Shanna Gilston | 6 comments This book is called The Fifth Wave by Rick Yancey. I watched the movie about two years ago and I loved the movie so much that I decided to order the book online. Also, since I watched the movie a pretty long time ago I thought it would be interesting to notice what parts of the book I can visualize and remember from watching the movie. My favorite character in both the movie and the book is Cassie Sullivan. She’s the main protagonist of the novel and learns how to survive during the alien invasion.
This book tells its story through the main character Cassie. There is an alien invasion and they take her brother Sammy. Ever since then, Cassie’s one goal was to get her little brother back. But the story isn’t just told through Cassie but is also told through Ben, Cassie’s High School crush and Evan, Cassie’s new crush since the apocalypse. Cassie acquires food, water, toiletries, and other essential stuff in order to survive. When she does this she encounters people who could be aliens because the aliens who take and kill citizens look just like any ordinary person. Throughout the book there are five waves which hit the entire human population. The first wave is Lights Out, which is a wave that takes out all electricity and technology and kills half a million people. The second wave is Surfs up, which is a wave where massive tsunamis that wipe out three billion people. The third wave is Pestilence, which is when the aliens infect the remaining survivors with a deadly virus. The fourth wave is the Silencers, which is when the soldiers and commander are only interested in the kids and creates a massacre that kills all of the adults. The fifth wave, which is also the last wave, is a group of highly trained and brainwashed children and teenagers who kill of the innocent people just the “Silencers from the fourth wave didn’t kill.
A weakness is that I just overall liked the movie more than the book. I think this is because the book was pretty boring besides the beginning, it only really caught my attention then. For the plot being about something as thrilling as an alien apocalypse, I don’t think the plot reached its full capability of being amazing. I think this because only at the beginning when Cassie saw the first four waves but later in the book Cassie ends up being alone looking for her brother Sam.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book and thought it was worth reading because it was valuable being able to compare the book to the movie.I liked that in the movie it showed Cassie’s life before the alien invasion and I think the book could’ve used more of what the world was like before the apocalypse. I can tell this book was very well thought-out and I also feel that it would be a great read for anyone who enjoyed The Hunger Games.
