James Tiptree Jr. is a pseudonym for Alice B. Sheldon. By choosing a masculine pen name, having her stories accepted under that name and winning awards with them, Sheldon is created with breaking down barriers for women in the science fiction world by showing that the division between male and female science fiction writing was illusory.

Award-winning SF author Pat Murphy, in collaboration with author Karen Joy Fowler, announced the creation of the James Tiptree, Jr. Literary Award in February of 1991 at WisCon (the world’s only feminist-oriented science fiction convention). The annual literary prize is awarded for for science fiction or fantasy that explores and expands our understanding of gender.
