There's always one or two books that we put off reading. We've either started it and never finished, or just have never got round to it. With the start of the school year (thanks Renee!), lets get those books that perhaps have haunted us from our school days.

Mission: Read one book you know you should have read a lifetime ago, or one that you've been putting off for ages.

Start Date: 21st August
End Date: 30th September

I love this idea! Now I need to narrow my "ghosts of readings past" down to just one. :p

message 3: by Kassandra (new)

Kassandra | -1 comments I love this idea, I have so many to choose from. Now I just have to see if I have time to fit in another challenge this month.

message 4: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Coyle | 1557 comments I have a stack next to my bed, which one to read?

message 5: by Holly, That Geeky One (new)

Holly (hollycoulson) | 1949 comments Mod
I'm planing on finally getting round to reading Wuthering Heights. I've started it multiple times and have never finished it.

message 6: by Maddie (new)

Maddie (shoegirl81) Jane Eyre. I've started that book five times, enjoyed it and then got distracted again.

message 7: by Camille (new)

Camille (camillesbookishadventures) I have a love/hate relation with Wuthering Heights. The book is great, I love it. But the characters drive me crazy! I just want to line them up and slap them! I do like the fact they are so annoying, though, it's a nice change for the usual perfect characters we get nowadays.

I'll have a look when I get home and see what I can read this week that I have been putting aside for ever. Hopefully a short book!!

Ah, Jane Eyre is wonderful!

Melissa, if you need help picking, you could post your list of possibilities and we could help you pick one? :)

Karen | 289 comments Hmm, maybe this is my cue to finish Brave New World this week...

Go for it!

message 12: by Lauren (new)

Lauren | 85 comments I started Wuthering Heights many times before I finally had to read it at uni, hope you enjoy! I WILL finally tackle The Hobbit, I've never got very far through it.

I'm going with My Ántonia by Willa Cather because 1) I've have it on my tbr for ages and 2) I planned to read it his summer and still haven't gotten to it!!

Karen | 289 comments Sandy wrote: "Karen wrote: "Hmm, maybe this is my cue to finish Brave New World this week..."

So how is it going, Karen?"

I had gotten to the 28% mark over the last couple months. For some reason it hasn't grabbed me yet. However, I shall resume listening while at physiotherapy in the morning and see if I can read it through over the weekend. It doesn't seem to be terribly long.

I've listened to the audio production (excellent) of Windmere and seen the movie adaption (called A Good Woman with Helen Hunt and Scarlett Johansen). You can't go wrong with Oscar Wilde!

message 19: by Holly, That Geeky One (new)

Holly (hollycoulson) | 1949 comments Mod
The Importance of Being Earnest is a great play, and Oscar Wilde is a great writer. I've never got round to Lady Windermere's Fan, so let me know how it goes :)

Oh My God! That's awesome. I wanna be the audience.

Finished My Antonia 8/24/2014!!!
Great Book! :)

message 22: by Holly, That Geeky One (new)

Holly (hollycoulson) | 1949 comments Mod
Go Renee! Do you feel all accomplished now?

message 23: by Renee, Mistress of the Mini-Challenge (new)

Renee M | 4782 comments Mod
Unfortunately, I only feel a sense of accomplishment when I've done something unpleasant. :{

Reading My Antonia was pure pleasure. :)

message 24: by Holly, That Geeky One (new)

Holly (hollycoulson) | 1949 comments Mod
That is very true. I'm expecting to struggle through Wuthering Heights, but I know I'll feel accomplished when I finish it.

message 25: by Renee, Mistress of the Mini-Challenge (new)

Renee M | 4782 comments Mod
For me, the first half of Wuthering went pretty well, but the second half was a chore. (Of course, the first half has all the romance.) I might have done better with it if others had been honest about Heathcliff. Their's is a "Great Love," but I wouldn't have be friends with either of them for money. :)

message 26: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Coyle | 1557 comments Way to go, Renee!!! I have My Antonia on order as of last night. Getting set up for September. Hated Wuthering Heights, I did OK with the first half, but pure drudgery the last half. There was not one character in that darn book that I liked.

Question -- Are we to finish this challenge by the end of Aug. or Sept.? I still have a few mysteries to go and dawdling.

message 27: by Renee, Mistress of the Mini-Challenge (new)

Renee M | 4782 comments Mod
I think it was extended to September 30.

message 28: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Coyle | 1557 comments Oh Good, I can refocus!

message 29: by Holly, That Geeky One (new)

Holly (hollycoulson) | 1949 comments Mod
Yep, it was originally a really short challenge, but due to the amount of people interested, I decided to lengthen it!

message 30: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Coyle | 1557 comments Sandy, did not know, but Amazon owns a little bit more of me, but I know for next time. Thanks, I'll check it out right now and will use them in the future.

I saw O Pioneers! on one of my modules that I can take at Uni. Might have to check it out!

message 33: by Renee, Mistress of the Mini-Challenge (new)

Renee M | 4782 comments Mod
I second that! Wonderful!

message 34: by Holly, That Geeky One (new)

Holly (hollycoulson) | 1949 comments Mod
Due to the recent rave about O Pioneers!, and it's reasonably short length, I've added it to my Kindle. You guys are definitely a bad influence!

message 35: by Overbooked (new)

Overbooked ✎ (kiwi_fruit) | 800 comments I have enjoyed my Antonia, and I have just added O Pioneers! to my TBR list, thanks for the recommendation guys.
Has anyone read These Is My Words? if so how does it compared to O Pioneers! ?

message 36: by Renee, Mistress of the Mini-Challenge (new)

Renee M | 4782 comments Mod
Both Kindle and iBooks offer free versions of the older classics. Don't know if they originated with Gutenberg Project, but they're definitely Public Domain. :)

message 37: by Holly, That Geeky One (new)

Holly (hollycoulson) | 1949 comments Mod
I found a .mobi file of it online, so downloaded that, no payment involved!

And you guys keep on making my TBR list bigger :P

message 38: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Coyle | 1557 comments You are right Holly, it is their fault and I blame them too. :D

message 39: by Renee, Mistress of the Mini-Challenge (new)

Renee M | 4782 comments Mod
Oh, there's plenty of blame to go around!

message 40: by Overbooked (new)

Overbooked ✎ (kiwi_fruit) | 800 comments I totally blame this group :P

I decided to join this mini challenge with A Thousand Splendid Suns, I have not read anything from Khaled Hosseini, I hope to finish it in time.

message 41: by Renee, Mistress of the Mini-Challenge (new)

Renee M | 4782 comments Mod
I loved Thousand Splendid Suns! The only book I've read by the author, but it was outstanding. The gorgeous, musical flow of his writing coupled with exotic, heart-rending Afghanistan.

Okay. Secret sharing. I totally crushed on a guy because he gave that book to me, knowing I would love it. ;)

message 47: by Kassandra (new)

Kassandra | -1 comments Renee, you're too funny. It's so cute that you crushed on him for giving you the book...but really, is there a better reason to crush on someone?!

message 48: by Renee, Mistress of the Mini-Challenge (new)

Renee M | 4782 comments Mod
Exactly!
Plus, Better to have crushed and lost... :D

message 49: by Camille (new)

Camille (camillesbookishadventures) On this subject:
My husband gave me £100 worth of books for my last birthday, it was the cutest thing ever (and quite expensive!!). He even went to the second hand shop to find nice old editions as he knows I love vintage books. His encouragement for me having to work more hours at work was more hours = more money = more books.
Definitely a keeper!! I have a total crush on him ;-)

message 50: by Sean (new)

Sean Liu Percy Jackson and Alex Rider are books I should have read years ago.
