Which boss were you having problems with Beth?

The Joy of Erudition | 83 comments I just finished Skyrim for the first time a couple of weeks ago. By "finished", I mean I did all of the non-radiant quests I could find including the DLC, and got all the achievements.

It's kind of you to think of me, Marie, but it was over ten years ago and I can't remember. I do have the PC version with its console commands so I would have a means to fix a dead-end build (or one I stink at playing) if needed, should I play it again.

I was just going to say - sometimes the weapons in your possession for a character could be the undoing for the enemy especially bosses.

I have the Legendary edition for my PS3 and with having the legendary edition I was able to acquire a bow called Auriel's Bow which you can acquire special arrows for it. Dragon Priests including bosses cannot block that bow. I use it all the time on hard foes. :) I would think the pc version would have the same weapons. Maybe at some point in time you will return to playing Skyrim. :)

Kaa | 1535 comments I picked up God of War a couple weeks ago. I'm still in the "cranikly learning new combat mechanics" phase, but the art is great and I think I'm really going to like the story, and the gameplay once I get used to it.

I will! And make a more serious effort at Morrowind and Oblivion at some point, too. :)

Andres Rodriguez (aroddamonster) | 343 comments I'm about 15 hours into Octopath traveler and the classical rpg elements are there but each character has their own story and for traditional rpgs I feel that the majority of them are very weak, at least at this point. Perhaps i've just become spoiled with some amazing storylines that I'm expecting too much from a 16bit side scroller? Or, maybe the 8 stories will somehow begin to intertwine.

message 509: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 3126 comments Kaa let us know if you are able to get into it. I picked up GoW once (many years ago), mashed a bunch of buttons, hated it and never picked it up again. But the story is definitely something I’d like to see. Just curious if it gets any more playable at any point.

Amy (Other Amy) | 175 comments God of War is one of those games I could never get my fingers to work right. (To be fair, most combat games are!)

I feel like Squenix has been producing pretty bland stories for a while. (In fairness, I've missed some big releases; the last game I played from them was Final Fantasy XV, I think.)

message 511: by Kaa (new)

Kaa | 1535 comments @Sarah: Well, I like button mashy games, so I may not be the best judge. But I'm playing the 2018 version, which is IMO no more button mashing than any other combat-heavy RPG. I did like the original, but the gameplay in this version is very different.

I absolutely loved Mass Effect Legendary Edition! I sunk like 160 hours into it as soon as it came out!

I have been getting into Horizon Zero Dawn again, I never finished it when I started last year.
I look forward to the new one coming out this year. ^^

I don't think it's actually been announced what game it is yet. Here's the 12/20/21 statement he made on his website:

"I’ve been working on a video game for several years, and I suspect it will be announced this year. So, commence speculation! (Note: it’s not for one of my properties, but something new that I built with them. It’s a game company many of you will have heard of, but probably not the one you’re thinking about right now. Not that other one either.)"

That's the most recent information I see on it.

A brutal and addictive turn-based fantasy/lovecraftian horror game.
Totally loving it!

Andres Rodriguez (aroddamonster) | 343 comments Netflix has a choose your own adventure minecraft show. So yesterday my son begged me to get the game, hes 4, I told him not to open it in the car. When I took him out of his kid seat he plopped down and started looking for the switch cartridge. I pulled the seats out and still haven't found it... Ugh...

Anyway, I went there to buy Overcooked. We haven't played it yet but I was told that my wife and I need to play the game. Anyone familiar with it?

Sarah | 3126 comments I started Horizon Forbidden West this weekend and am loving it. It’s gorgeously rendered even though it’s technically a PS4 game, and I can already tell some of the weapons and tools they give you are going to add a lot to the experience and combat.

Amy (Other Amy) | 175 comments It is just such a beautiful game, mechanically and visually. (Maybe mechanically is not the right word; there is some clunkiness in the execution of certain elements, but I mean the way the game unfolds itself in skill progression to take you through the world is just incredibly well done.)

Horizon zero dawn was one of my all time favorite games on the PS4. The world was incredible and the story was so engrossing it forced me to keep playing lol just to finish it. I loved just roaming around and experiencing the world and its robotic inhabitants. I can't wait to play Forbidden west.

If you liked roaming around in the first one I think you'll love it here. Lots of variety, everything just feels more alive.

I'm such a sucker for gorgeous and alive worlds. I spend so much time exploring and roaming around just enjoying the world. I don't know if you ever played Zelda breath of the wild, but it too had a beautiful and alive feeling to it.

message 532: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 3126 comments Yes- BotW was a lot of fun too! Although I don’t know if I ever finished. I was playing with my daughter and she doesn’t have the same patience I do for large open world games.

I would say this feels more alive than that? I just remember HZD feeling like settlements were few and far between but here you run into random outposts/settlements quite often and it seems more populated than ever with Machines, animals, people, etc.

Beth (rosewoodpip) | 1991 comments Travis wrote: "Has anyone else joined the Wordle wagon? It's the thing I look forward to second most every morning (after coffee of course)."

I have! I usually play it on my phone right after the alarm goes off in the morning. Sometimes I don't finish it before I have to get ready for work but I have never skipped or failed yet and have a 52 streak (this may lead to my failing tomorrow. We'll see!).

On PC I've been having trouble getting into games with any narrative so instead have been continuing with "Pixel Puzzles Ultimate." I still have many, many hours left even just assembling the free puzzles. This is about the only thing I can do while also listening to an audiobook.

On the TV I started Breath of the Wild. LoZ is a franchise that I would love to love, but I continually get stuck somewhere and get fed up. So far the baby stage hasn't stumped me, but I know my relationship with these games, so I'll just enjoy it until the inevitable happens.

John | 168 comments I check in here periodically for recommendations so good to see info on Horizon Zero series as that is next in line. About 120 hours into Assassin's Creed Valhalla with DLC1 (Ireland) and 75% of the main story done. So another week or two if I do DLC2 (France) and a few more side quests.

I wait until games get to at least half off and out of beta, I mean patched, before I buy and play. So maybe Cyberpunk 2077 this summer?

message 535: by Kevin (new)

Kevin | 22 comments So I ended up caving and bought Elden Ring. Extremely excited to play it but... while I was waiting for it to patch lol, I noticed God of War staring at me and ended up starting that.

It has been absolutely amazing so far. The world is incredible to explore, the story has been fantastic, the interaction between Kratos and his son has been a joy to watch and listen to. I've been sucked into it. I don't see myself starting Elden Ring until I finish God of War.

I (started and) finished playing Carto today for the first time and OMG it's so cute! <3 All the animals! I'd list them but some of them are such amazing surprises that it makes you squee for sure ^_^ (I wish they hadn't eaten some of the animals though.)

The puzzles are pretty easy, but it was a lot of fun and did I say cute animals? :)

And today I've started Cat Quest. Yep, I'm going through all the cutesy games that start with C. Not really :D The controls (macbook, no mouse) are horrid, but the game is fun ^_^

Both Carto and Cat Quest are *so punny* !!

I don't know why I haven't played more cute games like these (and Piffle, which I mentioned earlier) before. They're so relaxing!

It really is a beautifully written relationship. Not to mention a super-addictive game.

Sarah | 3126 comments Is anyone else excited about Stray?

It's been pushed back a couple times, but it looks like it's finally coming July 19. I'm pretty excited about this one - it just looks like a fun/relaxing game you could spend a good amount of time with.

message 542: by Nicole (new)

Nicole (Nerdish.Maddog) (nerdishmaddog) | 82 comments I am super excited for stray. I have always loved when there are animals in video games and I have 3 cat housemates so I may be a bit of a fan of cats as well. Most of all I am excited for something different. I have spent too much time on Horizon (I played 1 & 2 back to back) and could use the change.

I still haven't finished Horizon 2. The map is enormous.

message 544: by Beth (new)

Beth (rosewoodpip) | 1991 comments My sister and I have been playing Wordle and Quordle for a few months now and sending our results to each other. Quordle kind of lets you know how well designed a minigame Wordle is, imo--it takes too long and is too swingy to be consistently fun.

On the "narrative game" front I've been playing Monster Sanctuary and the demo of Crystal (something) (I cannot remember the second word of this title to save my life). The former is a combination "Metroidvania" and monster collecting game a la Pokemon, the latter is a Final Fantasy V-like character and battle system with a voxel setting you jump around in to explore.

message 545: by Anna (new)

Anna (vegfic) | 10423 comments Ugh, I want Stray! But I need a PS5 first and that could take years :S I decided to skip PS4, and even though getting a PS5 is less likely than winning the lottery (especially since I don't buy lottery tickets), I've repeatedly decided to stick to this decision and wait.

The main reason I decided to skip PS4 was to take a break from gaming (I gave my PS3 to my brother), and at that point my promise to myself was that I could get back into it when we have PS5. I've regretted the specifics of that promise very much lately! :(

message 546: by Beth (new)

Beth (rosewoodpip) | 1991 comments I know it's an older machine now, but considering that--after what, two-plus years?--the supply of PS5s is still inconsistent, game developers are still making both PS4 and PS5 editions of their games. In any case, a promise is a promise and all that, but if it were me I would have conceded and picked up a PS4 long ago. :D

message 547: by Anna (new)

Anna (vegfic) | 10423 comments I know. I look at the PS4 almost every week, and have been very close to buying it so many times :D But I can be stubborn sometimes, and I already waited *years*, so what's a couple more. Also I am still worried that once I do get it, I will do nothing but game for months, so it's also a sneakily healthy choice :)

message 548: by Nicole (new)

Nicole (Nerdish.Maddog) (nerdishmaddog) | 82 comments Anna you have better will power then me. I told myself I wouldn't get a PS5 when it first came out and I would wait but I made it a whole 3 weeks before I caved and began the hunt for store drops.

message 549: by Anna (new)

Anna (vegfic) | 10423 comments I don't have the spoons for that kind of stress. There are several tracking sites, and anything that drops gets snatched immediately. I'd have to spend hours daily checking everything and it's honestly not worth it. I spend my online product stalking energy once a year (or every two years) on scoring a super cheap iPhone on Black Friday :)

I tracked mine on twitter and got it on an amazon deal about a year after release. I has no regrets.

Stray is going to be available on Steam also if you have access to a computer worthy of gaming (it's not a super large game so I don't think the requirements would be too high!)
