Kit Carter | 5 comments the protag has moved to our realm with his mother because she fell in love with a human? or the dad was the fairy and mum was human. but the son didn't know, just knew his dad left. but his mom gets sick and she needs to go back to the fairy realm to be helped. and he goes with her and learns more about his life there, but eventually has to come back or gets banished back to our realm. he learns more about his family there and he develops more powers, and then when he goes back, he lose the power and is really upset because of it. and i think when he goes home, he loses all the scars he'd gained while in the other realm. the cover im pretty sure was white/had red on it and I THINK there's either a motif IN the book or ON the book with butterflies. i think it was written by a female author.

i read it about eight years ago, i borrowed it from the library over the summer. the book probably wasn't any older than maybe five years?? pretty sure it was published in the us, and it was definitely in english.

Kit Carter | 5 comments No, that’s not it *sad face* but it sounds interesting nonetheless!

Kit Carter | 5 comments oh! i think the mother was of the other realm (maybe they were elves?) and they had to leave when the boy (protag) was like 7?? And when he goes back, people start telling him stories that he doesn't fully remember because of age or whatever, but things slowly start coming back. but they were FORCED to leave, so it's like a big no no that they've returned and they're like. hiding from the authorities or whatever the equivalent was there.

Kit, please post a new comment if you're still looking for this book - or if you found it.

Kit (OP) was last active on the site in December 2019. Moving to Abandoned folder.

Kit Carter | 5 comments actually, yes i am!! i was just recently thinking about this book and i completely forgot that i'd posted to this thread.

i did remember some details. he went back to his mother's realm to save her (from illness or that realm idr), and he had scars in the human realm but not in this other realm, and when he first gets back to the human realm, he's got lots of weird feelings about it. mirrors are prominent in the story but idr if that's how they travelled between realms or not. i know the ending was bittersweet, and there's some important scene when he's new in the other realm that he follows these people he's met into a large house where they're preparing food for some big deal dinner, but the exact details are a little fuzzy. i would've read it around 2012/2013.

Capn | 3462 comments It doesn't sound like the same book, but there are enough similarities to mention it:

because teen boy, other realm, mother there, bittersweet ending - portal fantasy, same publication range. :) Parker's book has fencing and a student teacher as well.

Lots of other suggestions on that thread to scan through. :) Jump to list here, if you like: /topic/menti...

Kit, I copied some book details to the topic header and added a spoiler alert. Feel free to edit it.

Becca (beccalikesbooks) | 5377 comments Pucker by Melanie Gideon, maybe? This review is quite detailed and there are some interesting similarities to your description, especially the bit about his scars, and there is a butterfly on the front, but not sure if it's an exact match - /review/show...

Becca's suggestion of Pucker by Melanie Gideon sounds very promising.

Google Books preview:

- References to boy's scars, mirrors, etc.

Amazon's description:
- "Thomas Quicksilver (born Thomas Gale) has lived half his 17 years with burn scars that earned him the nickname Pucker. However, neither the scars nor the change in his name is as traumatic as his adventures in the alternative world of Isaura, his birth home. There, Seers hold political power and failed or ruined humans immigrate only to become servants, or Changed, with no personal will. Thomas, who fled Isaura in childhood with his widowed mother, has adapted well to life in contemporary America. However, Serena is losing her life force and sends him on a mission to restore her Seerskin. Once Thomas returns to his homeland purportedly as one of the Changed he must avoid being identified by the natives, fight to keep alive his own will to find the Seerskin and return to Earth, become accustomed to his newly invoked movie-star good looks, and cope with other Changed ones, including a feisty girl with whom he falls in love. ..."

Darren Lee | 3 comments This might be either helpful or completely useless. But did this book have a spider in a crystal cave, as well as a wind "companion" and a lone farm?

I am currently in search of a book as well that follows the same plotline as your and I remember these few details about mine as well.

Darren Lee | 3 comments Kit, is it "The Lost Years Of Merlin" that is what mine ended up being.

Hope this helps

Thanks for the link, I created an account for literally just this thread, for now, so I'm not sure the ins and outs of the platform.
