20.9 â€ Moderator’s Pet â€ Stefu’s Task: Falling for Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ Tools

This task explores some of the great features of goodreads.com. I love exploring the different areas on the website. Pick one of the three options and read one book for that option:

Option 1: September Genre Browsing
This September I will finish all the requirements to become a CPA. The CPA designation is one of the most recognized in business. To celebrate with me, read one of the top “Business books using goodreads genre pages. In the Explore dropdown menu, click on “Genres. On the right column under “Browse, click on “Business. Scroll down to the bottom where it says “Popular Business Books and click “More Popular Business Books… These are the most popular books shelved as “Business. Read one of the books from the first page of the list.

Option 2: October Award Winners
Halloween is my favorite holiday—I even take time off work around Halloween so I can participate in all of the festivities. Best of all is reading scary books! The Bram Stoker Award is a recognition presented by the Horror Writers Association for superior achievement in horror writing. Navigate to www.goodreads.com/award to view a list of different literary awards. Click on “Bram Stoker Award on the first page to view some Bram Stoker award winners and nominees. Read any of the Bram Stoker award winners listed on any of the pages. Be careful not to read a nominee (list of nominees starts on page 7 of Bram Stoker list).
Note: to count for this task, the book’s main page must list the Bram Stoker Award under Literary awards.

Option 3: November â€ Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ Authors
This year my wife’s birthday is on Black Friday—a dangerous combination! Her favorite author is Nicholas Sparks. Because Nicholas Sparks is a “ŷ±¦ÓéÀ Authorâ€ he can add his own books to shelves. To look at his shelves you can go to his main author page and find his shelves in the left column. For this option choose one the following:
A: Read a book by Nicholas Sparks; or
B: Read a book that is on one of his shelves

Note: Please make sure that any book chosen conforms to all Seasonal Reading Challenge rules. The mere presence of a book on any of these lists does not guarantee that it will work for the challenge.

Note: Books with genres “Graphic Novel, “Sequential Art, “Comics, and “Manga that conform to all other SRC rules may be used for this task.

Thanks for that link, Deedee. I was able to use the "Winners by Name" tab at the top of the page to find an alphabetic list of authors, so I could easily locate my favorites.

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 4432 comments Question .... must we read the EXACT edition noted on the list (either the most popular business books or the Bram Stoker award or Nicholas Sparks's shelf) .. or will any edition of the book do?

message 9: by Book Concierge (new)

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 4432 comments For Option 1 - The Millionaire Next Door

Please verify ... it's currently the last title on page 1 of the list.
/shelf/show/...

Deana (ablotial) | 276 comments Just want to be sure -- on Sparks' page I see 14 books he has reviewed... those are the ones I could choose from?

message 11: by Hina (new)

Hina (hinaj) | 677 comments I am going to go with Option 1: Getting Things Done: The Art of Stress-Free Productivity by David Allen.
It is on page 1, and its pretty high up on the first page, but just in case it falls off. Can you verify its on page 1 of /shelf/show/...

The edition doesn't matter. Read any edition as long as the book is listed.

The Millionaire Next Door will work. Definitely read that, it's a great book!

For the November options, yes. You can choose from any of those 14 books or read a Nicholas Sparks book. You may also choose from the September or October options.

Nicole | 1295 comments I just want to double check that Wonder is acceptable since it has Children's on the main page. I think so but I struggle with correctly interpreting AR data! Thanks!

Um... I am not sure how that all works yet. I haven't looked into the change for using "Children's" books. You may want to post a general question in the general help thread. But in the meantime I will look into it.

It's not that hard.

YOu enter the Name or ISBN number of the book into the AR page. Then you come to a page which shows some basic data of the book, like name, author, etc

One line beginns with a little question mark and then with IL, and there is the data you need to see if the book is usable.

For Wonder the datas are:

IL: MG - BL: 4.8 - AR Pts: 11.0

The rules state that a book with a IL rating of MG must have at least a BG rating of 5.0 or higher. As this book only has a BL-rating of 4.8, it cannot be used for this task.

But as it has a AR rating of 11.0 it could be used for one 5-point task.

That's what I thought! But I still wanted confirmation I read it correctly. :) thanks

EShay Fagan (eshay11) | 569 comments For option 1, could I get confirmation that Start with Why: How Great Leaders Inspire Everyone to Take Action and Crucial Conversations: Tools for Talking When Stakes are High are both on the first page of "popular business books." I can't decide which one to read!

Here's the link to the list.
