Sapiens
question
Books like Sapiens and The Gene, but for other topics.

Can people provide good books that follow the formulas of Sapiens and The Gene for other topics? Right now I'm looking for something that covers the elements and how they assemble to make complex elements, etc.
Sapiens - A Brief History of Humankind
The Gene - An Intimate History

There are three wonderful books by Theodore Gray, Elements, Molecules, and Reactions. They are pictorial but have accurate explanations and good analogies, and are gorgeous.
Elements: A Visual Exploration of Every Known Atom in the Universe
Molecules: The Elements and the Architecture of Everything
Reactions: An Illustrated Exploration of Elements, Molecules, and Change in the Universe
(By the way, while 'Sapiens' is certainly written in an appealing way, I didn't find it a good book due to too many simplifications and innacuracies)

Thinking fast and slow - loved sapiens and once your past the intro TFAS is equally insightful.
Try Cosmos from Carls Sagan. A beautiful book for newbie who want to know about universe.
late comment and might not be exactly what you're looking for, but I found Mortals: How the Fear of Death Shaped Human Society by Rachel E. Menzies and Ross G. Menzies to be a great analysis of the ways in which death has influenced the beliefs and actions of humans over the course of history.
Bill Bryson Books I feel are similar, "A Brief History of Everything" and "At Home: A History of Private Life"
The Holy Bible
The Holy Bible: The Holy Bible is considered the most read book in the world.
