How's your reading going?

This week I finished:

Lock In - not for a challenge, I just wanted to read the series and i like Scalzi. It's an interesting world he's building with the series!

Head On - also not for challenge, book two

Mech Cadet Yu Vol. 1 - For Read Harder's comic not published by marvel/dc/image, it's fun sort of Pacific Rim meets Iron Giant.

Things Fall Apart - For Read Harder's colonial/post-colonial literature. It's interesting because it's set during colonization of Africa, but it's from the perspective of the colonized. It also works for ATY's book from the Amazon 100 books to read in a lifetime list.

Currently Reading:

Had a bit of trouble getting a new read. I was going to read Red Sparrow but I was refreshing myself of the synopsis and I saw a one star review on top. Looking at what it said, I really didn't feel like I wanted to read it, or at least not right now. Maybe after watching the movie, if I ever do. Then I was going to read A Promise of Fire
for my ATY book involving fire, but I really disliked the writing from page one. Reading through reviews, it sounded like again it was going to be a book I wasn't going to actually enjoy. So I am ignoring my library pile at the moment, and reading The Gate to Women's Country for my book with an author sharing my first or last name. It's alright. It's a second-wave feminist novel from the 80s, so there's some views I find pretty problematic built in. But it's interesting at least, even if it's not going to be a top book for me.

With there being so many books being adapted to movies and tv shows, do you generally prefer to read the book first, or watch the media first?

For me, I think it depends on how I feel about the media in question. If it's something I'm really interested in, I might read the book first so I can appreciate the writing without spoilers. However if I'm on the fence, or I don't really have prior knowledge of the book I might just watch the movie or show first, and catch the book later if I really like it.

I DID IT! I *finally* finished The Satanic Verses. What a read. I was starting to despair the story wouldn't have a proper end... but it did. Somewhere among the sub-plot/dream sequences. Loved the writing. Mostly unconvinced about the book. Moving onto lighter fare.

Road tripping this weekend, so I have two audiobooks lined up. Buffering by the lovely Hannah Hart, and Yes, Please by the no-less-lovely Amy Poehler. Here's to hoping I can get Overdrive working in the car.

QOTW: I usually go book first, but there have been instances recently where movie came first and the book was a great discovery after, like The Princess Bride and Ready Player One. I think my stance has softened, so I'm just an opportunist now :)

Currently reading "The Girl in the Tower" (2nd book after "The Bear and the Nightingale"). I love reading about winter in the summer.

QOTW: I usually read the book first, unless I didn't realize that the movie was based on a book (ie. Howl's Moving Castle introduced me to Dianna Wynne Jones. <3 ). That's why I stay thru the credits.

I had to return An Astronaut's Guide to Life on Earth and The Radium Girls: The Dark Story of America's Shining Women to the library. I will get Radium Girls out again and finish it. I'm not sure about Chris Hadfield's book. It was good and interesting, but it felt like he could have used a better editor to tighten it up. I got about halfway through but it was feeling repetitive and my interest waned.

For Radium Girls, so far I've found it interesting but also a bit disturbing and distressing. I want to yell at them and say, "No, ingesting anything like that cannot be okay for you!! Don't do it!" and then it makes me think about what we do currently that is presented as okay but may later have unforeseen ramifications on our health.

Right now I'm finally starting one of the books I selected during my 3 month subscription (a Christmas gift from one of my kids) to The Book Of The Month Club. It is The Last Equation of Isaac Severy. It is a nice story so far after a lot of heavy non-fiction for me.

QOTW: If I'm interested in the book I will tend to read the book first. But if I don't care too much I'll watch the movie and may never read the book. Right now my husband and I have started watching The Expanse.

Susan, I love the Expanse! I read the first book, it helped me figure out the show a bit more. Shows pretty convoluted!

My husband has read the books so he explains anything that isn't clear. We're about 5 or 6 episodes into season 1 so things are making some sense. Maybe it'll motivate me to read the books but it is at the edge of my violence tolerance as it is.

Y’all make me feel like a slug in the reading department. I’m a pretty fast reader, but I work full time, go to school, and knit so reading has to fight with those things for time in my schedule.

I’ve been listening to Audible on my commutes but as it’s sunmer I’ve been into fluffy “popcorn for the brain� romances. I did listen to Devil in the White City, and Eddie Izzard’s Believe Me before moving to romances for a while.

I’m a little over half way through Radium Girls, and it’s fascinating. I find myself getting really angry about how these women were lied to by their company. I’m also astounded by how they dealt with some of the things that happened to their bodies.

Just to let you know, although I said I was headed for lighter reading, Buffering: Unshared Tales of a Life Fully Loaded is an emotionally difficult book. From her strict religious upbringing to coming to terms with her sexuality to her mother's mental illness, it's an eyeopener. Definitely worth the read, though.

This week I finished The Radium Girls: The Dark Story of America's Shining Women. I'm still reeling from what those women went through and the underhandedness of the companies that employed them. I'll save the rest of my thoughts for the book club discussion.

QOTW: If I can read the book first, I will. It usually adds to the movie, though it can be frustrating if the movie deviates too far from the book. Sometimes I'll see the movie with no intention of reading the book. Perhaps it just depends on the day and my mood. haha.

Hello All,

Last week was a bit of a write off for reading time, but I did managed to finish the audio version of The Radium Girls: The Dark Story of America's Shining Women. I'll post to the discussion later this week. I also started Mary Poppins as my childhood classic I've never read prompt, and managed to read about 50 pages of it. I'll hold off on commenting further as I'll have finished it by the end of the week and can give a more complete review then. The only real observation I have to make at this point is how different the book is from the movie.

QOTW: I really prefer to read the book first, but sometimes I don't know a movie is based on a book, so I'll read it afterward. The Martian is one example I can think of recently, and only because it was a prompt from this year! I'm pretty sure I watched the first season of Game of Thrones before reading the book, too, but the books and the series are so bound up in my mind that I can't usually remember what take place in which, hahah. I'm planning a re-watch of all 6 seasons before the last season comes out, so hopefully that will set me straight again.
