My spouse and I also really loved Senua's Sacrifice. It got a bit too "real" for me a few times, but apart from stunning graphics, it is such a heartfelt, honest look at living with mental illness. Also hello, it's mythology based so you know I couldn't stay away. Absolutely brilliant.
Love this thread! I recently finished the main campaign of The Witcher 3 (I haven’t yet played the extensive DLC) and I had heard great things about it, especially its story, and...well...I was mostly underwhelmed. Although I did appreciate the depth of its world building and believed its characters were alive and complicated. But the overall plot was just so-so. On the other hand, the storytelling in HZD is pure genius.
I haven’t been playing anything else for a while. Books have seduced me entirely. I’m not feeling like spending time killing people or creatures on a tv screen right now.
Still going through my first character in Skyrim Special Edition (heavily, heavily modded). Recently tried to adopt my 5th kid but ... I think she's gone missing! The main storyline is OK, but it's really all about my own RPing. My character's engaged to be married and has been for a while ... I have to finally get around to going through with the wedding before I start the Civil War quest line.But ... I got sidetracked by Battletech. In the past I spent a lot of time playing MechWarrior 2, 3, 4, and some of the expansion packs. And I used to play XCOM (the original game) a lot, as well as Xenonauts, an homage to that old game. So I like tactical squad-based/turn-based games. Battletech is kind of a combination of the XCOM style of play with the old MechWarrior games (using more of the rules from the Battletech table top game, and the actual 3D models from MechWarrior Online). The story is ... superfluous, but the mechanics of the game create for really satisfying tactical play, learning to modify your battlemechs' weapons, armor, heat management, and special components so they synergize with the other 'mechs in your lance, as well as putting the correctly skilled pilots in the right 'mechs. Fundamentally it's a simple game but the more you delve into it the more you realize how much deeper it is. It's kind of like baking bread: simple to come out with good results, but much more difficult to get stellar results.
I'm almost finished with the expansion of Grim Dawn.I LOVE Grim Dawn. LOVE. GD is [almost] everything I want in an RPG: Deep, deep storyline, tons of missions, tons of side missions for playablity, the ability to build the baddest badass this side of badassdom, loot.
I wish I had the ability to change races but you can be male or female. I also wish there was a physical character builder. I'd also like BETTER loot but that would be completely against the spirit of the game - Grim Dawn is set in a time and place where resources are very, very, very scarce and getting googads of really good loot would be against all of that. I also want pets. GD has pets but not pets that perform any tasks besides fighting. I want pets like in Torchlight or Van Helsing.
Those are super minor issues for me, though. And I will throw as much money at Crate as possible as long as they keep giving me the goods. ;-)
Grim Dawn is an action role-playing game intended for digital distribution on the PC. It was created by a veteran team of developers, including former members of Iron Lore entertainment, the makers of Titan Quest. Grim Dawn was built with Crate's own improved version of the Iron Lore engine and toolset; the same technology used to create Titan Quest. As a spiritual successor, Grim Dawn attempts to better perfect the magical formula of exploration, character advancement, and loot collection pioneered by Diablo.
Players are thrust into the dark, war-torn world of Cairn where a once proud empire has been brought to ruin and the human race driven to the edge of extinction. I'm currently playing through The Last of Us Remastered for the first time. I kind of suck at it (I die so many times when the Clickers are involved) and have to take lots of breaks because I psych myself out being freaked out when nothing is even happening, but I love it anyways.

Due to time problems I stopped playing quite some time ago, but my kids inherited my old PC together with the games on it, so I'm kind of playing Gothic 3 and Morrowind all over again, since ever so often there is a shout: "Ma! Help me with this quest!" - and then I sit in front of the screen again (and sometimes I'm really missing my old days)
Oooh, another Grim Dawn fan! *waves*Ever since my dad bought me the original Nintendo NES when I was a kid and I played Super Mario 3 non stop (I still do) I've loved computer and video games. The biggest thing for me is probably Diablo, which I still love. That type of game play like Diablo II, TItan Quest and Grim Dawn, the repetitive lull of quests, getting rewards, selling your stuff and upgrading your armor, is my favorite because I can shut off my brain. I find it very relaxing and it's how I wind down.
I used to play WoW type MMORPGs like Aion, then Elder Scrolls Online, Blade and Soul and Black Desert. Games with a huge world you can ride your horse through and explore while doing quests. I love them but they completely stole my time, I'd play from I came from work until I went to bed, so I stopped doing it five years ago and I stick to single player games where I'm not depending on others for time consuming raids, et cetera.
I also really, really, really love the Silent Hill games. It has amazing art and lots of atmosphere. Unfortunately, as much as I love horror in movies and books, I find it way too scary to actually play, so I watch other people play them LOL. In particular I really enjoy watching John Wolfe who plays and reviews horror, point and click, and adventure/puzzle games, games I'm either too scared or too stupid or impatient to do myself XD
Have any of you played Soma? It's a scifi survival horror game that I was very fascinated by when I saw the playthrough. The more you understand of what's going on as the story unfolds, the more... disturbing it gets. It's also really beautiful, taking place in an underwater facility.

YES! That's exactly it! Those are some of my favorite games and I feel it very relaxing. Love Diablo, D2 & D3 (D3 is great on console so I can play with hubby). Torchlight and T2 are both great and I'm waiting for them to drop T3. I also love Titan Quest - and bought the console version, too. But I stopped since the console doesn't have the new expansion and my PC edition does.
I tried Guild Wars but I don't like MMOs, just RPGs with multiplayer. I am NOT a social gamer and prefer to play just with the hubs.
I tried Van Helsing franchise. I enjoyed the first game but have been unable to get into the rest...that I already bought. My Steam account looks like my library: littered with unplayed games, lol.
I haven't tried Soma... I'll check it out. I didn't play BioShock but I watched all the play-throughs on You Tube (except I didn't finish the last one).
Soma is very interesting. Beautifully designed, atmospheric, immersive. There are some wonky mechanics in some moments but overall I would highly recommend it if you like richly imagined stories in your games. I also LOVED the BioShock games. Wow wow wow they’re incredible.

Ugh so many good games being talked about here that I haven’t played in way too long. Skyrim, Fallout, The Witcher 3 (although I can see why someone might be underwhelmed) and The Last of Us!!The Last of Us might be one of my favorite games of all time. The story is amazing and the gameplay is so much fun. There’s a second one releasing soon (next year maybe?) and I can’t wait to get my hands on it. And yes- it made me jump too- especially later in the game (no plot spoilers here just setting) (view spoiler)

Last game I personally played was Assassin’s Creed, which was fun, and Bayek is probably the character I’ve enjoyed most since Ezio.
I’ve seen Horizon Zero Dawn talked about a lot but I wasn’t sure if it was for me or not. Can you guys tell me what you love about it? Is it MMO?
I love that there's a place to discuss video games now! I stalled out on Horizon Zero Dawn. I loved the graphics and story, but I hate the battle system and the meaningless collections. I just don't want to spend 3 hours trying to sneak up on something, because I suck at sneaking in games and I've died 93 times. Then when I'm done with that, I can go collect some random coffee mugs for 6 hours!
I've got Senua's Sacrifice and the Witcher 2 and 3 in my backlog, so I will be playing them eventually, if I can stop myself from re-playing the Dragon Age and Mass Effect series for the 100th time. My problem is I keep buying games on sale, but then I have too many other things I'm doing at the time.
I'm currently going through Life is Strange, and I'm really enjoying it. I've recently started to get into the games that are more storytelling with just a few choices along the way. I did the Telltale Game of Thrones and it was great. I only play them every once in a while, but it's nice to have something different.

I do like hack and slash games with friends still. After D3 got its act together, it was fun to run through the daily quest things with friends. I still am disappointed by the boss fights though. That really killed it for me.
My husband just went back to WoW with the new expansion. I am valiantly trying to convince myself that I ABSOLUTELY do not want to start playing again. So far I'm succeeding. But there are days it's not easy. That's really the only video game I've played since NES. Unless you count match 3 games on my phone. ;) I'm planning a Bubble Bobble tattoo soon. That is my favorite video game of all time. It has little dragon monster things, so that totally counts as Fantasy, right?

My video card crapped out on my PC a couple years ago, and I built it back in 2006 so it was already long in the tooth before then, so I haven’t played any non-iPad games in quite some time.I absolutely loved the multiplayer part of Mass Effect 3, even though I completely hated the campaign. I also played the heck out of XCOM, and if (when) I build a new PC the sequel will be the first game I get.
Mostly I’m just waiting until games like Dual Universe and Ship of Heroes release before I actually build my next rig. City of Heroes is probably my all-time favorite game, but honestly it was the magnificent character creator that held my interest the most. I lost track of how many characters I made once I passed 300. As one of my fellow players said at the time of CoH being shuttered, “City of Heroes let me be Stan Lee because the game was Jack Kirby.� Even now, 14.5 years after the game’s debut and 6 years (this week) after the Koreans unceremoniously pulled the plug, no game has ever rivalled CoH’s character creator.
My favorite part of Thor: Ragnarok was the Battle on the Bifrost where Thor finally comes into his own (“Are you Thor, god of hammers?�), where Thor kicks all the ass, could have been taken directly from the Electric powerset, complete with lightning bolts striking multiple enemies. Nothing has made me miss CoH more than that movie. My Electric Brute was the fastest character to ever get to the max level, and I did it completely solo. (Although my guy wasn’t a Norse lightning god but rather a time-traveling cyborg named Future Shock. Same diff.)
BTW, if you haven’t seen Thor : Ragnarok, you’re missing out. You don’t need to have seen any of the other Marvel movies to enjoy it, aside from knowing who the Hulk and Loki are. The Bifrost scene is pure distilled awesome: It’s so good that I can’t get enough of it and I *loathe* Led Zeppelin.
Trike, City of Heroes was amazing. I only ever got a few characters to the max level because I kept making new heroes and later villains with diverse powers and backgrounds. I loved creating backstories for them.I don't have a PC that can handle modern games, but if Ship of Heroes is close to CoH, I will get one just for that. I've never built one, just added a graphic card and RAM to my old computer so I could play CoH when it first came out.
I love Thor: Ragnarok. So funny. Let’s see....video games. Super Mario (1,2,3 and 64), Donkey Kong, Lego Batman and Lego Dimensions. I haven’t played for a while but I was pretty obsessed with getting all the figures for Dimensions for a while. I have a NES, 64, GameCube, Wii and WiiU. Yeahhh a really hard core gamer here hahaha

I got a new computer since CoH was shut down, but I still have an older laptop with it installed. I'll have to break it out for some nostalgia some time.I still miss it too. Not just the game, but I met some great people there. I had a super group that started as Texas only players but grew to let in friends in other states. I had lots of fun with that great community, and I haven't found anything quite the same.

They were bought out by a free-to-play outfit a number of years ago, and were disbanded last year. Their last game, Hob, is an action-adventure thing rather than a loot crawler, but well worth checking out. YouTube videos would give you a decent, free idea of it.
I love loot crawlers, too, so will check out Grim Dawn. I think I got it on a sale some time ago and never installed it....

FFXI for me, and clean 9 years as of December this year. Just yesterday I vividly remembered one of the dungeons, a volcanic crater kind of thing, and longed to go back there. But I pretty literally lost four years to it and regret that loss, too. No more MMOs for me.
I'm more into indy and niche titles these days. My current game is Stranger of Sword City, a Japanese "Wizardry-like." There isn't much to it roleplaying-wise--instead it's about exploring an egregiously dangerous (turn-based) dungeon where the death penalty is excessively high. I love the character and enemy designs and the music. It's very pleasant to play. The translation is pretty awful, though--it wasn't done by prose stylists, let's just leave it at that.

Me and my SO just finished Dead Space 2, which was fine, and started on Divinity: Original Sin yesterday! Haven't played much, but it seems like a funny game with rich NPCs. Witcher 1, 2 and 3 must be my all time favorite games thinking of the stories, but the one game I always return to playing (except Witcher) is Path of Exiles! Really fun game mechanics, the story is great and it's a perfect multiplayer game.
I also hightly recommend Stardew Valley if you'd like a calm, but interesting game. Don't be discuraged that it's a farming game, it has so much to offer.
I also also find Doom to be the perfect stress relief.. (:P)
I'm a filthy casual but mostly these days I dabble in a few MMOs, mainly Guild Wars 2 and ESO. I occasionally play Maplestory for the nostalgia as well.
Anyone a Dark Souls fan? Currently playing Dark Souls 3. I work full-time and build furniture, as my side hustle, and I'm an aspiring novelist. So time for gameplay is limited but this game is my go-to.
The difficulty of gameplay and the gorgeous scenery keep me going back for more.
I've tried Divinity: Original Sin on console and I'm not a fan. I find the controls are complicated and I hate the split screen. Maybe I should try it without hubby but...that's the reason we have console to begin with.
I would love to find a good space opera RPG like Mass Effect that’s not made by BioWare. Shooters are fine, but I get bored by them rather quickly these days, which is why I was never tempted by Overwatch and the like.But what I really want is an RTS in the vein of WarCraft III. In terms of story, the fall of Arthas is probably one of the best “seduced by the dark side� tales I’ve seen. All of his choices to save his people and kingdom are necessary and logical, yet they still lead to his eventual corruption by the Lich King. Right up until the end I kept thinking, “He’s going to magically pull this out, right?� Nope. They go there, and he becomes evil. “The road to hell is paved with good intentions� has never rung more true.
I could never get into World of Warcraft despite my enjoyment of the RTS games. One guy I used to play with said he liked it because he could “really roleplay in it.� I’m like, dude, we just killed a giant chicken and looted its corpse to find a cold glass of milk. How the hell do you roleplay THAT? When I spent two days gathering resources and recipes and running tedious fetch quests in order to craft a new armor chestplate, only to have a superior one drop literally in my very next battle, I was done.
I thought Blizzard did a good job with seduced by the dark side with StarCraft. I only played the first one cause the bad ass bitch they turned into the bad guy was my favorite.
Also, am currently waiting for Grim Dawn to drop their new expansion so I can throw lots of money at them.

There you also don't have to deal with the splitscreen :)
I've been playing The Witcher 3 pretty heavily. Open-world games are my Kryptonite; I try focusing on the main quest and five hours later I'm in the furthest corner of the map picking herbs or beating up the local wildlife. I never did finish Skyrim's main quest because of that, despite playing something like 300 hours.Finished Horizon: Zero Dawn awhile back and absolutely loved it. The story was great and Aloy is easily one of my new favorite video game protagonists. I need a release date for the sequel already.

I don't game myself (apart from dusting off old handheld perhaps once a year for a pout of old school Mario), but have occasionally watched by as my brothers do, and found myself baffled how nonchalantly they are able to just disregard the gorgeous settings and battle/race on (with often such frustration too).
I feel I would be like you on this - wandering around places, admiring the world they've built. Discovering the hidden messages and puns in the 'sets' and 'props', wondering how much time it took to create each item and how much capacity it takes of the program to render each individual raindrop and cast shadow... such things.
I played my first game of Fortnite. No idea what I was doing. Got killed by a balloon. And rain.

I’ve never been into random competitive multiplayer. I prefer stories, or cooperative multiplayer experiences.
I played Detroit: Become Human when it first came out, and I really liked it. Then a while ago, Heavy Rain became a free game with Playstation Plus. So I started playing that when I first got it and then promptly got distracted by something else.Last night I decided to get back to it, and it's a little confusing. I had to describe someone, including what they were wearing, and I didn't remember at all so I just guessed completely. I wonder how that will work out for me later? Overall, it's pretty fun, and it's nice to get a similar style to Detroit: Become Human. I like that different actions and dialogue options can change the story. I also like that even if you are bad at some of the actions, one wrong move won't make you fail whatever you're doing. I don't mind dying in action oriented games, but when it's all about the story, I don't want to start over 20 times.
Dragon Quest XI came out a couple days ago and that's what I'm playing now. :) Since I've played a fair amount of DQ it's like wrapping up in a nice woolly blanket, just like a good comfort read. I'm looking forward to meeting the rest of this installment's cast.(ETA my avatar is a figurine based on one of the monsters from this series!)
I'm currently going through my old Pokemon games for fun: Red, Gold, Emerald, Black, Black 2, X, Moon. I've always been a big Pokemon fan. In my late teens and early 20s my love of those pocket monsters brought me into video game competitive play. I joined a league on twitter and became the ghost gym leader for 3 years (15 seasons), then was the ice gym leader for 2 years (10 seasons). Gotta play with your favorites. I was intrigued by how intense the strategy is. I think it's more strategic than chess, in all honesty. I also play Skyrim and Oblivion (which I like better) periodically. I tried Dragon Age Inquisition but the text is so small it's impossible to play which frustrates me since I love Dragon Age.
I also have a soft spot for The Battle for Middle Earth. Moving armies and fighting orcs is very fun.
I've spent most of 2018 reading versus gaming. That being said, I've set this long weekend aside to finally play my first minutes of Assassin's Creed Origins. It was a Christmas present.

I’m dredging up this old-ish post to ask if anybody out there plays any VR (Virtual Reality) games? Or am I the geekiest of the geeks? ;) I’ve recently discovered Beat Saber and I've become completely addicted to it, but I don’t know anybody who plays it.I’d also be interested in hearing what other VR games people enjoy. I’ve played a few other things, but I haven’t ventured out too much yet, and lately I can’t stop playing Beat Saber long enough to try other things. I’m mostly playing on an Oculus Quest, although I do have an older Rift and soon the Quest will also be able to tether to the PC anyway. Skyrim was the first game I tried on the Rift and that was pretty cool. I’d played the normal version on the PC quite a bit already, but it’s definitely a whole new experience when something actually comes up behind you and bites you. There was screaming and spinning and flailing, which is a problem when you have a long cord tethering you to the PC.
Due to clumsiness, I prefer being untethered. When I first discovered Beat Saber, I was still playing on the Rift and I don’t have a ton of space in my computer area. I would get very melodramatic about the oncoming barriers, especially when I first started playing, and I’d dive into my computer desk to dodge them instead of just leaning my head out of the way. So essentially I was dodging fake barriers so that I could bash myself into real barriers. Brilliant, yes? :) There have been no accidents (yet) since moving to the Quest.
On the more traditional video game front, I’ll likely do a re-re-re-re(?)-play of the very old Betrayal at Krondor PC game in the near future when I get up to the corresponding book in my Raymond E. Feist series read. That’s the game that got me into fantasy books.

There's also "Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes" which requires at least 2 people, one reading what you have to do next but unable to see what you're doing, and then the VR where you can see what you're doing but have no idea what to do.
That one is too stressful so I don't play it, but everyone else seems to have a good time blowing up.

I had tried Job Simulator and wasn’t terribly impressed. It made me chuckle a few times, but mostly I was bored with it. I’ve only played through two of the jobs so far, the office one and the restaurant one.
I was also looking for something very calm I could show my grandma and anybody else who would have trouble understanding how to operate the controllers, so I tried Nature Treks. The scenery seemed a little, I don’t know, flat looking. Like the grass and flowers on the ground looked more 2D. Also there is apparently no collision control as animals would run through trees and each other. There was one very disturbing moment where a rabbit and a deer or something were hanging out in the same area, and the deer leaned down to eat some grass, but it was right where the rabbit was so it looked like it was eating the rabbit. :) Reviews for it seemed good, so it may just be that I'm used to the more powerful stuff games can do if they're PC-tethered, like Skyrim. Nature Treks is kind of peaceful and relaxing though, and the limited graphics aren’t as obvious if you change it to nighttime. I liked turning on the rain, and the space and underwater scenes were pretty cool too. It’s not something I personally would choose to spend time in, but it might be a nice way to show VR to people who have never seen it before and would have trouble operating the controllers or doing anything too active.
Shadow Point is a game I'm interested in trying eventually also.

I won't mind if folks also talk RPGs here maybe? But if it gets overcrowded or we start spending time considerable time talking about particular campaigns/individual's characters, I'll open another thread for that.
