Hi everyone, sorry for the late post. Fighting off a cold and I have sick brain, forgot to do it!

This week I finished:

iZombie, Vol. 4: Repossession - this finishes off the series. It was fine, I still prefer the show.

Home - this really felt like it shouldn't have been a stand alone book, even though I enjoyed it.

The Night Masquerade - had to read this because Home ended so abruptly I needed to know what happened. Overall I really feel like the story would have been stronger if she'd published all three as one novel, instead of three novellas. I still enjoyed them all, but I felt like parts got rushed from being so short, and like I mentioned, Home doesn't feel like it stands on it's own, at all.

Hungry for You - just wanted a quick no-brain read

currently reading:

The Shadow of the Wind - A local brewery runs a books & brew book club, but with the reading challenges I couldn't fit their previous selections in and didn't feel like putting the challenges behind to read them. Now I'm caught up so I'm reading the book for November I think. It's good so far, but I'm taking a break due to being sick.

Moon Called - still listening to this while I craft, it's another re-read as an audio book

The Night Circus - Inktober is coming up, I think I might do a night circus theme, so re-reading it for comfort and inspiration.

The Best Paranormal Crime Stories Ever Told - reading a story here and there for this one, good so far.

QOTW: Do you read more or less when you're sick?

I still read when I'm sick, but I tend to put down whatever I'm reading and crawl into a re-read of a favorite. Both as comfort, and so I don't have to think too hard about it, or if I fall asleep while reading or can't concentrate, it's not a big deal.

Daniele Powell (danielepowell) | 183 comments I just finished the Popsugar challenge!

One of my last two prompts was Nordic Noir, for which I read The Son. It was my first Jo Nesbø, and I found the style fast-paced, engaging, and pretty enjoyable overall.

The other was a book about or involving a sport. I have a few wrestling books and running books in my TBR pile, but I went with the quick and easy Quidditch Through the Ages.

I think I'm going to focus on finishing ATY prompts next. I'm currently at 46/52 after finishing Mr. Mercedes for the Edgar Award winner prompt.

I might knock out the Modern Mrs. Darcy challenge if I can find a librarian or indie bookseller to recommend something fun.

And if I get through all of that, I can tackle the remaining prompts from Book Riot, although I did finish off IQ, which fits as a mystery written by a POC or LGBTQ+ author, and The Road, which was an Oprah Book Club selection.

QOTW: I'm fond of sleep as a healing tool, especially since being sick often triggers migraines for me. Not very conducive to reading. I am far more likely to re-watch old movies where it doesn't matter if I lapse into a coma midway.

The only book I'm reading this week is The Rise and Fall of Alexandria: Birthplace of the Modern Mind. It is really slow going. The book is very dense, almost like a history textbook but with nothing to break up the text. Part of the problem is that reading this before bed, I often get sleepy pretty quickly reading this. I'm going to continue to get through it for now. It may become a DNF if I run out of library renewals. It was recommended by a former colleague and I like non-fiction and history usually. But this will be a challenge I think. Maybe it will pick up as it gets further in.

I have not listened to any audiobook this week because my walking partner/neighbor has been in town this week. And I've been catching up on magazines when not wanting to read ancient history.

QOTW: When I just get a cold, not much changes but I often fall asleep sooner when reading before bed. I rarely get the "knock you off your feet" kinds of sickness.

Guess what? I FINISHED Moby-Dick or, The Whale!! To say I'm happy to be done with this read is an understatement. It took almost 5 weeks. Geesh. Glad I read it, but also glad it's done. Also, spoiler alert, all the action happens in the last 30 pages. Couldn't you space it out a bit more, Mellville? You had almost 600 pages to work with!

I'm not currently reading anything right now, but I have Gone Girl for my book with alliteration in the title on my eReader to start when I'm up to it. I feel like I need a bit of a brain break, and I've had a lot of projects on the go lately. I'm also been quite sick, which, getting back to Sheri's question, I feel like I intend to read more when I'm sick, but I'm also much more likely to fall asleep after a few pages, so I don't actually end up reading more.

Daniele Powell (danielepowell) | 183 comments Congratulations Stephanie! I made it through Moby-Dick or, The Whale earlier this year. Isn't that feeling of turning the last page wonderful? I usually turn to a brain-candy page-turner after a tough slog, but I can totally understand taking a break too. Well done!
