Reading a full fantasy series together

Looking forward to brainstorm!

The trouble with fantasy series is that they change publisher, the series just stops or the author dies.

Personally, I would prefer it if it's a series that's finished (or for which the final book will be published in 2019), and that has books that have 800-900 pages max. I also think it should be available everywhere for a reasonable price, and in all formats (print, ebook, audio), so that everyone who wants to can join in whatever way they want. And perhaps not a series with an endless amount of books, so that we can finish it in 1-1.5 years and don't start on a 5-year project ;-)
But feel free to disagree or add other preferences!

Ebook format is a plus since the books might be big ones so it's easier to read on the go!

Trilogies would be fine. And maybe a max of 6-7 books?
I agree that ebooks are very useful for long and chunky series, but when it's a series I think I will really enjoy I want to have the paper books so I can put them all together on my shelves at the end. I just love the way that looks!
It would be great that if when you buy paper books, you would get the e-version for free :D

Ok, that gives us more options, since many of the fantasy series come as trilogies. Keep the project for a longer time would be also nice, though.

I agree that it would be nice to do it for a longer time. I think if it's a very simple series with 250-page books you might as well read them yourself, and would not be very suitable for this project. It wouldn't be fun to finish within a month.
But there are also trilogies that have more complex worlds and 500+ page books, and I think those would work for this. And if we enjoy it we can do it again and again and alternate between shorter and longer series.

Impressive! Which one was that? I think my biggest finished series is Harry Potter.

Great that you will join us! Feel free to jump in with suggestions :)

Now realizing I kind of started the series with you guys and now you've fintand I still haven't read final book. I'm a big fat #loser

Edit: there are 4 books in the series

Robin Hobbs realm of the Elderlings series is great. 16 books in all but nicely divided into subseries. I read The Farseer Trilogy year ago but wouldn't mind a reread.

If anyone who has suggestions just names them here, I'll make a list in the first post. In a week or so (or sooner if we have a lot of options very quickly) we can set up a poll where everyone can vote on all the series they would be willing to read and hopefully there's one we're all interested in.

The Malazan - series of Steven Erikson :)

I think you start best with Assassin's Apprentice. That's the first book of the Farseer - trilogy. On my other Fantasy BR - group we have a list of which order to follow. The first book is really good, if you can lay Fitz' selfpitiness aside you. I've started the 2nd one, but not finished yet.

The Black Prism (Lightbringer series, 5 books, 5th book expected to be published September 2019 - maybe a bit late for us?)
Blood Song (Raven's Shadow series, 3 books)
Assassin's Apprentice (Farseer Trilogy, 3 books)
Ship of Magic (Liveship Traders, 3 books)
The Mists of Avalon (Avalon, 7 books (or 4? have to research a bit), first one pretty chunky but rest not so bad)

I have the first book on my TBR, but I think it might be a bit too ambitious for us ;-)

Thanks!

So you can add this to the list. the 3rd may come out eventually...

Kingkiller is a great series, but people have been waiting for years on the third book. Several times in the past years there has been a new publication data, but it was always retracted. Personally I have lost faith and don't think the third book will ever be published :(

Lol I love the optimism :P

P.S. You'll have to let me know what you think of book 5. Lexx loved the series but was disappointed with the last book, so stopped paying attention.

- Dune Series | 8 books | ~500p per | 10 max
- The Passage Series | 3 books | ~700p per | 12 max
- Phèdre's Trilogy | 3 books | ~800p per | 18 max
- Oxford Time Travel Series | 4 books | ~550p per | 12,68 max

Also at work! We'll just say it's break time, plus it's Friday so it's alright ;)

Nice list! If there are any of the ones you think are complete that are indeed complete and that you would like to be added to the first post, let me know :)

Would love to read the Dune series. I did try before with a buddy read but there wasn't much interest then and it fell apart.
I also have Traitor's Blade, Blood Song, and The Black Prism which have already been mentioned.
Also, I'd be interested in the Codex Alera series starting with Furies of Calderon, the Belgariad series starting with Pawn of Prophecy, The Lord of the Rings starting with The Fellowship of the Ring, the Divine Cities trilogy starting with City of Stairs, the Broken Earth trilogy starting with The Fifth Season, The Long Price quartet starting with A Shadow in Summer (all books are being released in one volume soon), the Dagger and the Coin series starting with The Dragon's Path, Book of the Ancestor series (think it will be complete with the 3rd book but not 100%) starting with Red Sister, Shades of magic trilogy starting with A Darker Shade of Magic, RIftwar saga starting with Magician: Apprentice, and Farseer Trilogy (although I've read book 1 Assassin's Apprentice already).
I'd also love to do the Wheel of Time series and Malazan at some point but I think they are pretty big commitments.
I think it might be tricky to agree on one. Some people may have started some of the series or even completed them or not be interested in one. It might be that we end up with a couple series running as buddy reads if there is enough interest.

Also have the Shades of Magic.

That was what I was thinking. A more recent series with good star ratings and award won for. More likely to be good and that we'll all stick with it. Potentially. And yes, I don't think many of us have read that one.

Also have the Shades of Magic."
I'd be very interested in Broken Earth too. I don't know why I forgot it in my list.
Lol Rus, curious to see what you come back with.

On September 14th we'll see which one has the most interested people, and if we end up with a tie, I'll do a regular GR poll for a final decision.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
In the last year, a couple of us read the Demon Cycle (starting with The Warded Man) together. It's a series of 5 books, and we read one, had a 1-3 month break, and then read the next one. It was a great way to read a series!
It would be nice to do this again with another series. Anyone interested?
We could see who wants to join, decide on some criteria the series has to meet (like being completed, available in print, ebook and audio, etc.), come up with suggestions, and then have a poll to vote on which ones you'd like to read and go for the one with the most votes.
