The second theme for May is The Book I've Been Looking Forward to, just to balance it out. Once again, there are no restrictions in bookshelves to choose from.

Here's the link to the other thread: May 2019 (1 of 2)

Nominees so far 3/10

The Three-Body Problem
Seveneves
The Forever War (+Forever Peace?)
Spoonbenders
Synners
The Wanderer

Ooh, I know exactly what to nominate: The Three-Body Problem! It's supposed to be very very good, but I haven't found time to read it. Now's my, nay, OUR chance!

Cynthia Wheaton | 169 comments I've already read The Three Body Problem, but I have a copy of Seveneves waiting to be read and I'd love to get that one under my belt.
Yes, Three Body Problem is very good... and it is the first volume of a trilogy, and the translator is not the same for all three books.

Surprisingly I haven't got one single title screaming at me as a nomination from this category, I will have to look at my kindle and remind myself of the options.

The Forever War by Joe Haldeman. Even since I've read Camouflage I planned to tap more of his books and this one is one of four pillars of military SF, which show its development according to some

The Forever War deserves its spot among the greatest. In a way I feel like it should Part II of a trilogy with Starship Troopers and Old Man's War. It wasn't what I expected when I first read it but it's really great.

Cynthia Wheaton | 169 comments The Forever War , or pretty much any military SF, would mean that I am reading two dreaded books in the same month...have mercy on me, please!

Torn between:
- The Demolished Man, the first Hugo Award recipient ever.
- anything by Roger Zelazny (never fails to entertain me)
- anything by Connie Willis (been looking forward to sampling her work)
- The Windup Girl (a reread of the book that made me pay extra attention to the whole Hugo award business)

Bingo! You correctly named two other pillars! In case you are interested in the question which is the remaining forth pillar of mil-SF - it is Armor

Never heard of that one but I'll have to check it out.

Startide Rising by David Brin would be my first choice, but I know it's a series read (maybe the next?). My second choice would by Synners by Pat Cadigan.

Cynthia Wheaton | 169 comments I've had Synners on my TBR radar for a couple years. I'd read it if it won.

Here's an idea: two of the earliest Retro Hugo stories, "The Sword in the Stone" & "Ill-Made Knight", by T.H. White, are parts of the complete anthology, "The Once & Future King." It is of course the modern retelling of the Arthurian legends. If we chose the anthology, we could knock out two winners in one book! We could read them separately or as a series but it's an option.

So Allan, should I put your nomination down as Synners? Both of your suggestions are great, we always need ideas for new challenge reads.
