E.T. | 549 comments Hello. Me and Girish will be reading "The Redeemer" which is the 6th book in the Harry Hole series by Jo Nesbo today.
If you are a Nesbo fan, do join in. I think this book can be read, even if you havent read some/all of the previous Harry Hole books.

Another Harry Hole mystery! I am not sure how cozy it can be since most of the books are real page turners.

Will be starting today. And anyone interested can join in!

E.T. | 549 comments Read the 2nd Chapter thrice just to make sure I did not miss anything.

Reached mid of chapter 7. The deduction in the suicide case was good. The other thread, I am patiently waiting..

E.T. | 549 comments I too am on Chapter 8. Liked the suicide case. Would make a good short story.
I dont know why I am so wary of Nesbo. Reading slowly.

E.T. | 549 comments Done with Chapter 11 :-
1991 - A rape in Norway and the Yugoslavian war
2003 - The guy involved in the Y war kills some1 involved with the rape.
Beate and Harry disagree about the photos. There is another twist which I am not disclosing. Nesbo is definitely not short of tricks. As Kareena Kapoor said in "Jab We Met"
"Babaji ab is raat mein aur koi excitement mat dena..."
Please dont add more threads and mess it up. Seems to be going perfectly well :)

Haha! in chapter 10 where the murder has just happened..

And I agree - Jo nesbo almost always tries to pull a rabbit out of the hat (followed by a giraffee and a rhinoceros) in the early parts of the book..

E.T. | 549 comments @80% - Not as good as the Redbreast, but should be 4+/5. The first half was much more baffling and engaging, by comparison the second half is just a little stretched.

Oh wow! I am Still around 40%. Slowed down around the part into the back story of Jon's promiscuous companion..
Glad you loved it!

E.T. | 549 comments Done. I think you will enjoy it too. Would u want to continue with BR for Snowman (#7) ? It is Nesbo’s most popular books going by ŷ ratings.

I will need another day or two before I can be done with this one. I would want to start Snowman, but I don't have a copy with me. Earliest I can start is next weekend.

You can carry on since you have already got the copy..

Had a busy weekend where I couldn't be seen with a physical book. The suspense killing me, I had to continue with an audiobook (of a different book) smiling at guests, sometimes pretending like I was on a con-call..

Anyways at 65%. The Hotel International link seemed too opportune to my liking. Most of the other revelations were more plausible.

Finished! Loved it. Glad to know no disappointments.

If I were to nitpick:
- Did find the side story around Ragnihild slightly over the top. Even her husband angle was a bit needlessly creepy.
- Begs why for Halvorsen and Beate track.

A convincing read. Let me try to get the Snowman Kindle version and we can start.

message 18: by E.T. (new) - rated it 4 stars

E.T. | 549 comments Also why needlessly drag Moller’s name into the mud ? But maybe he plans to use these in later novels.
BTW, I have started with “Occupation - a Norwegian show on Netflix which is “based on an idea by Nesbo.

I have heard about the series. In my long list of series to watch.
There are two standalone books of Jo Nesbo - Macbeth and The Son both of which are mouth watering. Will pick it up sometime in between.

message 23: by E.T. (new) - rated it 4 stars

E.T. | 549 comments Done with Chapter 6. I wish the chapters were smaller in this series. Makes for easier reading. Also, as usual, the first 100 pages are slow reading as I trying to figure things out.

message 24: by Girish, The Good cop (new) - rated it 3 stars

Girish (kaapipaste) | 2837 comments Mod
In chapter 4.. maybe it's since I just finished one at a breakneck pace, the early chapters I'm finding a bit tedious.. The mountain top murder for example - the story of the policeman was so slow I paused twice..

Hope it picks up pace.

message 25: by E.T. (new) - rated it 4 stars

E.T. | 549 comments Done with chapter 11. Approx 1/3rd of the book read and its picked up a little. Am a little surprised that this is again on a serial killer after “the devil’s star.

message 26: by Girish, The Good cop (new) - rated it 3 stars

Girish (kaapipaste) | 2837 comments Mod
Finished chapter 11 and I understand what you mean. I liked the crying wolf reference to serial killer.

Also knowing the profile of the murder victims, I am worried for Harry. It seems very worrying to in Harry's circle..

Same here.. Around 60% and somehow did not get swayed by the earlier attempted distractions.
Reading them back to back, you are more aware of the tricks the author uses maybe?

Me too. though I might venture into some of his non-Harry Hole books.. I've heard from friends on GR they are pretty good too!

I have read mysteries lacking one genuine twist, one good red herring. And here is Nesbo with a problem of plenty. Actually, a problem. Still, an enjoyable read in the second half.

message 36: by E.T. (new) - rated it 4 stars

E.T. | 549 comments Done. A good read and 3.5/5 for me. Would love to read your thoughts when you finish. Especially on the final "Snowman".

Oh great! Will try to complete it tonight. Since you have completed the nagging question since I read it is the tip off about the poison and the batch mate.. which is why I said I am worried for Harry.. but the pest control also didn't make sense(rooting for this)

Hope this book doesn't end

message 38: by Girish, The Good cop (new) - rated it 3 stars

*Doesn't end bad for Harry.. I like him sober and at the helm of things

message 39: by E.T. (new) - rated it 4 stars

E.T. | 549 comments The pest control thing will provide a clue. There was a similar use of a seemigly unrelated event in his earlier books too which I cant recall right now.

Finished. Didn't like it as much. I almost saw through most of the red herrings. I could not forgive how he couldn't make the connection immediately after they disproved the suicide angle! And Pest control, I am guessing has a role to play in his next book.

Ankit Agrawal | 35 comments Hi guys - Arvind & Girish, it's get to see you guys talk about Jo Nesbo

I am a big Stieg Larsson fan and hence Jo Nesbo is my TBR for a long time. I just have one question for you guys. I am planning to read the Harry Hole series so will you recommend to read it in order or it can be read randomly?

message 42: by E.T. (new) - rated it 4 stars

E.T. | 549 comments Book #1 was bad and I think you can start with Book #3 (Redbreast) which for me was the best. There is one sub-plot which continues in #4 and ends in #5 so those 3 books have to be read in order.

So books 1 & 2 can be skipped altogether or do they have to be read later?

Girish has read both and can comment better.
BTW, Girish are you in the mood to resume with #8 (Leopard) ?

Hi Ankit, Jo Nesbo is a lot of fun. To start the series book 1 and 2 can be skipped. #2 is a better outing than 1. Hope you like it.

Sure Arvind! We can do Leopard from next week?
