I didn't get on the waitlist fast enough for this one, so now I have to wait my turn. I am currently the 4th hold of 35, so not too bad. I'm really looking forward to it though.

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15865 comments I'm almost halfway through Beartown and I really wish I was reading it as a group/buddy read. I need to share some of my thoughts so I'll just do it here. It started a bit slow for me but now I find it hard to put down. I love getting to know all the characters, and I think they're very well-written. So true to life, they feel like such real people! If that makes sense. (view spoiler)

message 353: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 18729 comments I had very similar thoughts and feelings with that one, Peggy. There were a couple parts that were difficult to read, but it was so well written. Once you become engaged you need to know what's going to happen to all of them.

Did you know that he wrote a second book about them? I guess people wanted to know more. It's called Us Against You.

message 354: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15865 comments Yeah, I found out about that a few days ago. Haven't looked at the book page yet though, I'm not sure if the blurb will be spoilerish for Beartown.

message 355: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 18729 comments I'd wait just in case too. Beartown is a complete story on its own, so you don't need to read the second if you choose not to, which is good.

message 356: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59001 comments I just came from Audible's site where I bought Us Against You. I loved Beartown. I think Fredrick Bergman is an incredible writer. I just finished reading My Grandmother Sends Her Regards and Apologises.

Kristie | 18729 comments I just started Daughter of Moloka'i, which I'm really looking forward to. I read Moloka'i 3 years ago, but feel like this one is bringing me right back.

I am also starting Lies on audio today. I will use it for the one word title task for the movie mania challenge.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I picked a two books that could not more different to read at the same time Early Riser - set in Wales during an ice age and people dying because they cannot make it through the winter and their hibernation and The Lost Man - set in the hottest place in Australia and people dying of exposure from the 45C degree heat and lack of water. The former - funny and the latter absolutely sober. Both a mystery because you just do not know what is going to happen next.

message 360: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I have just over 100 pages left in The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle. It's been a wacky ride!

I am also just starting The Rose Garden for the Movie Mania challenge. It's been sitting on my TBR for a while now so I'm glad to finally get to it.

message 361: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11430 comments I've finished The Obelisk Gate and was not impressed with the story but loved the narration.

Started Perdido Street Station and OMG is it unusual!

message 362: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18545 comments I read His Bloody Project: Documents Relating to the Case of Roderick Macrae for the toppler and now i'm back on The Obelisk Gate for the buddy read although i think most of the others have already finished.

Oh yes Margo. You're in for some weirdness that's for sure.

message 363: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15865 comments What did you think of His Bloody Project, Sarah?

message 364: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18545 comments Peggy wrote: "What did you think of His Bloody Project, Sarah?"

I really liked it. It was well written. I liked the way it was told. It was bleak. Loved the setting and all the local words for things. Reminded me of Burial Rites. I would definitely read more of the authors work in the future.

message 365: by PattyMacDotComma (new)

PattyMacDotComma Finally, I've read a Bosch mystery, The Black Echo, the first of the popular series by Michael Connelly. In 1992, LA cops fought crime with payphones and state-of-the-art pagers and faxes. And guns. Always guns. Looks like I'm in for a long ride!

Tricia (triciareadsitall) | 900 comments I read both Beartown and Us Against You for the toppler last week. LOL I might have gone on about them just a little bit. Loved them both.

Now, I'm reading Daughter of Moloka'i for a buddy read. I'm not very far in, but so far, I like it.

I'm also reading The Splendor Before the Dark because I needed a book about ancient Rome for the yearly challenge. This one begins with the great fire when Emperor Nero, the narrator, supposedly played the fiddle while Rome burned. He didn't do that in the book, by the way. I'm listening to the audio version, and I have no idea if it is or not but the narrator sounds like the same person who did The Song of Achilles. I think that's helping me enjoy it more than I might otherwise.

It is weird Sarah but my only problem so far is with the narration. A lot of the characters sound like daleks. I keep expecting Dr. Who to leap in!

Sandra (sanlema) | 11088 comments Finished The Dreamers and it was only 2 stars for me. Boring. Flat writing. (view spoiler) Karen Thompson Walker is not for me.

I will start today Perdido Street Station for the buddy read.

Bummer! I've now heard the same thing from quite a few people. I have it borrowed from Overdrive and planned to start it as soon as I'm done with the monthly read and a couple of buddy reads, but I'm thinking it's probably not going to go so well.

Janice (jamasc) | 59001 comments I finished Daughter of Moloka'i this afternoon. I'll start Rosemary and Rue for the group themed read tomorrow.

message 378: by Annerlee (new)

Annerlee | 2845 comments I started listening to Perdido Street Station on audiobook for the buddy read thread and am finding it hard going. I get the feeling the author is a protentious bohemian p****! ... If a talented one...

If anyone has read the book and thinks otherwise (or the same) your thoughts would be greatly appreciated. I'm currently visiting Fenn in part 2 on a mission to the slums there and at the slaughterhouse.

message 379: by Cherie (last edited Mar 04, 2019 02:02PM) (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments hahaha, Annerlee! I am not sure I am qualified to answer because although I started Perdido Street Station at one time, I did not get very far. It was tough going with the paperback too, so I cannot imagine it in audiobook. I wanted to get to this one in the buddy read, but I am not sure I will....yet.

I only read his Un Lun Dun. It was an interesting introduction to his work, but maybe too juvenile.

message 380: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 18729 comments I am reading Lies, but I am not loving it. If I wasn't reading it for a purpose I'd probably put it aside. I don't really care what happens. I think the MC is foolish and annoying. I read a couple reviews and other people that didn't love it said there is a decent twist towards the end, so I I'm hoping it's worth it.

message 382: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I finished The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle. This ended up being a bit of a mixed bag for me. There was plenty I liked about it but also things I didn't like. Here is my review: /review/show...

message 383: by Roz (new)

Roz | 4470 comments I've been reading a lot (for me) this past week (had the time). I finished 4 books so far and have 2 going. Right now I'm half way through Sourdough (I actually started listening to it but I've switched to reading instead) and I started The Wonder. Moving along.

message 384: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11088 comments I really liked The Wonder, Roz. Very atmospheric. I hope you enjoy it.

message 385: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59001 comments I finished The Girl They Left Behind for my irl book club. It will fit my movie mania challenge too.

I will start The Saturday Night Ghost Club. I think I can plug it into the challenge as well.

message 386: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 18729 comments I gave up on Lies at 56%. I figured it was way too much effort to get through it and I certainly gave it enough of a chance reading more than half. It just wasn't for me.

I started Rosemary and Rue for the group read instead and it is much more enjoyable.

message 387: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11430 comments Annerlee wrote: "I started listening to Perdido Street Station on audiobook for the buddy read thread and am finding it hard going. I get the feeling the author is a protentious bohemian p****! ... If ..."

I'm with you Annerlee! I bailed out at the slaughterhouse. It was more than I could take:( I had the audiobook version and it didn't help that all the secondary characters sounded like Daleks!

message 388: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11430 comments I finished The Whereabouts of Eneas McNulty. I have listened to 3 books in this family saga and this one filled in a few important blanks but it was the weakest of the three.

This traumatic period in Irish history seems particularly relavent at this time when we on the brink of seeing a new hard border dividing the country.

message 389: by Lisa (last edited Mar 06, 2019 11:22AM) (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I am just past the midway point of The Rose Garden. I'm enjoying it so far. Susanna Kearsley's books are always fun and easy to read and this one is no exception.

I am also just starting The Beauty of the Wolf which is a "just because" read. It was an impulse cover buy more than anything and the reviews it has been getting are not great, but it's a Beauty and the Beast retelling and that's enough to make me want to give it a try.

PattyMacDotComma Mr. Bridge (1969) is the husband of Mrs. Bridge (1959), quite a pair of books by Evan S. Connell. Excellent portrait of a difficult man, which explains a lot about her. (Read hers first.)

Good to hear! I like Sapolsky. Just added this one to my list.

message 396: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59001 comments I finished The Saturday Night Ghost Club last night. It was a quick, enjoyable read. Sarah, you might enjoy this book. Memory is one of the main themes. It's narrated by an adult looking back at one summer when he was 12 years old. It's written by Craig Davidson, aka Nick Cutter.

Next up is Women Talking. This book caught my interest because of the content of abuse towards women in a religious community. It will fit the movie mania challenge.
