Paulo Limp (paulolimp) | 164 comments So... Like many others, I'm excited about reading The Last Unicorn, and also like many I'm having trouble finding a copy. And then I stumbled upon these links:

Apparently, Mr. Beagle has been cheated by his former agent, who retains many of the rights over the author's works. What concerns me the most is the following (extracted from the first link)

I first must reiterate that Cochran owns much of Beagle's creative work and operates much of 'his' social media. This includes the "Peter S. Beagle" and "The Last Unicorn" Facebook pages (where Cochran is restricting comments to prevent whistleblowers from informing other fans). That means right now the only safe way to purchase Beagle's works and make sure the money actually gets to him is through Tachyon Publications.

The only publication for TLU that I was able to find at Tachyon Publications was the Graphic Novel, which does not interest me.

As far as I could cross-reference, the story seems to be true (or its main parts at least).

In that case I ask you, my friends: From where could I safely buy The Last Unicorn, so to benefit Mr. Beagle, and not his ex-agent?

Also, to this wonderful community, I ask to research into the matter to clarify the truth within this story (it is the internet, after all), and how Mr. Beagle is doing these days.

Thanks a lot!

Iain Bertram (iain_bertram) | 1730 comments 2nd hand book :-(

Robert Lee (harlock415) | 315 comments As far as I can tell, purchasing any new printed versions of The Last Unicorn supports the author. Conlon Press has dissolved after filing for bankruptcy.

Paulo Limp (paulolimp) | 164 comments The most recent piece of information regarding the bankruptcy I was able to find is this:

That manipulation can’t continue. In April (2018) , the bankruptcy court denied Connor’s attempt to get Chapter 11 restructuring and sent him to Chapter 7 liquidation. (Definition: he must sell business assets to pay creditors.) Expect games to hide assets he already has a record of hiding personal income to dodge debts by disguising it as company expenses but the dogs are on his heels.

The vast majority of value seems to be The Last Unicorn property. The next steps will decide what creditors get, including Peter. That’s now being sorted out with others, based on business done with the property after Cochran took control of it. Others may have honest claims, but at the least, Peter is breaking free of someone who isn’t.

Maybe only after these "next steps" the money will be coming to the right person?

Edit: After giving it some thought I've followed Iain advice, and bought it 2nd hand.

Who is flayrah.com?
I'm not in a hurry to support fraudsters but also in this day and age I like to be certain where my information is coming from before I start forming opinions based on it.

Also Beagle doesn't seem to be in dire straits. Thankfully.

And the supportpeterbeagle.com site is vetted here. So that helps.

Paulo Limp (paulolimp) | 164 comments Thanks Tom! That link is a bit old (from 2017) but is surely reassuring.

The link seems to be broken.

David H. (bochordonline) The link isn't broken exactly, but File 770 seems to be down at the moment.

I just checked and it's back up. Mike (Glyer, who runs the site) mentioned earlier today that it might be off line for a while because of some maintenance, which must be finished.
