Who's reading this one?" I bought the kindle of Absolute Beginners as it was not very expensive and I thought it might win. So will try to get that read.

Does anyone know if you should read the first in the series before this one?

I would say that it probably is not necessary since the second book is included and not the first book. The first book is set in 1957 and is the emerging black culture in London. This one is a story of the Mod culture. I don't really think it is necessary to read the first but I haven't read it, just guessing. I am not reading the first book.

My library has this one, but none of the others in the series.

I'm just guesstimating too, but I think it's just called his London trilogy because it's three books dealing with different London subcultures in the 50s. So not really linked in terms of plot or characters, I think.

I read the book earlier in the year not realizing it was part of a series. It did not seem like I was missing anything. It is definitely a stand-alone book.

I am excited about both these choices.

I missed the voting for this month, but Absolute Beginners sounds interesting, and got four-star ratings from a couple of my GR friends, Ian and Diane. Somewhat obscure, but I find I can borrow a copy from the university library here, so I think I will give it a go.

It’s okay, you just finished up, time to take care of things on home front. How long for the broken arm to heal?

We go back in 5 weeks for x-rays. I am assuming it will be the 6-8 weeks before full activity.

I can volunteer for moderating Absolute Beginners, unless someone else is eager to- then I will bow out. I picked up a copy today from the university library here, a somewhat yellowed vintage 1959 edition. I'll start on it tomorrow or today.
I see Thriftbooks.com has 2 copies of it for less than $4 + $1 ship unless you spend $10, then free ship.
While the City and County library systems here have none of MacInnes' books, the university has ten, of which eight seem to be novels.
