Christa (christaw) | 1446 comments My only real goals are to read stuff, and to write down those reads in my reading journal. While I haven't yet decided on a number, I'll likely set it to 25 like I did this year, though I'd like to hit at least 50 because I want to get back in to a "book a week" groove.

Next-in-series I want to note for reference:
Full Contact (Miles Jacoby #3)
Killing Pretty (Sandman Slim #7)

Note to self: Bay's End reading order
BAY'S END
FOG WARNING
THE SOUND OF BROKEN RIBS
THE BEDDING OF BOYS
EVERYTHING IS HORRIBLE NOW
NO HOME FOR BOYS (Summer 2019)

Christa (christaw) | 1446 comments I have a few contemporary philosophy books in the chute for next year. My goal is to read them slowly over time and take notes in a notebook I've set aside for that purpose.

That said... I will resist any attempts to hold me accountable for this goal. :D I'll list them here tomorrow when I'm not typing on my tablet.

message 15: by Christa, The Renewed (new)

Christa (christaw) | 1446 comments It's so nice to have all these cool things in common with friends so that we can enable each other. :D

Speaking of which...

Note to self: When Mrs J adds something to her to-read list, maybe wait till she reads it before grabbing it. I don't feel bad that I didn't like it, but I do feel bad for slamming it with two stars when she hasn't even finished it yet. But I'm weird and overthink things, so yeah.

So.

Anyone remember my Weird Challenge from 2017? You know, the really cool one that died an awful death immediately after I tried to move it to a blog, because we all know by now that I can't keep a blog going for more than a month?

Yeah, that one.

I'd like to do something similar for 2019. Not as a challenge, really, but sort of as a creative exercise alongside the main event. Hell, I may even just recycle the original Weird challenge instead of coming up with something new. Because, as we all know, "creative" starts with blatant copying...

I feel like I'm doing this wrong. I don't care. Just throwing that out there.

Anyway, the original Weird Challenge is here for those who missed it or don't remember it because it died so quickly. /topic/show/...

message 16: by DoodlePanda (new)

DoodlePanda | 1226 comments Oh yea, I had completely forgotten about the weird challenge!
Will be interesting to see how that turns out! :D

Also: I'm pretty sure there is no "doing it wrong" so you do whatever you enjoy! <3

Christa (christaw) | 1446 comments MrsJoseph wrote: "Which book? Butterface? I haven't finished that one...it was...getting touchy."

Yeah, that one. I almost didn't finish it but I wanted it to count so I did some half-assed speed-reading through the last third of it. It really overdid the "she's so ugly!" thing, the dude seemed like he was made of cardboard and most of the other characters acted like children.

MrsJoseph wrote: "What about the playing challenge? I loved that one"

Ugh. Doesn't sound promising. Yeah, I was getting the "she's ugly" thing on overload. Also, the one after is called "Muffin Top" and it sounds like it may have the same problems.

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 3289 comments Oh! The video game one. :-D

Oooooh! We should find a way to combine the two.

message 22: by Christa, The Renewed (new)

Christa (christaw) | 1446 comments Yeah, I think I'm going to skip that author. Not my thing.

OOOH! Yeah! I remember that now! Well, I would love to do something like that if I could, but I don't really get a lot of time to just play whatever games I want anymore. I'm usually helping Usual make gaming content for his channel so that sort of dictates what I'm playing. I don't have the gaming freedom I used to have and honestly, it's starting to get to me lately but... I don't know.

Have you read any Talia Hibbert? I am loving her so far. She creates great characters.

I'm gonna check her out! I just added A Girl Like Her to my TBR. :)

Stephanie (quiltsrme) | 459 comments A book a week is a good challenge. I only get more books done because I don't have a regular job (although I am a caregiver and my elderly Mom's go-fer).

message 26: by Nyssa, Series Addict (new)

Nyssa | 1563 comments I think my very first GR goal was a book a week. I was a stay-at-home mom back then.

Oh how times have changed.

I’ll be happy if I can manage one book a month. It’s been much more difficult than imagined.

message 27: by Christa, The Renewed (new)

Christa (christaw) | 1446 comments I think I'm just gonna stick with the book-a-week goal and skip adding the Weird Challenge or anything else. I've got other personal projects I'll be working on and I don't want to pile up my plate with self-invented obligations. I'll already be writing notes and such in my reading journal, that will be enough.

message 28: by HomeInMyShoes (new)

LOL There's quite a bit of truth in that. :D I should have said, "more self-invented obligations".

message 30: by DoodlePanda (new)

DoodlePanda | 1226 comments LOL so true!
I think it's a good idea to have a goal you can accomplish :)

message 31: by MrsJoseph *grouchy*, Resident Book Pusher (new)

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 3289 comments IDK. I don't think I have any goals right now. Maybe read things I own again. But I've been reading trash lately (Doodles and Christa were already forced to hear about that, lol).

I'm pretty much back to "just read stuff" in terms of goals. The book per week thing is about where it should shake out now that I'm back in the habit of reading at least a little every single night before bed. I've got some novellas on the TBR which should balance out any longer-than-anticipated reads that pop up.

That's indeed the best way to start the new year. I've still got quite a few of her books on my TBR list, and am trying to space them out so that they'll last longer. I might get one for my reading retreat.

I'm really liking her stuff so far. My first read from her was Hunted, which almost put me off because of the way the beginning of the book has a lot of focus on the most unlikable character. I'm glad I stuck with it, because Hunted turned out to be really good after all, and Craven Manor was awesome. :)

I'm actually avoiding adding her books to my Kindle Unlimited wishlist because I know if they're one click away on my Kindle, I'll go through them too quickly. :D

Second book down. Sick House 4-stars. In-your-face horror. It was a fun and often gross read. :D

Christa (christaw) | 1446 comments dun dun dun another one bites the dust...

Third book down! Wooo!

Browsing through reviews for Skinner Luce, it seems to get a mixed response. I loved it. Seems strange to get so invested in a character that is detached and only capable of feeling a very low level of empathy, but there it is.

message 43: by DoodlePanda (new)

DoodlePanda | 1226 comments Yay!

Oh, I can so relate to that. I was the same way. You know the toy wish book catalogs that come out at Christmas time? That's how I've always felt about the really big Staples office supply catalogs. LOL

My washi tape collection is totally out of control, and I can't stop with the journaling projects. My latest is a virtual travel journal binder. I finished creating the dividers for it the other day.

(Hope that works, I've literally never shared an album on my Amazon Photos account before. )

My wife does too. I like pens and books, but not as much as her and I tend to doodle, I don't journal that much.

message 50: by Bianca (new)

Bianca van Willigenburg (biancavw) | 1734 comments I love getting stationary and art supplies (to me they're intertwined).

I've been trying not to look to much on Jetpens.com because they've got too many things I want and need (at least IMHO I need them).
