Roman IM so confused the fuck?

SincerelyMC *SPOILERS*
I'm confused too. Basically, the "Others" are not aliens, they are humans. They made a bunch of people (Evan for example) believe that they were aliens and that they were sent to kill humans. Ringer evolved quickly because of Vosch (I think?) and now has powers like Evan. Vosch wants to get Evan because Evan fell in love and isn't doing his job anymore. Cassie is supposed to be "The Last Human" on Earth, and my prediction is that everyone else gets upgraded like Ringer did. Vosch wanted to use Ringer to get Evan back. That's what I think happened, at least, but I was just as confused as you. Gonna have to re-read again.

One of the biggest plot twists in history happened. Evan is not an alien. Vosch isn't an alien. I'm still confused. Were the aliens not on Earth YET? Or were there absolutely NO aliens on Earth? Like ever? That part got me confused. Ugh this book was way too short with honestly too much Ringer. She really just repeated and rambled on about her theories and her past. It got annoying. But other than that this book was amazing. I will seriously be passed off if Rick makes this a trilogy. He gave us more questions rather than answer them.

I don't think any aliens were on earth at all. Ringer kept questioning things like, "Why would the Others wait until NOW of all times, to kill off all the humans?" She didn't think it made any sense, and I guess she was right. The only thing Rick never really answered were these questions: If these people ARE human, what was their motivation to kill off the rest of the world? Why did they inject people and make them think they were aliens? HOW did they inject them?

A lot of it was just really confusing. I guess the third book will tell all..hopefully. And you're right about the trilogy thing. I'm gonna have a party if it's a series.

Joec Ikr just finished reading it and I'm confused as fuck. When I got this book I thought that we would at least find out how Cassie and the guys would be able to defeat such odds but damn... I just don't know what to expect from this final book... Great book though!

Julia I'm not sure if the "the aliens aren't aliens, they're just humans killing their own species" theory is just that, a theory, or if it's actually true. I think Rick is writing these books for the purpose of making more questions than answering them, to get his readers to think and make predictions and whatnot. I think this series (trilogy? Series? Trilogy? I'll be really happy if it's a series!) is one of those series that you can read over and over again and piece a new part of the puzzle together every time you read them.

Shoshanna *SPOILERS*

there were so many parts that I had to re-read because I wasn't sure what I was reading happened, like poundcake's death, and obviously when ringer was hit with the shock that 'the aliens' are just supercharged humans and they can die. I am excited to see where the series goes because it is juts that gripping where so much happens all at once, the first couple chapters were jam packed of one thing after another.
thoughts on grace? she seemed more powerful than the others.

Janie McMahan SOOOO MANY SPOILERS!!!

Ok, so what I really don't get:

1.why did Razor lead Ringer to Vosch? Was he working for Vosch the whole time? If that was the case then why did they still end up making hanky panky? Shouldn't she hate him?

2. So if there aren't any aliens and it's all just enhanced humans, then what about the "mothership" people saw in space? Is that just something that Vosch or whoever the heck is really in charge came up with and built, or is there really aliens but they've just done this to see what happens and they're observing?

3. Why? Why is this going on at all? If it's other humans, then what's the point of making the human race go extinct? Or if it is because of aliens, then why the heck are they even doing this?

Belle i think there are aliens but not on the actual earth and vosch and stuff are like comrades with the aliens and are helping them kill everyone.

message 10: by Mairead (last edited Oct 21, 2014 11:38AM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Mairead Maybe the aliens haven't even made contact with Earth yet and their just in the mothership (preparing? or something) and the Others (Vosch and his (human) people) made up the whole thing to like take over the world (at least until the real aliens invaded). But I guess if Vosch wasn't in league with Aliens then he would have to be pretty crazy and stupid to think his plan would work. I'm not saying it's likely but it's possible.

I have the same questions you do. If they are only humans then what is with the mothership? Is the we are actually humans thing just another move in Vosch's chess game or is it true? Also why would Grace and Evan seem to know each other at the fair if they are just supercharged humans? Grace acted like they were a thing years ago as aliens. She also does seem to be a lot stronger than other Silencers that have been introduced.

I have those exact same questions. Another thing I've been wondering about is why Evan was saying that Cassie was going to be the last human on Earth. If that's true, my prediction is that everyone else gets updated like Ringer did. And speaking of that, was that update evolution itself? I think evolution was mentioned somewhere..

Danielle readergirl100 wrote: "Janie wrote: "SOOOO MANY SPOILERS!!!

Yeah I think you are right Vosch said something about evolution, but he said Ringer was going through it faster because of him. Not sure what that means.

Vijay The thing that irked me the most was the weird sex at the end. I still cannot understand the point if it.

Erikka I'm so glad I'm not alone in being totally confused by the ending. I'm really hoping that Yancey fluffs this "no alien" theory out in the next book.

On the Razor issue, I'm pretty sure (and this is supposition) that he was just "doing as he was told" as a soldier in Vosch's army, but that he truly did have feelings for Ringer, so he tried to protect her after turning her back over to Vosch. Like, he begrudgingly did his job. That's the way I read it. What I didn't get was the unnecessary and unwarranted sex preceded by Razor burning a bunch of bodies. What was that all about?

It was a weird book with a weird ending...hoping for better in book 3.

Desertlass What I got out of it is that some power has been augmenting humans since before birth, but they haven't come to earth yet, to reduce the "risk". They are waiting until the remaining humans get to some point before they actually step foot on the planet. As Vosch said, it isn't about the ones who have died - that implies it is about the quality of those who remain.

Evan just won't die.

message 17: by Kyra (new) - rated it 5 stars

Kyra I'm very confused about the ending! Did Teacup die? Did Razor do the whole thing with the firearm to create a diversion so that Ringer could run?

Deborah SPOILERS -- I too am confused!! but I do agree with most everyone that there are no aliens, just some weird human plan to "save the planet" by killing off the weak, i.e., most of the people on earth, and enhancing a few strong ones like Evan and Ringer. And yes, Teacup did get shot. Did she die? Don't know.

Faith Limo I kind of explain it all here on my book review:

message 20: by [deleted user] (last edited May 17, 2016 10:39AM) (new)

Explain this to me: If Evan is not an alien how on earth can he ˝transfer˝ himself into another body (aka Cassie, in the book 1)?

message 21: by Alex (new) - rated it 5 stars

Alex Whelan He is an alien. I don't know how everyone got it confused than Evan was human. He is an Alien who woke in a human body, thus he is human and alien.

Adela True it confused me too. they're not aliens, then, instead humans who were deceived into thinking they were aliens. And now Vosch is using Ringer to get to Evan as he betrayed them.

Vijay Natira wrote: "I'm too shy to ask this but did Razor and Ringer have sex? O.o"

yup. That too of weird kind :|

well... Yancey wrote it like that.

message 25: by Bkd (new) - rated it 3 stars

Bkd The rats, man. We're the rats and that's why they're killing us off. That's the only thing I'm clear on after reading the book.

Those rats in that Hotel were eating away the walls, destroying the hotel so that they could survive and that's what humans are doing to the planet.

It gets a bit fuzzy for me after that.

I think the aliens (if there are even any) are trying to destroy the human psyche but keep the human body. Create a new species within the old one because we're essentially killing ourselves by not thinking of the future BUT I DON'T KNOW!

I just hope there's less 'Ringer' in the next book. She was so freaking frustrating.

Emilia I'm still a little hazy on the ending. Is Razor dead? I couldn't really tell.

message 27: by Sofi (new)

Sofi Wait! In which chapter did razor and ringer has sex?!

Angelina Crowe Chapter 81/82 Razor and Ringer have sex which begs to question where Zombie falls in all of this.

As for the Aliens VS Others thing, Vosch leads Ringer to believe that the Silencers and him are simply humans with advanced programming. Thus, Ringer is like Vosch and Evan now which implies the Others are not real.

However, the Others not being real does not make sense. If the aliens are not real, then where did the Mothership come from? Why did Evan and Grace have extended memories and connections? Evan was downloaded with SOMETHING from birth but what about Voche and all the other adults? If Voche and his adult followers are humans, when did their upgrades happen and why are they so determined to eliminate and torture the human race so methodically? -I think these authority figures must belong to the Others bc they have such a united way of thinking (aka anti humans) This being said, I think Voche is lying and/or manipulated Ringer into thinking the Others aren't real. I think the Others do exist and there is another reason (that we don't yet know) why the Others are methodically killing everyone. There is grander plan that is unknown to the readers & unknown to Ringer. Recall the conversation between Ringer and Voche: Voche asks Ringer, "Why engineered-enhanced, delusional puppets like Evan Walker? A rock is so much more simple and direct," and Ringer responds with "I'm not sure. But I think it has something to do with luck." Then, Voche seems pleased with Ringer's answer which is never a good thing. I think he is happy bc he has managed to further manipulate her. Ultimately, there is a bigger chess game going on here and I dont think we as readers are supposed to understand what's happening yet!

It's near the end of the book. Chapter 81 I think. The book never actually says it happened but it implies it a lot.

lol at first I was confused too but I think it happened to sort of emphasize the point of how love is unpredictable? Like I would never have guessed, of all the things to happen, that Ringer would have sex, especially after all that happened to her

message 34: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa Washington The Others are still on the mothership and have remained there this whole time. They have been watching everything play out according to their plan before they leave and occupy Earth. All the "There really is no Others/Aliens, and we humans are actually the monsters behind everything" theories are interesting to me, but it would be far too cliche on so many levels. I feel like Rick really wanted to have a fresh story that departs from this trend. This makes the most sense to me if he is sticking with a literal alien invasion story. They have extinguished most of humanity, and they have manipulated the remaining survivors (with implanted technology) to finish the job. This goes along with some of the characters musings in the book about all the risks. All the Others have to do is stay on the mothership and play the waiting game. I see the main showdown happening on the mothership.

message 35: by Fred (new)

Fred Barriskell I think I got a grasp on it. The aliens are not here yet. We don't know if they are pure consciousness or what but I do know Evan, Vosch, Grace are not aliens. They were implanted with a program to make them Think they are aliens. They're doing the dirty work of the aliens, hence the "risk" thing. They aren't taking any yet by not downloading or setting foot on the earth yet. It's all a mind job to get us to whipe ourselves out. Think of it as Evan and Vosch being hypnotized. (Chance for Vosch to be saved maybe, be a real hero). Evan and Cassie have not had sex. Razor and ringer definitely did. Razor killed teacup to set ringer free of her obligation or promise. Yes he was working for Vosch but probably had real feelings for her. Hey the apocalypse is a messy place. Don't feel bad if you feel like you don't have all the answers because the author is probably still figuring it all out himself.

Maria SPOILERS IF YOU HAVE NOT FINISHED THE BOOK

Okay here's what I got from that ending...

1. The Others that are on Earth (ex. Evan, Grace) are humans who possess the 12th System (Ringer also possesses the 12th System). However, these Others also have a program in their brain which leads them to believe that they are aliens (through false memories of them coming from another planets, having a native language etc...) that are here to destroy the human race.
2. Vosch is the only Other working from Earth that actually has an alien conciousness, which is why he knows what is going on and is able to explain this all to Ringer.
3. The aliens do exist but they are still on the Mothership because the risk of them coming on Earth to wipe out the human race is too high when they can easily manipulate people like Evan and Grace to act like the aliens.
4. Razor is not evil but worked for Vosch because he couldn't face the truth (like how Ben did in the first book) although he ended up helping Ringer in the end.
5. Evan was the flaw in their plan. Their system malfunctioned when Evan fell in love with Cassie and couldn't shoot her because the true human part of him was overriding the instinct they gave him to destroy the human race.

There is also a theory that there are actually no aliens and this is just a plan by humans to help upgrade the human race.

On the last page of the book...

1. Razor shot Teacup (whether that was accidental i.e. he was aiming for someone else, or intentional I don't know).
2. The recruit shot Razor.
3. Ringer fled the scene.

Predictions for the next book...

1. Something involving Cassie, since she is sort of the centre of the series and the cause of everything that has happened (the story stars with Cassie talking about being the last human on Earth so I think this will tie in with the ending).
2. When Vosch and Ringer are talking about love being the only weakness and love being irrational and this quote follows

"Beside me, Razor's breath. Before me, Teacup's uplifted face." (294)

This means that Ringer loves Razor and Teacup. Vosch is going to save Razor and Teacup (remember how when Grace and Poundcake were fighting in the hotel and Grace told Poundcake that they had technology that could save him) and use them as leverage against Ringer.
3. Something involving the Mothership coming for Grace on the Equinox will be involved.
4. And I've just got this bad feeling Ben is going to die. I think Rick Yancey said on his twitter that main characters will die and I've got a bad feeling its going to be Ben.

krystal The rats, man. We're the rats and that's why they're killing us off. That's the only thing I'm clear on after reading the book.

Seriously. That's all I've got as well. That and, like some others, too much Ringer not enough Ben (or Cassie) for that matter. Can we also talk about Ben's DRAMATIC character change? He was like unstoppable and fierce in book 1 and now he may or may not be dying of grief?

message 44: by [deleted user] (new)

omg YAAASS

Marcy As for Ringer and Razor, it turned out to be a lie set up by Vosch. Vosh knows Ringer very well that he has predicted how she will react on the whole thing and it was planned by Vosch from the beginning to test the 12th system and it has been planned that Razor will deliver Ringer to Vosch in the end.

Though the whole thing was plotted, I believe Razor never pretended in most of his exchanges with Ringer. Everything he said about himself were never lies. Like he said, everything he said was true except for the "big important stuff" that he has to hide from Ringer.

What they had was real and they genuinely fell in love with each other.

They cant communicate properly with each other because they know they are being watched but they are both aware about how they feel. Ringer knows it and thats how it leads to the scene of them having sex in the end.

I seriously like Ringer and Razor's plot and I like them more than I liked Ringer and Ben.

message 46: by [deleted user] (new)

Ismail This is just messed up after all those hours spent reading the 1st and the 2nd book it appears that the aliens never came to Earth they just uploaded a freaking software in some of humans!!who would have expected that????

mingming😽 I AGREE WITH RINGER HAVING A LOT OF POV ... BUT WAIT DID RAZOR DIE!!???? I LIKED HIM THO so sad..

Oh, Teacup is VERY dead. I'm pretty sure she got shot in the head :(. Also Razor is dead, unless he survives a gun shot to the chest. Razor did it so that Ringer could escape Vosch. Teacup was the string Vosch used to control Ringer and once teacup was dead Razor knew Ringer would run, and be free of Vosch's control.
