Do you have any 1001 books you have read and no longer want?

We thought it would be nice to have a place where we could list the 1001 books we no longer want and if any other group member wants them they can request them. The idea is this is a goodness of your heart swap and you pay the postage to send the book.

If you have any books to swap list them here and remember to update your post once you no longer have the books.

Please add details of where you are willing to post to.

George P. | 701 comments I am in Utah (USA) and have nine books from the 1001 list that I will send in the USA for someone who wants to read them. I'm going to put a limit of three per person. They are:

At Swim-Two-Birds by Flann O'Brien
The Beautiful Mrs Seidenman by Andrezej Szczypiorski
Broken April by Ismail Kadare
Good Morning Midnight by Jean Rhys
The Hour of the Star by Clarice Lispector
Journey to the End of the Night by Louis-Ferdinand Celine
The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver
Posthumous Memories of Bras Cubas (aka Epitaph of a Small Winner) by Machado de Assis
The Unknown Soldier by Vaino Linna

These are mostly by European and Latin American authors not on the shelves of most US public libraries, which is why I bought them. Their condition varies from nearly-new to fair. If you are in one of my 1001 Books groups or one of my Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ friends they will be free, otherwise I'll just want shipping cost.

George, I would be interested in:
Good Morning Midnight by Jean Rhys
The Hour of the Star by Clarice Lispector
Journey to the End of the Night by Louis-Ferdinand Celine

If they are still available, I can PM you our US post box if you don't want to send to Canada.

Thanks

Sorry but I'm limiting it to United States addresses due to the cost and hassle of international shipping.

We talked about this in the March BOTM thread. Try searching Abe books for the alternate title: S. you should find copies for under $6, including shipping:

This isn't't a swap but if you haven't read Growth of Soil, it is free today as an e book. Kindle/Amazon.

message 12: by Gail (new)

Gail (gailifer) | 2121 comments I think maybe only vol 1 is free but I can’t really tell. The ap says it is 600 pages and what I downloaded is only 323 pages and Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ says it is over 400 pages. In some editions there is a volume 2. Does anyone know if what is free today is only half of what is on the 1001 list?

Growth of the Soil" is a novel by Knut Hamsun which won him the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1920. The novel was written in the popular style of Norwegian new realism, a movement dominating the early 20th century. It exemplified Hamsun's aversion to modernity and inclination towards primitivism and the agrarian lifestyle.
"Growth of the Soil" portrays the main protagonist, Isak, and his family as awed by modernity, yet at times, they come into conflict with it.

The novel contains two sections entitled Book One and Book Two. The first book focuses almost solely on the story of Isak and his family and the second book starts off by following the plight of Axel and ends mainly focusing on Isak's family.

My notes show Gutenberg Australia always has it free, but just regular text, not Kindle. I think Australian copyright is a little shorter than U.S.

Yes, the English university (Middlesex) that published the English translation has closed its press. The cheapest copy I could find was $85 US. I was able to get it by interlibrary loan however. I enjoyed it. If you could read German you could get a copy at a reasonable price. Some of my great-great grandparents came from Germany but that was no help.
