Barbara (barbara114) | 13 comments Such a fantastic book!!! The movie did NOT do it justice, as good as it was....that in and of itself could have been at least a two-parter!

Janet (goodreadscomjanetj) | 77 comments Just finished the first book of "Return of the King". I loved it when (view spoiler). Tolkien puts a different spin on the qualities of strength than many other authors do.

Sneha | 5 comments A glorious glorious book! I was depressed for months wishing I lived in Middle Earth and because the ending was bittersweet and you felt the age of magic and beauty passing with the elves!

Kaycie | 11 comments I just finished it for the first time ever, and I was really surprised at how long the book kept going after "the end". It has also been a really long time since I watched the movies, but I definitely don't remember that much happening in the second half! Time for a Lord of the Rings movie marathon!!

Janet (goodreadscomjanetj) | 77 comments "I feel like spring after winter, and sun on the leaves; and like trumpets and harps and all the songs I have ever heard!" A quote from Samwise Gamgee. What a wonderful character. When I started reading the book I, like probably most, liked Aragorn best(a real hero). But if a person had Sam by their side they could not do better. What a loyal, true friend he is.

That's how I feel, too! I'd forgotten how early in the book the big event happens. But the action in the end doesn't feel slow, either. I love everything in the Shire, how they have to put their new skills and courage to the test, without any of the "Big Folk" to help them. And I love the message of war effecting not only those that go off to face it, but forever effecting life at home, as well. It's something that we miss out on in the film (although for time constraints, it's totally understandable).

I felt the same way when I first read it when I was in my early twenties. I have reread it many times over the years. This trilogy is still my favorite of all time.

I read it in my early twenties too! I am glad someone else felt the same way. Certain passages were so beautiful and descriptive that rereading them or thinking of them brings a sense of awe, longing and sadness.
