description

The winner of the game will be whoever has collected the most stamps in their passport. The game will end once all of the stamps are collected or whenever the players decide to end it. There is no time restriction on this game.

Monopoly Rules
One person volunteers to track which cities' stamps have been collected.
Each player starts at GO, moving around the board clockwise.
You do not need to wait for the other player(s) to finish reading before you take your next turn. As soon as you're done reading, go ahead and roll.
All books must be 150 pages, except the 'Just Visiting' requirement.
When you land on a city, read 1 book (or the 2 optional books) to get the passport stamp.
If you land on a city whose passport stamp has already been collected, read 1 book related to that space.
When you roll, post your starting spot, the roll, and your new spot on the board.
When you finish your book, post the spot you're on, book name, rating, when it was finished, and a short review of the book. If you were supposed to read a book that had a specific element, mention that in the review.

'Chance' and 'Here & Now' If you land on one of those spots, roll the dice a second time, “pull the corresponding card, and then do whatever the card says.

2. Get an upgrade - move to the nearest Airport
3. You were framed! - go to Jail

To be 'set' in a country, the main character needs to be there for at least 1/3 of the book. Because it might be difficult to find a book set in some of these countries,

I rolled an 7
Landed on: First Class - read any book set in a different country than your own

Oh good. An easy one to start the game with. But I won't get a city's stamp from it.

I'm going to read The Orchid Affair, which is set in France.

I finished reading The Orchid Affair. What I like about the author of this series is her varying styles of writing. You never know if the book you're reading will be straight forward, whimsical or serious. And she somehow is able to pull off each style well.

The Orchid Affair is one of her more serious stories. It is well thought out, and the historical details are integrated cleverly. In other words, you don't realize you're getting a history lesson. Overall, this book is a good addition to the series.

Start: First Class
I rolled an 8
Landed on: Here & Now
Rolled again. I got 5: Take a helicopter tour - move to the nearest First Class spot

*sigh* I'll find another book set in a different country than my own. Again.
I'm going to read Hickory Dickory Dock by Agatha Christie.

Chava | 111 comments I finished Cry, the Beloved Country, what an emotional story. The language of this book is so rich, it transported me to the hot plains of Africa, I could feel the dust, and felt incredibly uncomfortable about the Apartheid in the book.

Start: Cape Town
Rolled: 6+5=11
Landed: London - read a book set in England
Reading: Cross Her Heart

message 14: by Chava (new)

Chava | 111 comments Finished Cross Her Heart. I feel a bit mixed about this book. There were some lovely twists and turns but in the end I was left feeling quite unsatisfied with the ending. It's set in England.

Start: London
Rolled: 3+2=5
Landed: Belfast - read a book set in Ireland
Reading: The Many

message 15: by Chava (last edited Oct 03, 2018 02:18AM) (new)

Chava | 111 comments Finished The Many. This was luckily a quick read. The characters were lovely enough and there's something about Ireland that just speaks to me despite never having been there. Maybe it's the accent. This is a bit of a tragic story, but in the end it just couldn't capture my attention long enough. Lucky I was able to put it on double speed for the audiobook, LOL

Start: Belfast
Rolled: 1+4=5
Landed: Warsaw - read a book set in Poland

Sigh, I think that will be some kind of WWII book then...see what I can find
EDIT: I'll re-read The Pianist: The Extraordinary Story of One Man's Survival in Warsaw, 193945

Chava | 111 comments Finished The Pianist: The Extraordinary Story of One Man's Survival in Warsaw, 193945 for Poland. I think it's sad that I only think of WW2 when I think of Poland... This was a re-read so it was a bit quicker. I still get shivers down my spine reading this, despite knowing the details in the book and of that period.

Start: Poland/Warsaw

I finished reading Hickory Dickory Dock. You can never go wrong with an Agatha Christie story. This story had a lot of red herrings. I think the author takes advantage of the fact that the reader will believe what the character says in the book. Not fair :)

Start : First Class
I rolled a 9
Landed on Santiago

I'm going to read See Before You Die: Patagonia. The main character goes to Chile to write a travel article.

I finished reading See Before You Die: Patagonia. The author did a wonderful job writing this story. It has adventure, silliness, a potential love interest, self awareness, and some beautiful prose. Too bad the books are not available any more. I wish I could have bought books 3 and 4.

Started on Santiago.
I rolled a 4
Landed in Jail. I need to read a book with a serious crime in it. I'll be back with my selection.

I read The Leper of Saint Giles to get out of Jail. The serious crime was the murder of a main character. The author does a great job of making you feel like you're in a medieval story. She uses the right verbiage, social customs, and historic events.

Started on: Jail
Rolled an 8
Landed on: Moscow

You've already collected the passport stamp for that city, so I only have to read 1 book. I'll be back with my selection.

message 25: by Chava (new)

Chava | 111 comments I finished Crazy House by James Patterson for my Go stop. I didn't know going into it that it was dystopian and futuristic, not usually my thing. However I really enjoyed the pace of this (audio)book. It did remind me a bit of the Hunger games but it's not in the league of Hunger Games

Started: Go
Rolled: 5 + 5=10
Landed on: Just Visiting Read a novella with at least 50 pages
Read: Hell Island

message 26: by Chava (new)

Chava | 111 comments I finished Hell Island by Matthew Reilly for Just visiting read a novella (this is 120 pages). I enjoy the pace of this book, but the story line is just so incredibly unbelievable with apes infected with an illness and they kill people because of it. Not my kind of book, I read it for another challenge and it fits here too. I had literally just finished it :)

Started: Just visiting
Rolled: 6+4=10
Landed on: Free Parking Read any book with 150 pages or more
I'll find a book to read over the weekend that fits that.

Thanks for keeping up with the stamps by the way. Enjoy your weekend!!

Chava | 111 comments finished The Trial by James Patterson. This book makes me want to read more in the series. I really enjoyed the 4 friends from different backgrounds and employments who solve murders together over food and drinks. It is a really quick easy read, which was nice.

Started: Free parking
Rolled: 4+4=8

I finished reading Artemis Fowl. I've read it before and really enjoyed it. I think that's a sign of a good story: when you don't mind re-reading a book. I need to finish the series one of these days!

Started on: First Class
Rolled a 9
Landed on: Hong Kong

I will go for the optional task for this city and read 2 standalone books.
1. Soar by Joan Bauer 10/16/18 **** Joan Bauer is one of my favorite authors. And I acknowledge that even excellent writers cannot produce marvelous works every time. But this story was awesome. I can't praise it high enough.

2. The Lady's Ghost by Colleen Ladd 10/17/18 ** The story was entertaining enough. I certainly felt sympathy for the main character and the struggles she tried to overcome. I wish the author had left out the sexy scenes though. They weren't really necessary.

I've finished my two books for Hong Kong. I read Soar and The Lady's Ghost. Reviews for the stories are above.

I have my 2nd passport stamp!

Started on: Hong Kong
rolled an 11
Landed on: (your) Cape Town

I'll most likely read the optional task - read a book where the main character moves to a new place. I'll be back with my choice.

message 31: by Chava (new)

Chava | 111 comments Finished Snap. This book is set in England so fits the description of "set in a country other than your own". This book had me hooked from the start. There's abductions, murder, break ins, all the gory stuff I like with lots of twists and turns. It was one of the few books I took to work so Ic ould read in my lunch breaks :).

Started: Free parking
Rolled: 3+2=5
Landed: Here and Now
Rolled: 1+2=3 --> 3. You have travel insurance - read a book where the main character is in an accident

I'll be back with a book choice

This one's easy for me :) I can definitely read a book set in the United States.

message 33: by Chava (new)

Chava | 111 comments I finished Blood Sport for read a book where the main character is in an accident. Loads of accidents in this book, too many to count. I didn't enjoy this book, but I had to read it for another challenge. This book is about the horse racing industry and oh boy it was soooo boring. The narrator wasn't great either, so that didn't help.

Started:: Here and Now
Rolled: 1+4=5
Landed: Jail To get out of jail, read a book with a serious crime in it

Reading: Promises of Blood

I finished my book for New York. I read Almost. It is set in Colorado. The story is about a 17-year-old girl who was almost raped when she was 14-years-old, and how she struggled to deal with the resultant Rape Related PTSD.

Started on: New York
rolled an 10
Landed on: Belfast

You've already collected the passport stamp for this city, so I just need to read a book set in Ireland or a book where the main character travels by ship/boat.

I'm off to look through by books.

message 35: by Chava (new)

Chava | 111 comments Finished Promises of Blood. I like myself a good thriller and this one was okay. An attorney has been asked by a rich due to give money to 10 random people from the phone book, but then it turns out that these 10 aren't that random at all and that the rich guy who died was a really really bad guy. Kept me guessing for a bit, which I do like.

Started on: Jail

Started on: Belfast

Chava | 111 comments Finished Alone by Loren D. Estleman. Apparently, this is a well-known author, but I had never heard of them. I felt this book was trying to be funny and it was trying way too hard. It wasn't funny, it was daggy. I didn't like it so much but had to get a grey cover for another challenge so I persevered.

Started on: Here & now - First class
Rolled: 4+4 = 8
Landed on: Giethoorn
Task: read a book set in The Netherlands -or-
read 2 books with legs on the cover

Chava | 111 comments I finished The Trauma Cleaner: One Woman's Extraordinary Life in the Business of Death, Decay, and Disaster for my "book set in Australia". The book is a non-fiction, a genre I don't usually attempt. However this kept me hooked. The person it's about, Sandra Pankhurst, was born a male and transitioned to female in her 20s. She has had such a varied life so far, she's in her 60s now. She's been father & husband, wife, funeral director, prostitute and now she has a cleaning business. The cleaning business deals with suicide & murder scenes, to death and decay in more natural circumstances and the dealings with hoarders and other people with mental illness. It was like a car crash, you just can't look away. I loved it.

Started on: Sydney
Rolled: 6+1= 7
Landed on: Moscow - set in Russia or book set north of where I live.

This city is already taken. I'll go with option 2- read a book set north of where you live (which is pretty much anywhere in the world when you are in Australia!)

I read two books set on an island to get the passport stamp for Taipei. Both of them happen in England.

The first book was London Calling. I enjoyed the story, but the author didn't keep true to social expectations back then. The girl kept going places without a chaperone. She would have been ruined if anyone found out.

The second book was The Mischief of the Mistletoe. I really like the Pink Carnation stories. I'm amazed at how the author was able to write in different styles according to the main character. Some have been serious, and others funny. All good books.

I read Window for Just Visiting - Read a novella with at least 50 pages. Window has 92 pages. It's a cute story about a teenage girl. The front window of her house shows her things that might or could happen. The cute boy across the street is in danger of having an accident. She'll need to convince him to be careful, and not look insane in the process :)
