Aesha (aesha_) | 31 comments I’m going to read Where’d You Go, Bernadette? I’ve had it on my kindle for a couple years and I better get it finished before the movie

message 53: by Tomiko (new)

Tomiko Watts | 1 comments I am going to ready The Woman in the Window. Mainly because I am excited to see another film with Amy Adams as the lead.

message 54: by Marlene (new)

Marlene (fuzzycerts) | 4 comments Hmm, would Captain Marvel, Volume 1: In Pursuit of Flight or any of the other Captain Marvel comics count even if the movie might not necessarily cover a specific arc from it?

hmm, I would say that this particular instance with Captain Marvel couldn't count for January. Comics/graphic novels are generally fine for our challenge but this month is tricky since it's an adaptation. I would say that unless it was an adaptation of a specific volume or collection then it can't count. For example reading Watchmen would count if the film was coming out this year, or reading the first volume of the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Vol. 1: The Crucible could count if season 1 of the Netflix show was being released this year. On the other hand, reading past issues of Archie wouldn't count since the tv show Riverdale doesn't really follow those. I think Captain Marvel adaptation here is more similar to Riverdale. From what I can tell it's not actually adapting In Pursuit of Flight?

Sorry!

I was considering that (I read the Secret History in 2018 and really liked it), but the length is intimidating me because I don't seem to have much dedicated reading time these days lol.

I think I've settled on the Sun is Also a Star. I might use my Audible credit to get it. But seeing the Nightingale on the list makes me want to read that too. Or possibly a re-read of the Golden Compass. I just saw that A Gentleman in Moscow was announced as a TV mini-series but I don't think there's a release date yet:/

Irene. (kittenbones) | 36 comments hi, hello, long-time lurker coming out of the shadows. I got myself a Kindle over the holidays to make better use of my free time and figured the challenge might be fun (and give me a little bit of direction as someone coming back to reading regularly for the first time in years).

I'm considering Lovecraft Country, NOS4A2, or The Knife of Never Letting Go for no other reason than the plots sound weird + interesting. I downloaded samples of each so I'm going to give those a peek and make my decision tonight!

i still don't know what i want to read!

I saw that In The Tall Grass, which is based on a Stephen King/Joe Hill novella, should be released this year but there's no official date for it. Maybe IT, for the chapter 2 release?! IDK... The Visible Filth sounds good too (the adaptation is "Wounds" with Dakota Johnson)

message 59: by Cathryn (new)

Cathryn (esmenoir) | 33 comments So I read the first few chapters of Little Women and it was terribly slow. I need to read something that moves a little quicker atm, so I checked out some lists and saw that The Sun is Also a Star was available at my local library. I picked it up this morning and I'm enjoying it a lot.

Sara G | 15 comments Yay! More reading challenges. I'm going to finally read Pet Sematary for my January book.

SueEllen I'm going to read The Turn of the Screw. Just bought it from Waterstones.

enjoy! i listened to it on audiobook over the summer and really liked it.

Kim | 65 comments Ugh I read The Visible Filth and it was utter trash. I do not recommend.

message 64: by Julie (new)

Julie (javilla) | 8 comments I'm going to read Lovecraft Country. I discovered that I had downloaded it months ago on my Kindle.

message 65: by Dainey (new)

Dainey | 69 comments I picked up Pet Sematary as well. Will be interesting to reread after about twenty years or so, see if it strikes adult fears more than a sullen young teen's world.

I briefly thought about Artemis Fowl, but decided after seeing the casting call for Artemis that a refresher might not be the best for me if I intend to watch it.

message 66: by Katie (new)

Katie | 3 comments Just finished mine! I chose Where'd You Go, Bernadette? and I really enjoyed it. It was an easy read and a wild ride.

I think I'm going to also read The Sun is Also a Star.

Damn, I was actually considering switching to this cause it's short + I'm feeling kind of lazy.

That it was short was the only thing it had going for it. I read it before bed last night. Messy and not creepy or scary just a pile of trash.

message 69: by jennifer (new)

jennifer (seukoteul) I'm actually gonna try and keep up with the onto reading challenge this time so I'm gonna start with the The Sun is Also a Star

message 70: by Diandra (new)

Diandra (costcochurros) | 5 comments I'm going to read The Sun Is Also a Star as I've been meaning to read it for a while.

Anything fun and upbeat I can add to the list for this month would be appreciated, I'm trying to put more energy into the challenge this year. I kept getting distracted by other books last year. :(

message 71: by Keri (new)

Keri (keri91) | 39 comments I just finished The Underground Railroad! I DLed The Sun is Also a Star so I'm going to start it this weekend when I'm stuck on 3 flights (22 hours travel total... help lol.)

message 72: by Anna (new)

Anna (heyannarld) | 2 comments Decided to read Artemis Fowl for this one. Finished it pretty quickly so tempted to check out something else now.

message 73: by Tejal (last edited Jan 07, 2019 07:24AM) (new)

Tejal (ohsodebonair) | 78 comments I was planning to read The Goldfinch but honestly my head is not in any space to try and tackle such a long book. So I'm going to read The Power instead and shelve The Goldfinch maybe for the Friendship theme instead.

ETA: Apparently The Power isn't coming out in 2019. So it might be The Woman in the Window now lol.

message 74: by Carla (new)

Carla (hidingmyheart) Reading The Sun Is Also a Star. About halfway through and enjoying it so far.

Rabbit {Paint me like one of your 19th century gothic heroines!} (raven_tiger) | 17 comments my username on LJ is raven_tiger

I finally got my library copy of The Woman in the Window

message 76: by Rocio (new)

Rocio (inmybookcase) I find All The Bright Places kind of cringey at times. It can be very... teenage angst-y, and Finch can be very pretentious and pushy with Violet in a way that makes me uncomfortable sometimes. The book is entertaining tho, somehow, even if it’s not the best couple.

message 77: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 14 comments I started the Sun is Also a Star (and just got an e-mail that Where'd You Go, Bernadette is also at the library, lol, so I guess I'll be reading that too?). I'm really enjoying it so far. I love the asides into the background characters.

message 78: by Hannah (new)

Hannah (pajamafish) I started (and finished) The Sun is Also a Star on New Years Day and really enjoyed it! I'm finishing up some other books now, but my hold for Where'd You Go, Bernadette came in at the library so I'll probably read that one too.

message 79: by Irene. (new)

Irene. (kittenbones) | 36 comments I'm 80~ ish percent through NOS4A2 and it's reeeeeeally good. I'm looking forward to the show now and I didn't even know about it until I chose the book.

I was considering picking a second book to fit challenge if I finished early but I found this month's theme so hard that I'm just gonna read something light from my tbr instead lol.

message 80: by Vicki (new)

Vicki (brittunculi) | 7 comments I read the sun is also a star because I’ve been struggling with finishing books lately so I thought I’d start with something that seemed a bit lighter and easier! It was cute, some of it was annoying but the characters are teenagers so i let it slide.

message 81: by Keri (new)

Keri (keri91) | 39 comments Vicky, I felt the same way! I just finished earlier. That whole fight they had was sooo stupid but I let it go cause... teenage drama.

message 82: by Aesha (new)

Aesha (aesha_) | 31 comments Thanks Vicky and Keri. I was flip flopping between reading The Sun is Also A Star or The Underground Railroad next, and chose the latter. I feel more secure about that decision now. I still think I’ll read it eventually but will skip it for now!

Rabbit {Paint me like one of your 19th century gothic heroines!} (raven_tiger) | 17 comments I just finished The Woman in the Window. I enjoyed it. Anna's memory was unreliable but she also wasn't completely wrong.

I just finished chapter 32 where she's about to leave her apartment to go see what's happened across the road.

message 87: by Carla (new)

Carla (hidingmyheart) So The Sun Is Also a Star was good but not great. If you are a hopeless romantic you will probably love it. I am not, so....ha. I really enjoyed some aspects of it but some parts just had me rolling my eyes, esp. the ending. Overall I gave it 3 stars.

message 88: by Rozalina (new)

Rozalina (rozalinaa) | 25 comments Ive decided to add “Little Women to my mix. I wasn’t going to since I read it as a child but I realize i don’t remember anything except that the character “Laurie is actually a boy and “Jo is a girl which had confused 10 year old me lol

message 89: by Sara (new)

Sara (srogovin) | 5 comments I finished The Woman in the Window last night. It was a super fun page turner. As I was reading I was really wondering how they were going to adapt it for the screen, and the Amy Adams casting interests me a lot too. I gave it 4 stars.

message 90: by Despina (last edited Jan 15, 2019 12:32PM) (new)

Despina Karras (despinakarras) | 13 comments I had The Rhythm Section on hold at the library for a while, so I read that because I heard the movie was coming out this year. But it's weird that IMDB says it's supposed to come out in about a month and I still can't find a trailer for it, or the roles Sterling K. Brown and Jude Law are supposed to play.

The book itself was okay. There were lots of character names to remember and some scenes got bogged down with too many details, but it was an interesting story. I wouldn't recommend it if you have a fear of flying, though!

message 91: by Rocio (new)

Rocio (inmybookcase) Finished All The Bright Places last night. Boy, that ending...
I think I’m gonna try The Sun Is Also A Star next.

I'm going to read this because I didn't like "can you keep a secret".

message 93: by Katie (new)

Katie (littlelistmaker) I was sick with the flu and then a sinus infection for the first three weeks of the month but I'm being wishy-washy about whether anything that's being adapted this year even appeals to me. Last year I read Annihilation and A Wrinkle In Time and was excited about both. It feels like a bad start to not complete the first challenge of the year!

message 94: by SueEllen (new)

SueEllen I just finished The Turn of the Screw today. I'm not sure what to make of it, I'm probably going to reread it again to understand it better.

message 95: by [deleted user] (new)

Finally decided on a book for the challenge - The Devil All the Time. I started it and it seems extremely up my alley. I have some work reading/prep I need to get out of the way these next couple days but after that I look forward to getting stuck in.

I put In The Tall Grass on hold... I was planning on tackling It, but realistically I don't think that's going to happen soon lol.

message 97: by Alison (new)

Alison | 4 comments Is The Woman in Cabin 10 coming out in 2019? I saw that it was optioned by CBS Films but no other information!

message 98: by Casey (new)

Casey (casey-h) | 1 comments (I'm Ahria on LJ)

I decided to read The Sun is Also a Star for the challenge. Let me tell you, this did not seem like a book I would enjoy (contemporary? no fantasy elements?? pfft.) I was so pleasantly surprised. Despite not having an immigrant experience and not experiencing racism personally, I still identified my teen self with Natasha a lot. So much of her emotional journey with her father is familiar to me (expect it was my mom). I liked the style, the random asides, and even the ending. (view spoiler)

I'm a bit late to the game but I'm also interested in reading The Knife of Never Letting Go as I have it in my audible library and it was recommended by a friend. I also think Lovecraft Country sounds interesting, so might look into buying that. And I haven't read Little Women since I was 9 so can't remember much, but I saw a film adaptation recently and loved it so might have a look at that too if I can get a copy at the library.

I listened to The Secret History a few years ago narrated by Donna Tartt. It was literally the worst audible experience I have ever had. Sooooo long, sooooo boring and nothing relatable about any of the characters. Also it sounded like Marvin the Paranoid Android reading, it wasn't even touchingly sad, it was self-indulgently morose and repetitive. I was going to give Tartt another shot since The Goldfinch has so many good reviews, but after seeing the LJ post for this I have decided against it.

Finished Can You Keep a Secret? today after having the paperback on my shelf for literally YEARS and it was super cute and now I'm looking forward to the movie.
