But that's just my take. Let's assume I'm totally wrong. For example, is there a good reason to add that SF bit? If so, what is it?

Part of it might be my lack of background on the process of an Imgur becoming a dragon, but that part was a bit unclear for me.
The themes I picked up on were:
1) Failure can sometimes end up being for the best in the long run if it takes you down a better path (e.g. meeting the love of your life, a better career path, etc.). So don’t let the sense of having failed make you stop striving.
2) Sometimes in order to find success it helps to have support and encouragement instead of being surrounded by haters.
Beyond that I didn’t get too much else out of it, I didn’t feel a strong connection to any of the characters.
So far my Hugo vote for novelette is going to “The Thing About Ghost Stories. Still two more nominees to read though!
