To quote author Edwin Black again, he says eugenics was the racist pseudoscience determined to wipe away all human beings deemed ‘unfit,� preserving only those who conformed to a Nordic stereotype. “Elements of the philosophy were enshrined as national policy by forced sterilization and segregation laws, as well as marriage restrictions, enacted in 27 states (of America)…The grand plan was to literally wipe away the reproductive capability of those deemed weak and inferior.�

Apparently, gas chambers were suggested, on the record, as the final solution for dealing with the unfit!

Don't let's be beastly to the Germans--
Now our victory is ultimately won,
Let us treat them very kindly
As we would a valued friend;
(We might send them out some bishops
As a form of lease and lend?)
It was just those nasty Nazis who persuaded them to fight
And their Beethoven and their Bach --are really far worse than their bite!

Let us be meek to them,
And 'turn the other cheek' to them,
And try to arouse their latent 'sense-of-fun'
Let's give them full 'air parity'
And treat these rats with charity
But don't let's be beastly to the Hun

Don't let's be beastly to the Germans,
When the age of peace and plenty has begun...

-- and everything they need

This is the moment when we ought to 'sing their praises'.

Let's be free with them,
Let's share the BBC with them
We mustn't prevent them basking-in-the-sun

While one can say all sorts of things about Noel Coward's poetic rant, I would argue that the Americans more or less got the occupation policy right. Germany is now prosperous, and it is not war-like.

The Nazi Connection: Eugenics, American Racism, and German National Socialism

Humans have been informally (and sometimes formally) practicing eugenics for the entire history of Homo sapiens as a social species, going back to our primate ancestors. It is called "social selection", and it is what produced the species we are today. But it was mainly a market process. The more fit got the best mates, by more or less mutual consent. That is why people today are generally more intelligent, better looking, healthier, and taller, than people of, say 500 years ago. This evolution is proceeding much faster than most people think.

But it is not rulers deciding who is unfit. It is about people deciding among themselves who is unfit, and choosing mates accordingly. When we get genetic engineering, people will use it to have more fit offspring, as a market process. That is why if we could develop a package of enhancements, the enhanced people could displace the unenhanced in as little as 2000 years.

We rightly reject "final solutions" for disfavored minorities. But it is solutions chosen for us by a ruling class, not solutions chosen by people in their mating choices.

Your enhanced vs unenhanced people is a fascinating prediction, Jon. Seems very apt, too. Did you see the movie Gattaca?

And remind me again book of yours deals with the package of enhancements you refer to?

Yes, I saw Gattaca. But it was only about editing out genetic "defects". Not editing in greater abilities.
