacie (stacieh) | 1945 comments You'd better believe I'm in! :D

And Marie, I'm so jealous- This is one of the series that I wish I could read for the first time again.

message 9: by Annie (new)

Annie | 424 comments I originally read all the HP books as read-alouds to my children as the books were released. Very fond memories spanning over quite a few years!

I'm looking forward to actually curling up by myself with each book and again getting lost in the halls of Hogwarts. I bet it will be a whole different experience from reading aloud, plus it will be great to read the complete series at once!

message 10: by Carol (new)

Carol (carol07) | 4198 comments I just read #s 1 & 2, so I might jump in at #3. I just reread the series last year, but am not hesitant at this at all.

Yay, so excited for this one!! Do we think sub threads with each book would be helpful? At least this way people could just join in on the books that they want to read. It will also help for those that read faster/slower.

Yes, I think we'll do that when we get closer to it! :)

Karol | 182 comments This is an absolutely fabulous idea! I am one of the few people in the world who've never read any of the Harry Potter books. It's high time I give it a whirl so I'll plan to join you for at least the first 1 or 2.

I've created a new folder specifically for this Buddy Read and I created topics for each book. I will open discussions when we get closer to July 31. So excited!!!

message 19: by Lori (new)

Lori I too read the books to my son as they came out and we both became huge Potter fans. I'm in!

I finished my long audiobook and moved all my shorties to the top of my Audible queue so I can make it to Tuesday without starting a long one or without starting HP1. lol. Plus it's Dewey's in...6 MINUTES! so I needed some shorties to keep me going.

The book and audio version have been available to me several times this month. I kept returning it because it would expire before today. Now I need it and there are so many holds!!! I'm crossing my finger that one of them becomes available by tomorrow.

I never thought to check YouTube. I may do that since I'm still waiting for my library copy. Or, maybe I should just go ahead and use a credit at Audible since today is HP's birthday and the challenge starts today.

How's everyone doing? What book are you on? I just finished Prisoner of Azkaban.

message 28: by Andrea, Moderator (new)

Andrea | 4417 comments Mod
I am about 1/3 through the Prisoner of Azkaban. I have some other books going on the same time so it's been a nice mix. I have to say that I am REALLY enjoying re-reading them all together though. I'm not a re-reader so this is surprising to me :)

message 29: by Nataly (new)

Nataly Martinez Harry Potter is one of my favorite book series so far I am looking forward to the new movie coming out. I have read the whole series as well as watched all the movies. I am looking forward to reading them once again.

Nataly, as much as I love the books I have seen any of the movies.

I don't think I'll be getting to Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (book or audio) until November at this point! I have a few audiobooks to listen to before October (Hell House, The Haunting of Hill House, and Watership Down) and then only King during October!

How is everyone else doing?

message 33: by Stacie (new)

Stacie (stacieh) | 1945 comments I'm still plugging along (well, it's more like a leisurely stroll- "plugging" sounds like a chore, and really I'm just savoring being in the magical world again). I just finished up Goblet of Fire and am going to finish up the two other things I've got going before starting Order of the Phoenix. Maybe I'll be caught up to you by the time you get to Half-Blood Prince, LOL!

message 34: by Andrea, Moderator (new)

I am also still plugging along! I am waiting for the Goblet of Fire. It expired while I was listening to it so now I'm waiting for my turn again. Even though I have access to 6 libraries and each library has tons of copies the wait lists are so long.

message 35: by Shelby (new)

Shelby Suderman | 2169 comments Hey everyone. Just thought I'd mention this podcast I've been listening to that compares movie adaptations to their books, and right now they're making their way through the Harry Potter series. If anyone's interested, it's called This Film is Lit. I'm not reading them right now, but I have in the past and I've seen the movies at least once so I'm enjoying the discussion.

From July 31 to December 7, I have finished listening to the Harry Potter series. What a fun trip. I think I'll save the movies for Christmas weekend and binge them. :) This was the first time I'd read them all so closely together since 2007!!!! I can't believe I let it get that long. I'm looking forward to re-buying them when they're all illustrated. I'm waiting for that boxed set.

How is everyone else doing?

I'm still moving along! I had started the Goblet of Fire but it expired and I'm waiting for it again. That reminds me I should have put the series on my 2019 goal list. I will have to go back and add it.

Stacie (stacieh) | 1945 comments I’m still plugging along. I stalled on book five (that’s the one that’s the most emotionally draining for me) but I’m planning on focusing on 5, 6 and 7 for the holiday readathon. Also, I found out that the third book in the illustrated series came out a while ago, and if it’s not under the tree on Christmas morning I’m going to treat myself to it ASAP :)

Just downloaded Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. Looks like I am in for the long haul at 27 hours!! I was hoping to have this be my last book of the year but it may be my first book of 2019! I have a couple other books I need to finish before I can start this one.
