What do you intend to read during the month of October?

I am aiming to read:

Storberry by Dan Padavona Storberry by Dan Padavona
The Soul and the Seed (The Kyrennei #1) by Arie Farnam The Soul and the Seed by Arie Farnam
I and You by Beverly Garside I and You by Beverly Garside
Hear Me Scream (Sorrows, #1) by R.M. James Hear me Scream by R. M. James

Hope to be able to read them all!

Kandice I'm impressed that you have four books lined up! My M.O. is to finish a book on my Nook and then just browse my shelves for my next read.
I finish an audio book in the car and either have a new audio on my backseat that I checked out in the last week or so, pop in one I already own or try to find time to get in the library when they are open to check out my next.
I rarely have a plan!

Well, it helps that all of them are r4r, I wouldn't feel right reading something till I finished those :)

But hey, there's always the edit button xD

I mostly created this folder in case people wanted to do buddy reads. Often times we have the same books waiting on the shelf so some folks might want to read them at the same time. I have never done a buddy read myself, must be an interesting experience!

Nice list, Nolan! Neverwhere is the one I have read but I really want to read Unwind soonish, it sounds very interesting!

I'd love to, and I can clear my reading schedule almost anytime, because I don't really have one!

I'm a read by the seat of my pants kind of gal. ;)

I've never read Anna K or 5 weeks in a balloon, but I've read the others. A few many times.

My library book club is reading Frankenstein in October in honor of Halloween. Maybe we could discuss it here too!

Melaslithos | 1645 comments Neverwhere is one of my favorite books ever! But I am a big big fan of Neil Gaiman. I love how he manages in his story to make things slip little by little from the real world to the fantasy world. The change is so smooth. And everything he describes and talks about seems so vivid. I was even so disappointed when, after a moving, my book got stuck in stock (my mum packed all my books before I could get to them), that I re-bought the book, since I couldn't wait to get my hands on it again.

But coming back to the subject here, this month, I'm planning to read:
Le Horla by Guy de Maupassant The Soul and the Seed (The Kyrennei #1) by Arie Farnam Chainge by Ken Dean Frankenstein by Mary Shelley

A friend is making a short film of one of the novellas in Le Horla, so I decided to re-read this anthology once more.
The Soul and the Seed and Chainge are R4R.
Frankenstein is the October read for the "Reading the Classics" group. It's a Halloween Special. Looks like several book clubs had the same idea ;-)

I'm leaving on holidays tomorrow, and have some long flights waiting for me, so I hope I will have time to read more than this. I'll pick the rest as things go (I love the invention of e-readers, I don't need to pack 10 books with me such as I used to!).

message 11: by Kandice (new)

Kandice I love e-readers too, and not having to pack gobs of books is just one of the reasons.

Have a safe trip.

Sure, I'd be open to that. I'm always out of synch with pretty much every group read, so it'd be interesting to try it out.

R4r is read for review. Authors give you free books in exchange for a review.

Then there are GR giveways, their first reads program. When you win, it is sort of expected that you post a review after reading the book.

There are a lot of great Neil Gaiman novels. I would still recomend starting with Coraline ^_^

You got a copy of Chainge? Lucky! I only saw a topic offering 3 and wasn't on time :(

I am reading Soul and the Seed after Storberry though.

Melaslithos | 1645 comments Ana wrote: "There are a lot of great Neil Gaiman novels. I would still recomend starting with Coraline ^_^ "

Coraline is great (like all Gaiman stories - OK, I am not at all objective here), but Neverwhere is still my favorite one. But I have to admit that Coraline condenses all the typical "Gaimaness" in a great short story, so it's certainly a good start.

Ana wrote: "You got a copy of Chainge? Lucky! I only saw a topic offering 3 and wasn't on time :("

Yes, I was lucky to be quick enough to get one copy. The blurb looks really interesting.

Even though I would love to set this up and even be part of one, I have had no experience with this. How do you propose I should organize it? New folder for Buddy Reads? Each topic would be the book title? People should give a time frame to read it or to start reading it? What else would be important?

I don't have any experience in this matter either, but wouldn't it fit in the "Book Discussions" folder?

Hmm I guess.. when I created that folder it was more meant for people to discuss a book as they read it or if they have finished it. Depending on each option, it would have a SPOILER tag in the title.

But I guess we could start a topic with the book title and ask for buddy reads there, before even discussing it?

I am probably overthinking the whole thing, I often do that, unfortunately. The problem is I don't exactly know how the whole buddy read concept works. The most I have seen is the people participating in it commenting in each other status updates.

message 20: by Kandice (new)

Kandice I think an entire category of Buddy Reads would be good, and spoilers should be clearly marked or hidden. I've been in groups where we had 2 thread for each group read. One spoiler free and one where you could freely spoil and not worry about hiding anything.

Personally, I don't like a structured reading schedule because I read fairly quickly. I don't like having to remember what happened BEFORE page 26, etc, when discussing. Besides, a rigid schedule feels like an assignment, not enjoyment. O_o

BTW, I finished Unwind last night but would still love to discuss it as others read.

message 21: by Ana (new)

Ana (anaslair) | 2312 comments Mod
Then if we create a folder just for Buddy Reads and each topic in it for a book, how does that differ from Book Discussions? Or do we not discuss the book in the appropriate topic in Buddy Reads folder and it's just for setting up the Buddy Read?

message 22: by Kandice (new)

Kandice My understanding is that the difference between the Book Discussion folder and the Buddy reads folder is that in BD you discuss particular books even if you read them a long time ago. You don't really read them "together".

Buddy Reads you try to find a person (or people) to read along with you and discuss as you go, even if it isn't at the same pace. So a thread started with a title will probably be a request for a buddy, then when you have one (or more) you decide when to start reading and then you also create a Spoiler thread for the same title.

Does that make sense? I don't think there are any real "rules" it just seems to work well.

Hah! I hope you enjoy that first one.

I'm concurrently reading Harry Potter #4, Christine by Stephen King, and the Arkane books by J Thorn. And I'm trying to squeeze in a re-read of book #2 in Robert Jordan's Eye of the World anthology.

I am enjoying it very much, thank you eheh
I am however beginning to believe 4 books in one month was a bit too enthusiastic of a goal!

message 25: by Melaslithos (last edited Oct 13, 2014 01:59PM) (new)

Melaslithos | 1645 comments So, I've finished the following books (you can find the reviews on my profile or my corner here):
Le Horla by Guy de Maupassant The Soul and the Seed (The Kyrennei #1) by Arie Farnam Chainge by Ken Dean
which makes 3 out of the 4 I intended to read, and only half of the month has passed.

Unfortunately, I am starting a really busy week, which probably means no reading for me this week.

I am still planning on reading Frankenstein and will keep it for my return flight.

I have also asked for Hear Me Scream, to read and review.

Since the coming two weeks are going to be pretty busy, this might have been a bit optimistic, but I still hope to have time for all these.

I saw that some of were planning to read Hear Me Scream this month. Have you started it yet? If yes, is it good? If not, when are you planning to read it? Maybe we could read it together?

message 26: by Ana (new)

Ana (anaslair) | 2312 comments Mod
Ooh do you want to do a buddy read of Hear me Scream?
I am currently reading The Soul And The Seed and then I will read I and You (I am really picky about reading and reviewing in the order I got the request) but Hear me Scream is on the list. I can't give an estimate of when I intend to start it though :S Maybe I could post a while before I finished I and You?

message 27: by Melaslithos (new)

Melaslithos | 1645 comments That's an idea. Anyway, I'm pretty busy currently, so no time for reading either. Take your time with your other books first, and I suppose we can just post here when we are ready to read "Hear Me Scream", and check if the other is still interested?

message 28: by Kandice (new)

Kandice I am planning on starting The Knife of Never Letting Go tonight. I need to read Frankenstein for about the 10th time for my library book club that meets the 22nd.

I also need to finish Pay It Forward and 20th Century Ghosts.

I know I will read others before October is over, but I don't want to plan that far ahead. ;)

Hey guys!
Have you managed to read everything you set out to read?
I am halfway through the last book of my list.

This is what I have read this month:

Hear Me Scream (Sorrows, #1) by R.M. James (halfway through, hope to be done by the end of the month)

The Most Ferocious of Creatures by Chris Sykes (short story or maybe it's a novella I don't know, it's fairly short, very funny, really enjoyed it)

Seven to Die by T.G. Roberts (my first netgalley book, didn't enjoy it much)

Caterwaul by Scott Laurange (short story, enjoyed it a lot)

Reckoning (The Breach #1) by Katheryn J. Avila (it was pretty good)

Bleak Ninety-Three by Scott Kaelen (short story, it was ok)

I and You by Beverly Garside (graphic novel, not really my thing but was a bit thought provoking)

O Jogo da Contabilidade by Darrell Mullis (basically accounting principles for dummies, helped me a lot, though I still hate it and don't get a lot of it)

When Gods Awaken A Short Story of Biblical Proportions by Scott Kaelen (didn't like it at all)

The Soul and the Seed (The Kyrennei #1) by Arie Farnam (pretty interesting, am interested in the sequels)

Storberry by Dan Padavona (pretty scary but could use some work imo)

Wow looks like I managed to read a lot more than I initially intended! It's been a good month, not sure if I will ever be able to match it again, real life is catching up :(

message 31: by Gavin (last edited Oct 28, 2014 01:40AM) (new)

Gavin (thewalkingdude) | 110 comments I did manage to read what I had planned... well I still have Frankenstein left, but I changed some things to accommodate a Halloween-themed readathon with another group: I moved Full dark, no stars for next month. So, this is what I've read this month:
The Age of Innocence
Anna Karenina
Little Women
Rage
Mile 81
The Dune
The Invisible Man
Fahrenheit 451

That's very nice, Gavin. I need to get my hands on Rage and The Dune. Have you read the paperback versions?

message 35: by Kandice (last edited Oct 28, 2014 02:41PM) (new)

Kandice I have both of those in paperback, and Rage in HB as well, but that's only because I've been "collecting" his since 82.

Some King books (or particular versions of them) are getting harder and harder to find.

Kandice Ana wrote: "Yeah I don't get why there aren't new editions."

I understand The Bachman Books being out of print because of Rage, but otherwise you know there's a big enough audience to buy them!

On the other hand, I've mentioned this somewhere, I hate some of the covers they choose for re-releases.
Cujo by Stephen King as an example. That entire line. Blech!

I bought the Bachmnan Books but it was an earlier edition that didn't include Rage :( It's this one: The Bachman Books by Stephen King

Luckily I have a different edition for Cujo hehe - still unread.

message 39: by Kandice (new)

Kandice I didn't realize The Bachman book were being printed without Rage! Shows what I know.

I have the origonal HB of Cujo and the first paperback which has such an awesome cover, but I can't find it here. X(

Cujo is a great read made more so by the fact that he wrote it in a cocaine induced mania and has no recollection of doing so! There are no chapters or breaks so a hard one to put down.

message 40: by Kandice (new)

Kandice My favorite cover for Cujo:

message 41: by Ana (new)

I think it was by SK's request. He didn't want Rage featured in Bachman Books after a certain time, no idea why.

Sounds like I will need to read Cujo when I have lots of free time, maybe during vacation eheh

message 42: by Kandice (new)

Kandice King definitely made them stop publishing it after Columbine, but I thought they just published the other three separately. I didn't know they published the Bachman Books minus Rage.
