Thank you, I removed shouting at the rain and added Other Words for Home in it's place. That's what happens when it's October 28th and realize, when you go to add next months book, that you forgot to post the poll. :)

You don't, but it would be easier to understand her character, motives and personality from the first book, Raymie Nightingale.

Thank you for voting.

The book chosen in our poll, three cheers for write-ins, was Prairie Lotus by Linda Sue Park.

Prairie Lotus by Linda Sue Park

I recognize that many libraries across the country are closed. The beauty of our group is that you can comment on each book long after they are the "book of the month."

Just be careful to avoid spoilers!

I'm 3/4 into this book right now- Five starred reviews. Looking forward to hearing everyone's thoughts...

message 30: by Shari (Shira) (new)

Shari (Shira) | 86 comments Hanna, a biracial Chinese/European girl, experiences on the prairie were quite different than Laura Ingalls Wilder's. Park does an excellent job of highlighting the false narratives about the Chinese and exposing how the Native Americans were treated by the European settlers. The March and April books were much better.

message 39: by Shari (Shira) (new)

Shari (Shira) | 86 comments It has been 75 years since the end of WWII. We all have read many books, seen lots of movies, and watched lots of PBS Specials about the war. In this very crowded field, Lois Lowry gives us fresh, new stories and perspectives about the momentous, world-changing event in elegant, touching verse.

I listened to the audio (I can't wait to see the print - the illustrations I saw online looked gorgeous) The structure is perfect. The seeds planted in the beginning blossom at the end. Everything ties together. It's tiny, and lovely, and poignant and powerful. I'm on my second listen (it takes a hot 40 minutes) and I may listen a 3rd time.

Excellent choice! I received this ARC from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Bradley puts the "real" in realistic fiction. Real with a capital R. I have read other stories about children in foster care (One for the Murphys, The Great Gilly Hopkins) but none of them were as rang as true or was so painfully honest. I think of all of the "Dellas" who were in my classes. I was not ever able to give them a book that reflected their experiences. Now there is one. I hope someone gives it to them. I am grateful that Kimberly Brubaker Bradley made it possible. This book certainly deserve some recognition from the Newbery committee.
