That's how I feel, too! I'd forgotten how early in the book the big event happens. But the action in the end doesn't feel slow, either. I love everything in the Shire, how they have to put their new skills and courage to the test, without any of the "Big Folk" to help them. And I love the message of war effecting not only those that go off to face it, but forever effecting life at home, as well. It's something that we miss out on in the film (although for time constraints, it's totally understandable).

I felt the same way when I first read it when I was in my early twenties. I have reread it many times over the years. This trilogy is still my favorite of all time.

I read it in my early twenties too! I am glad someone else felt the same way. Certain passages were so beautiful and descriptive that rereading them or thinking of them brings a sense of awe, longing and sadness.
