Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Poll's up! I added all suggestions to a Doodle Poll where you can check all the series you'd be interested in reading.

On September 14th we'll see which one has the most interested people, and if we end up with a tie, I'll do a regular GR poll for a final decision.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

In the last year, a couple of us read the Demon Cycle (starting with The Warded Man) together. It's a series of 5 books, and we read one, had a 1-3 month break, and then read the next one. It was a great way to read a series!

It would be nice to do this again with another series. Anyone interested?

We could see who wants to join, decide on some criteria the series has to meet (like being completed, available in print, ebook and audio, etc.), come up with suggestions, and then have a poll to vote on which ones you'd like to read and go for the one with the most votes.

Possible series to read
Keep in mind: completed series (or final book to be published in 2019), available for a reasonable price in all formats)
Traitor's Blade (Greatcoats, 4 books)
The Black Prism (Lightbringer series, 5 books, 5th book expected to be published September 2019 - maybe a bit late for us?)
Blood Song (Raven's Shadow series, 3 books)
Assassin's Apprentice (Farseer Trilogy, 3 books)
The Mists of Avalon (Avalon, 7 books (or 4? have to research a bit), first one pretty chunky but rest not so bad)
The Shadow of What Was Lost (Licanius Trilogy, 3 books)
His Majesty's Dragon (Temeraire, 9 books)
The Final Empire (Mistborn, first 3 books)
The Crown Conspiracy (Riyria Revelations, 6 books)
Kushiel's Dart (Phèdre's Trilogy, 3 books)
Furies of Calderon (Codex Alera, 6 books)
Pawn of Prophecy (The Belgariad, 5 books)
The Fellowship of the Ring (Lord of the Rings, 3 books)
City of Stairs (Divine Cities series, 3 books)
The Fifth Season (Broken Earth trilogy, 3 books)
A Shadow in Summer (Long Price Quartet, 4 books)
The Dragon's Path (The Dagger and the Coin, 5 books)
Red Sister (Book of the Ancestor, 3 books)
A Darker Shade of Magic (Shades of Magic, 3 books)
Magician: Apprentice (Riftwar Saga, 4 books)
Throne of Glass (Throne of Glass, 7 books)
White Tiger (Dark Heavens, 3 books)
Steelheart (The Reckoners, 3 books)
The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (Chronicles of Narnia, 7 books)
The Iron King (The Iron Fey, 7 books)
Fablehaven (Fablehaven, 5 books)
The Queen's Poisoner (Kingfountain, 6 books)
Clockwork Angel (Infernal Devices, 3 books)
City of Bones (The Mortal Instruments, 6 books)

Saar The Book owl | 2616 comments Oh, that's very interesting! I have a bunch of fantasy - series that I still need to read :)

message 3: by Eliestal (new)

Eliestal | 255 comments Even though I fell behind and could not finish the Demon Cycle with all of you, I am interested in reading full series ^^
Looking forward to brainstorm!

message 4: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11149 comments I might join you, Peggy. I am not a fantasy reader myself, but it is great to take advantage of buddy reads to move out of my comfort zone.

Saar The Book owl | 2616 comments And maybe we can do for the most series that are complete or near completion?
The trouble with fantasy series is that they change publisher, the series just stops or the author dies.

message 6: by Peggy (last edited Sep 07, 2018 02:07AM) (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Great!

Personally, I would prefer it if it's a series that's finished (or for which the final book will be published in 2019), and that has books that have 800-900 pages max. I also think it should be available everywhere for a reasonable price, and in all formats (print, ebook, audio), so that everyone who wants to can join in whatever way they want. And perhaps not a series with an endless amount of books, so that we can finish it in 1-1.5 years and don't start on a 5-year project ;-)

But feel free to disagree or add other preferences!

message 7: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11149 comments I agree with your preferences, Peggy. I personally would like to have them available in ebook format (especially the first books, when I am still in France), and if it is available through my library, bingo! but that would just be nice. It is not an strict condition for me.

message 8: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11149 comments Peggy, are you including trilogies in the series concept? Or would you like to be a longer series?

message 9: by Eliestal (new)

Eliestal | 255 comments I agree with your preferences as well, especially for the finished (or soon-to-be finished) part.
Ebook format is a plus since the books might be big ones so it's easier to read on the go!

Saar The Book owl | 2616 comments I agree with that, Peggy.

Fiona (fiiicoooo) | 270 comments I would like to join and I would like the series to be finished :)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Sandra wrote: "Peggy, are you including trilogies in the series concept? Or would you like to be a longer series?"

Trilogies would be fine. And maybe a max of 6-7 books?

I agree that ebooks are very useful for long and chunky series, but when it's a series I think I will really enjoy I want to have the paper books so I can put them all together on my shelves at the end. I just love the way that looks!

It would be great that if when you buy paper books, you would get the e-version for free :D

message 13: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11149 comments Peggy wrote: "Trilogies would be fine. And maybe a max of 6-7 books?"

Ok, that gives us more options, since many of the fantasy series come as trilogies. Keep the project for a longer time would be also nice, though.

Saar The Book owl | 2616 comments The biggest serie I have is finished and has 10 books :p

I agree that it would be nice to do it for a longer time. I think if it's a very simple series with 250-page books you might as well read them yourself, and would not be very suitable for this project. It wouldn't be fun to finish within a month.

But there are also trilogies that have more complex worlds and 500+ page books, and I think those would work for this. And if we enjoy it we can do it again and again and alternate between shorter and longer series.

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Saar wrote: "The biggest serie I have is finished and has 10 books :p"

Impressive! Which one was that? I think my biggest finished series is Harry Potter.

Now realizing I kind of started the series with you guys and now you've fintand I still haven't read final book. I'm a big fat #loser

message 19: by Margo (last edited Sep 07, 2018 03:24AM) (new)

Margo | 11523 comments How about Traitor's Blade , Greatcoats series. The first book is only 380 pages but the rest are 600 pages. It was highly recommended by a friend who is a fantasy buff. I have to admit a vested interest in this one as I bought the whole series in a deal lol

Edit: there are 4 books in the series

message 20: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I never heard of that one before Margo, but added it to my wishlist.

message 21: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11523 comments My first thought was Sanderson but it doesn't look like he has actually finished anything. We could look at Robin Hobbs (one of my favorite long, long writers) or Michael Sullivan. Scouring my brains for writers of long books :-\

Robin Hobbs realm of the Elderlings series is great. 16 books in all but nicely divided into subseries. I read The Farseer Trilogy year ago but wouldn't mind a reread.

message 22: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Sanderson finished part of the Mistborn series. There's a trilogy, and then there are 4 more books (1 still needs to be published) that are set in the same world but centuries later. I think the first 3 books could be considered as 'finished'.

If anyone who has suggestions just names them here, I'll make a list in the first post. In a week or so (or sooner if we have a lot of options very quickly) we can set up a poll where everyone can vote on all the series they would be willing to read and hopefully there's one we're all interested in.

message 23: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I was also thinking about Robin Hobb. Do you know if there's one subseries in particular that is best to start with?

Saar The Book owl | 2616 comments Peggy wrote: "Saar wrote: "The biggest serie I have is finished and has 10 books :p"

The Malazan - series of Steven Erikson :)

I think you start best with Assassin's Apprentice. That's the first book of the Farseer - trilogy. On my other Fantasy BR - group we have a list of which order to follow. The first book is really good, if you can lay Fitz' selfpitiness aside you. I've started the 2nd one, but not finished yet.

message 26: by Peggy (last edited Sep 07, 2018 04:39AM) (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Some that I have on my wishlist and would fit:
The Black Prism (Lightbringer series, 5 books, 5th book expected to be published September 2019 - maybe a bit late for us?)
Blood Song (Raven's Shadow series, 3 books)
Assassin's Apprentice (Farseer Trilogy, 3 books)
Ship of Magic (Liveship Traders, 3 books)
The Mists of Avalon (Avalon, 7 books (or 4? have to research a bit), first one pretty chunky but rest not so bad)

Saar The Book owl | 2616 comments And the 'Wheel of time' - series by Robert Jordan :)

I have the first book on my TBR, but I think it might be a bit too ambitious for us ;-)

Esther (nyctale) | 5174 comments Do not forget that we had buddy reads for the The Kingkiller Chronicle. We buddy read the 2 books so far out in this series.

So you can add this to the list. the 3rd may come out eventually...

message 31: by Esther (new)

Esther (nyctale) | 5174 comments also, Brett will have a new series in the same universe as the Demon cycle. We could pick that one up as well. Read them as they come out.

Saar The Book owl | 2616 comments @Peggy: no problem.
@Esther: The Kingkiller - trilogy can be an option? I'm currently reading the first one.

Kingkiller is a great series, but people have been waiting for years on the third book. Several times in the past years there has been a new publication data, but it was always retracted. Personally I have lost faith and don't think the third book will ever be published :(

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19188 comments Depending on the series, I could be in. It's too cold to look at the bookshelves now (shhhh... don't you judge me). I'll look in the morning for any options I have.

P.S. You'll have to let me know what you think of book 5. Lexx loved the series but was disappointed with the last book, so stopped paying attention.

Nice list! If there are any of the ones you think are complete that are indeed complete and that you would like to be added to the first post, let me know :)

message 42: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18547 comments I'm in, depending on the series.

Would love to read the Dune series. I did try before with a buddy read but there wasn't much interest then and it fell apart.

I also have Traitor's Blade, Blood Song, and The Black Prism which have already been mentioned.

Also, I'd be interested in the Codex Alera series starting with Furies of Calderon, the Belgariad series starting with Pawn of Prophecy, The Lord of the Rings starting with The Fellowship of the Ring, the Divine Cities trilogy starting with City of Stairs, the Broken Earth trilogy starting with The Fifth Season, The Long Price quartet starting with A Shadow in Summer (all books are being released in one volume soon), the Dagger and the Coin series starting with The Dragon's Path, Book of the Ancestor series (think it will be complete with the 3rd book but not 100%) starting with Red Sister, Shades of magic trilogy starting with A Darker Shade of Magic, RIftwar saga starting with Magician: Apprentice, and Farseer Trilogy (although I've read book 1 Assassin's Apprentice already).

I'd also love to do the Wheel of Time series and Malazan at some point but I think they are pretty big commitments.

I think it might be tricky to agree on one. Some people may have started some of the series or even completed them or not be interested in one. It might be that we end up with a couple series running as buddy reads if there is enough interest.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19188 comments OOo The Broken Earth series has just won the past three years of Hugos in a row. That's a good idea, and one I don't think many of us have started already.

Also have the Shades of Magic.

That was what I was thinking. A more recent series with good star ratings and award won for. More likely to be good and that we'll all stick with it. Potentially. And yes, I don't think many of us have read that one.

message 47: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18547 comments A Darker Shade of Magic and City of Stairs also seem to be under read in this group.

I'd be very interested in Broken Earth too. I don't know why I forgot it in my list.

Lol Rus, curious to see what you come back with.

I think I am up to try any of title proposed for now so this is a good sign!
