This is the pre-read thread, which means NO SPOILERS. Do not reveal anything in this thread that occurs after the first few chapters of the book. If you'd like to jump in to a discussion or analysis of the book, go to the Part 6 & Overall Spoiler thread.

We are reading the classic Crime and Punishment as our third quarter "big book" group read. This book is about half the length of Count of Monte Cristo, so it will be easier to fit into our busy schedules. I set up a 2 month schedule and a 3 month schedule for those who like to divide a book evenly. Note- section 6 appears to be longer than the others.

As far as I can tell, all versions of this book are divided into 6 parts, so we'll set up the threads accordingly. Let me know if you have a copy that is organized differently.

You should be able to find print copies at any library. Check the summer reading shelf for students if it's not in the adult section. There should also be several free (or cheap) ebooks available at libraries and online bookstores. If you find a link to a free ebook, or a good kindle/audio combination, please post it here.

Please share any information or opinions you have on various translations or audio narrations, or other helpful information.

If you have already read the book, please provide general comments or encouragement in this thread. If you would like to discuss deeper issues, please go to the thread labeled Part 6- Overall.

Helpful links will be posted here.

Chris I read this about 2 yrs ago with a group. I'll try to drop in periodically to comment. Can't say I'm a great fan of Russian authors, although this is supposed to be one of the greatest of all time.

message 5: by Kim (new) - rated it 3 stars

Kim (skullfullofbooks) Very excited to start this one! I get nervous about the Russian authors because i hear they can be difficult to complete. But I can probably digest it in 2-3 months.

aPriL does feral sometimes (cheshirescratch) Very interesting book. Read it a few years ago, and it surprised me by the breadth of its different subjects. I had thought it was only about a murder!
