Jacob (paulsen) | 245 comments Welcome to our discussion about "The Way of the Seal" by Mark Divine. I'm looking forward to hearing everyone's thoughts.

Jacob (paulsen) | 245 comments I'm almost done with the first chapter. I like the premise of finding your "Stand." Mark references how he asks people in his program what is their "why" and that reminded me of Simon Sinek's book.

I appreciate that so far the author is teaching about business by using the lessons from Elite Warriors without making it too much about Navy Seals.

I'm also grateful for the exercises at the end of each chapter. Love that!

Melinda (melindamb) I finally got my copy. Because there wasn't a Kindle edition, I had to get it sent from England because it is quicker to have books sent from the other side of world than order them through my bricks and morter. This is not a complaint, just a fact.

I'm really looking forward to reading it. Is anybody else going to be doing the exercises as you read it? I wouldn't mind comparing notes.

Jacob (paulsen) | 245 comments I will be doing all the exercises though I admit that I skipped one about writing down one's "stand" as I've done that recently. I have been practicing the deep breathing exercises designed to clear the mind. Let's just say I need a lot of practice.

Susan Beamon (susanbeamon) | 18 comments I am half way through the book. The author did say one way to study the book and subject matter was to first read the book without stopping, and then to go back and do the exercises. That is my plan on the reading, with the exception of the breathing exercises. As they are in the book, they track with the breathing training I had in my mindfulness experience. When I do go back for the exercises in the book, I will have to create a time and a place for them. My normal reading space is not designed for doing anything except reading.
I am finding this book more practical that some of the other recent books. I like that.

I'm really struggling with this book. It's really not the type of book I enjoy reading anymore. I'm really struggling with my been there done that and got the t-shirt attitude just after the first chapter.

Time to dig my heals in, push the cynacism aside and do it anyway.

Susan Beamon (susanbeamon) | 18 comments Finished reading this book and now I've been thinking about what it had to say. It very definitely falls in the category of self help and self improvement, if you don't fancy business studies. The author constantly refers back to his life as a SEAL and as a business owner, both successes and failures, to illustrate his points. Some of this information I have read in other places. As someone who has lived with osteoarthritis for some 25 years and MS for 15 years, I am very familiar with the breathing exercises for pain control and stress relief. I was reminded of Execution Is The Strategy while reading many of the later principles.
My biggest quibble with the book is all the acronymns. Having been in the Army and USPS, I understand the alphabet soup that things can get reduced to, but they don't increase my mellow. I always have to stop and remember what they were supposed to convey.

Jacob (paulsen) | 245 comments I'm coming up on the end of the book. I love the exercises and everything about the book is practical and usable. I think the military type metaphors are particularly effective for me where for others they could be less so. All around I'm enjoying it and do feel like it has pushed me to some action around things that I can do better or have been slacking to do well recently.

Action is always the key by which I measure books in the genre and to that degree I'm happy!

Melinda (melindamb) I liked the business case studies, but he lost me with all Seal and family stories. I only made it half-way through.
