The genre of the month is Horror, but there are some great nominations for the other group reads this month, as well. Will you read with the group? Or do you have a plan of your own this month?

** Remember to Save something creepy for the Readathon at the end of October!

message 3: by Camille (new)

Camille (camillesbookishadventures) I'm just carrying on with my TBR pile. I will get to reading The Wonderful Wizard of Oz when whoever borrowed it finally returns it to the library (been waiting since the end of August...). And then I'll probably pick a couple of books from the Group Reads.
I don't do creepy/horror so I'll just read from my TBR pile for the readathon.

message 6: by Roseanne (new)

Roseanne | 1239 comments I just started A Storm of Swords so I guess that is going to be most of the month. I am on hold for the audio of Reached and am next up. I am not planning anything else for October.

message 7: by Aitziber (new)

Aitziber I usually just use a random number generator to pick from the list I created for 2014. But as the list grows smaller, I'm going to organize the remaining books by genre. Next month, I'm doing all LGBT:

Stonewall: The Riots That Sparked the Gay Revolution by David Carter
Midnight Cowboy by James Leo Herlihy
Clay's Way by Blair Mastbaum
Memoirs of Hadrian by Marguerite Yourcenar

:)

message 8: by Amber (new)

Amber (amberterminatorofgoodreads) I want to read Jane Slayre: The Literary Classic with a Blood-Sucking Twistfor sure next month, then got some ebooks too:
The Seer
Pivot
Dead and Beloved
Eva Wilde Vs. The Open Road(on wattpad)
and don't know what else besides that.

Tracey | 916 comments I have some books on my physical bookshelf that I have to read.

We Were Liars - Finished in September

Melissa Coyle | 1557 comments Chase, let me know what you think of The Black Dahlia.

message 13: by Karen (new)

Karen | 289 comments I want to read two books that have been on my physical bookshelf for a while now: World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War and NOS4A2.

Apart from that I will work in some group reads and the like. I'll post again when I figure those out :)

message 14: by Kassandra (new)

Kassandra | -1 comments Karen - have you seen the movie World War Z? The book is very interesting, although I found it quite dry. It has a different perspective than the movie in that the book starts after Patient Zero has been identified. I hope you enjoy it!

I did see the movie, and found it a tad annoying. I didn't mind that it was a "non-traditional" zombie movie. I DID mind that the Caucasian American male ran around the world (somewhat unrealistically) saving the day, while all the people/nations of color were portrayed as superstitious and backward.

I have heard that the book is very different, and much better so I am going in as open-minded as I can be.

message 21: by Polly (new)

Polly Clarke | 56 comments I'm going to attempt to read a whole load of library books that I've pre-ordered (due to collect Thursday)which includes some of the Richard and Judy autumn reading selections but if I was to choose one book of horror, I hope to read The Girl with All the Gifts

message 29: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Coyle | 1557 comments I know, I really need to finish four other library books that I scheduled for September. (As I am fondling the new library books and reading the back cover). :D

message 30: by Laura (new)

Laura | 138 comments I at least have 2 books I want to finish and there is another library book that I can start that isn't on my October list.

message 31: by Becca (new)

Becca Tyler (scrappybec) | 296 comments I won't devote the entire month to the genre challenge, but I plan to read:
Dracula (Stoker)
The Invisible Man (Wells)
Doctor Sleep (King)

The readathon sounds like fun. I'll have to get a list ready for that.

message 32: by Candy (new)

Candy Tiley | 93 comments I am going with the classic - Dracula. But there are reasons. I finished reading "The History" last year and I read "A Discovery of Witches" this year so I feel that I am somewhat familiar with vampire lore. However, I realize I have never read the actual book so I am going to read it this year (finally)!

message 34: by Laura (new)

I thought I was being ambitious with 3 planned books & an audiobook.
I am impressed!

I'm going to listen to Dracula, read the YA Selection, a Monster Calls?, NOS4A2 and a few others I already have waiting.

I'll be fortunate to finish 3 in a month

Miss, I'm looking forward to Dracula too this month!

Amber (amberterminatorofgoodreads) I got recommended to read Hell House for All Hallow's Read so got that, Jane Slayre, and more.

message 40: by Kassandra (new)

Kassandra | -1 comments October is going to be a busy month for me so I was trying to stay away from making a plan...but now that it's here, I'm too excited to not have a rough outline! Here's the rough (and ever flexible) list as of right this moment:

The Book of Joe
One Last Thing Before I Go (Yes, I'm in a bit of a Tropper phase!)
The Expats - finish
The 6th Extinction
Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children Readathon
Dracula Readathon
Frankenstein Readathon
The Night Has Teeth Readathon

message 41: by Amber (new)

I highly recommend Middlemarch. Just terrific writing!

message 43: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Coyle | 1557 comments Sandy, when you decide to read Middlemarch let me know! I started five pages in June and never got any farther and not because it wasn't great, but Summer got in the way.

message 44: by Holly, That Geeky One (last edited Oct 06, 2014 02:45PM) (new)

Holly (hollycoulson) | 1949 comments Mod
My list for October. Probably highly ambitious considering all the reading I have to do for University (background reading etc).

University Reading:
- Manhattan Transfer by John Dos Passos
- The Book of Illusions by Paul Auster

Horror Challenge:
- The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving - READ 2/10
- The Turn of the Screw by Henry James - READ 2/10
- Dracula by Bram Stoker
- The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde
- The Castle of Otranto by Horace Walpole
- The Bloody Chamber and Other Stories by Angela Carter

Others:
- Maurice by E. M. Forster - READ 7/10
- Gone Girl: A Novel by Gillian Flynn

I might actually attempt to find an audiobook of Dracula. I do have a few 10/15 minute walks to my lectures and seminars. Might pair it up with the actual book though.

Amber (amberterminatorofgoodreads) Enjoy holly. Legend of sleepy hollow is a pretty short and good read. I liked the disney cartoon of it though. :-)
