SOLVED: Children's/YA > SOLVED. Trying to help a friend! Looking for a possible dystopian YA novel involving high school(?) students who are trapped somewhere and are trying to escape. [s]

Kiwi (thisissurreal) My friend said they read the book around 4-5 years ago, when they were in middle school. They have vague memory of the plot, and described it as such: "it was about like, these students that get randomly sent in, they'd be separated into groups. if they broke rules they'd get killed? i cant remember it but the story is how they planned to escape."
They also said that they remember a wall, and that the students were watched by cameras. They can't be certain of the setting; it might be a school, but they don't remember. They described it as a building with a bunch of rooms, and the characters were sent food and other stuff once in a while from outside(?) My friend's memory is very foggy, so the details might not be exactly the same.
EDIT: My friend has described the people as "students" but they told me since their memory is not clear, the school setting isn't reliable. They said the building made them think of school, though it most likely isn't one.
EDIT 2: My friend provided more information: The protagonist is male, but my friend said there might've been switching POVs. (Keyword: MIGHT.)

SPOILERS: Apparently several kids died, and the protag had run away with someone else, specifically a girl.

Also, it's not The Maze Runner, I asked, and they said that wasn't it.

By the way, if any of y'all know of a book that sounds even slightly similar to this, please suggest it! My friend's memory isn't 100% reliable, so ANY help is appreciated. ;w;

EDIT 3: The book is Variant by Robison Wells. Thank you to everyone who responded to this thread!

Sorry, that isn't it! My friend told me that you may as well forget about the school setting because it's probably not school related.

Mai | 1280 comments I know you said it might not be a school setting but searching online I found a novel that fits your friend's description pretty well:
Variant by Robison Wells (book 1 published in 2011; there's a second book called Feedback)

Benson Fisher thought that a scholarship to Maxfield Academy would be the ticket out of his dead-end life.

He was wrong.

Now he’s trapped in a school that’s surrounded by a razor-wire fence. A school where video cameras monitor his every move. Where there are no adults. Where the kids have split into groups in order to survive.

Where breaking the rules equals death.

But when Benson stumbles upon the school’s real secret, he realizes that playing by the rules could spell a fate worse than death, and that escape—his only real hope for survival—may be impossible.

Bonnie | 290 comments I'm going to suggest "House of Stairs," by William Sleator, just because it seems to be a book that many read in middle school. It doesn't quite match everything, but memories do play tricks on us.

My friend just confirmed this is the one! Thank you so much!
