Winter (winter9) | 4971 comments This month we will be reading Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng

In Shaker Heights, a placid, progressive suburb of Cleveland, everything is meticulously planned from the layout of the winding roads, to the colours of the houses, to the successful lives its residents will go on to lead. And no one embodies this spirit more than Elena Richardson, whose guiding principle is playing by the rules.

Enter Mia Warren an enigmatic artist and single mother who arrives in this idyllic bubble with her teenage daughter Pearl, and rents a house from the Richardsons. Soon Mia and Pearl become more than just tenants: all four Richardson children are drawn to the alluring mother-daughter pair. But Mia carries with her a mysterious past, and a disregard for the rules that threatens to upend this carefully ordered community.

When the Richardsons' friends attempt to adopt a Chinese-American baby, a custody battle erupts that dramatically divides the town and puts Mia and Mrs. Richardson on opposing sides. Suspicious of Mia and her motives, Mrs. Richardson becomes determined to uncover the secrets in Mia's past. But her obsession will come at unexpected and devastating costs to her own family and Mia's.

Little Fires Everywhere explores the weight of long-held secrets and the ferocious pull of motherhood-and the danger of believing that planning and following the rules can avert disaster, or heartbreak.

Dlyn will be our discussion leader, thank you!

Megan BG (meganbgreads) | 1560 comments So I thought I wasn't going to be able to find this book. I put it on hold at the library, I put it on hold for the ebook at the library... I didn't want to pay $22 to get it from ThriftBooks... I finally decided to spend about $10 for it on eBay, so I placed a bid... within a couple hours, I got a notification that it's available to pick up at the library and today I got a notification that the ebook has been checked out to me. Hopefully I get outbid. I have about 20 hours left.

So I should be set now. LOL

Sheila Megan, isn’t that the way it always happens!! 😄
If it turns out that you really like the book, then you will have one for your personal library to re-read or loan to friends.

Catka | 270 comments I am in. We have read the other book by Celeste in my bookclub and there was an interesting discussion, so I will give it try also here, in this online club. Might be also interesting :)

Kara (karaayako) | 3984 comments I read this earlier this year, and it might be my favorite book read in 2018 so far. Looking forward to the discussion!

Samantha | 11 comments Plan to read this after I finish my book I’m currently on so I’ll probably start it on the 8th maybe sooner depending on free time to read!

Stacha | 22 comments I have been seeing this novel pop up everywhere, so I may as well jump on the wagon! I'll get a copy later this week.

Sheila I bought a copy before I even knew it would be a group read. Now if I can just get another book club book finished, I can start this one!

Angela Holt (angelaaholt) | 36 comments This was a pretty good book. I wouldn't say my favorite, but definitely worth the read!

Kristy Johnston | 605 comments I read this earlier in the year with my neighborhood book club. It led to some interesting discussions in the group so I look forward to joining in.

Jennifer | 95 comments I’m in. I’ve keep seeing the book mentioned but don’t really know anything about it. Looking forward to it!

What does leading a group discussion entail??"

Sorry the late answer. Not much more than usual participating. It's mostly making sure there's some discussion going on, comment a bit here and there, maybe asking some questions if it gets too quiet.

I definitely do, thank you! :)

Samantha | 11 comments Just finished the book I was reading! Now I can start reading this one hope I can catch up to everyone

Kiriko | 21 comments Just finished the book, I'm not really sure what I think about it yet. It was interesting that's for sure but it did drag at times so it took me a while to get through. I did like a lot of the characters though and was weirdly satisfied with how the Mirabelle-Mai Ling story ended.

´Ü´Çë Neo | 214 comments Haven't taken part in a group read since last year, but have wanted to read this book for a while, and with it being a group-read (and reduced to £0.99 on Kindle) I figured now was the best time to give it a go!

I'm 3 chapters in and enjoying it so far :)

Eileen | 190 comments For those who are interested, Hulu is adaptating the book into a mini serie with Reese Witherspoon and Kerry Washington! :)

Kendall Gardt (kendallgardt) | 9 comments Started it today! I’m on chapter 3 and loving it so far!!

Eileen | 190 comments I am curious to hear what you all think about Mirabelle/May Ling's adoption.. Who's side are you on? What do you think about it? :)

Catka | 270 comments Eileen wrote: "I am curious to hear what you all think about Mirabelle/May Ling's adoption.. Who's side are you on? What do you think about it? :)"
My first reaction was to actively prevent myself from taking sides. I understand this is a helluva difficult decision to make and I am not a mother, so I felt I do not have enough information to make one. But the further the trial went and also the more we learned about Mia's story and how she become a mother, the more I leaned to the side of the parents who would be able to give the child a good chance in life in addition to love.
