Sara This prompt is going to take some research to determine the personal situation of the authors, but you all are so great at finding things. Add your best selections for trans and nonbinary authors!

Joy (clarkphd) | 14 comments Here's a good list:

message 5: by Ellie (new)

Ellie (patchworkbunny) | 1747 comments Some books I've enjoyed by trans authors:
Pet
All the Birds in the Sky
All of the Above (Juno has written loads, some of them are listed under her birth name)
If I Was Your Girl

I think Sarah Gailey and Annalee Newitz are non-binary.

message 6: by Jackie (new)

Jackie | 38 comments If you like horror, I recommend Poppy Z Brite. He writes under his birth gendered name but transitioned.

message 7: by Jenn (new)

Jenn (jenntendo64) | 56 comments I’m going to read Pet by Akwaeke Emezi for this one! Or Freshwater, their other novel.

message 8: by Jai (new)

Jai | 202 comments Gender Queer this is on my tbr shelf so I think I'll use it for this prompt

message 9: by Chrissi (last edited Nov 18, 2019 10:12AM) (new)

Chrissi (clewand84) | 237 comments Texts from Jane Eyre: And Other Conversations with Your Favorite Literary Characters is a fun re-imagining. I may pick up The Merry Spinster: Tales of Everyday Horror. The Book Riot list is a good one for suggestions!

message 10: by C.L. (new)

C.L. (eleventyone) | 7 comments I've wanted to read Believe Me: A Memoir of Love, Death, and Jazz Chickens by Eddie Izzard for a while, so I'm glad it fits here!

I read I Wish You All the Best by Mason Deaver this year for the own-voices prompt and it was sweet.

message 11: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 263 comments JY Yang and their Tensorate series would be eligible for this prompt.

Recently read Rivers Solomon and their book The Deep was very good (and quick).

message 12: by EllenZReads (last edited Nov 18, 2019 11:41AM) (new)

EllenZReads Good Boy: My Life in Seven Dogs

The author is trans.

message 13: by Stina (new)

Stina (stinalyn) | 464 comments Yoon Ha Lee is a trans man. I tried Ninefox Gambit and decided I'm not nearly smart enough to understand it, but maybe I will give Dragon Pearl a try.

I recommend the audio of this. His footnotes have footnotes! haha

Yes! The audiobook was so delightful. He’s such a treasure.

message 16: by Stephen (new)

Stephen | 32 comments I highly recommend Dreadnought which is a book about a trans superhero by a trans writer. Warning that she has been struggling to get the final book in the series written.

message 17: by Lexi (new)

Lexi I recommend both Ninefox Gambit if you like math in your SF (check trigger warnings esp. on later books) and any book by J.Y. Yang.

message 18: by Anica (last edited Nov 18, 2019 07:39PM) (new)

Anica (midknytowl) | 2 comments I was originally planning on reading The Map of Salt and Stars for a 2019 prompt, but ended up using a different book instead. Can't recommend it or not, since I haven't read it yet, but the author is trans.

message 19: by Erin (new)

Erin Perry Willis | 14 comments Some books by Trans or Nonbinary Authors I know of are:

Freshwater by Akwaeke Emezi
All the Birds in the Sky by Charlie Jane Anders
The City in the Middle of the Night by Charlie Jane Anders
So You Want to be a Robot and Other Stories by A. Merc Rustad

message 20: by Beth (new)

Beth (drippingfaucet) | 34 comments Read Tranny: Confessions of Punk Rock's Most Infamous Anarchist Sellout by Laura Jane Grace in 2019 for a book written by a musician and it was excellent.

I'll probably read Pet by Akwaeke Emezi since I read Freshwater last year and their writing is outstanding.

message 21: by Amanda (last edited Nov 19, 2019 12:13AM) (new)

Amanda | 20 comments If I Was Your Girl and Birthday by Meredith Russo were both fantastic!

message 22: by Allie (new)

Allie | 56 comments The Black Tides of Heaven is part of a series by J.Y. Yang who identifies as non-binary

message 23: by Eujean2 (last edited Nov 19, 2019 03:07PM) (new)

Eujean2 | 249 comments I second a lot of what was mentioned here:
All the Birds in the Sky
Dreadnought (ya)
The Black Tides of Heaven
Gender Queer (comic)
George (middle grade)
These are all great and a variety of genres.

Some other recommendations:
Gumballs (comic)
100 Crushes (comic)
Kim & Kim Vol. 1 (comic)
Fierce Femmes and Notorious Liars (I don't even know how to classify it, but it's really good)

Things I am contemplating reading:
Freshwater
Peter Darling
Over the Top: A Raw Journey to Self-Love
The Future of Another Timeline
Paul Takes the Form of a Mortal Girl
Nevada
I Wish You All the Best

message 24: by poshpenny (new)

poshpenny | 1916 comments Allie wrote: "The Black Tides of Heaven is part of a series by J.Y. Yang who identifies as non-binary"

Ah yes! I've been wanting to read this!

Also Alex Gino is releasing a companion book to George next year, called Rick.

message 25: by Sheri (new)

Sheri | 917 comments Annalee Newitz is nonbianary, I’m pretty sure. They wrote Autonomous and The Future of Another Timeline.

I also really liked Lizard Radio
, think the author is nonbianary as well

Is All The Birds in the Sky a standalone novel?

I also highly recommend George by Alex Gino.

message 27: by Karin (last edited Nov 19, 2019 04:31PM) (new)

Karin Are we only going with authors who are alive today and use our contemporary terms or can we include authors who fit some of the definitions of nonbinary from the classics era? I ask because I have read all of Plato who writes the most about this sort of thing (so not going to reread him for this), but I am quite interested in the history of eunuchs and in what they had to say--some did this on their own by choice, it wasn't all little boys being forced to do this! I have a couple of authors who were eunuchs by choice. I realize that most of you probably know about this, but am explaining in case there is someone who doesn't (I have met people IRL who don't).

message 28: by Therese (new)

Therese | 133 comments I read this book for the prompt from last year on BookRiot Forever Your Girl is very good and sad but easy to read.

message 29: by Sheri (new)

Sheri | 917 comments Alisia, yes it is. Or at least the ending wraps up enough that you’re not left hanging, no idea if she intends to revisit it later. Her next book, City in the Middle of the Night feels like there needs to be a sequel.

message 30: by Kristen (new)

Kristen (kristen930) | 2 comments I am going to try and find a copy of “Hiding My Candy by Lady Chablis. It’s the same Lady Chablis from “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil 💃🏾

message 31: by Johanne (new)

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 1301 comments @Karin, I think it would be cool to go with older books. No reason not to, it just requires more research.

message 32: by Tori (last edited Nov 19, 2019 10:57PM) (new)

Tori (libroperdido) | 41 comments I recommend Rachel Gold. A friend of mine is a good friend of Rachel's and recommended her books to me. I've enjoyed what I've read so far.

message 33: by Jayasoorya (new)

Jayasoorya K E | 13 comments I have read Freshwater by Akwaeke Emezi and liked it. So hoping to read PET for this prompt

I’ve got a bunch of books on my “ideas list, but I’m leaning towards Little Fish by Casey Plett

I don’t know anything about the author, but I had it on my TBR already after a discussion in another group (I think!) or maybe I saw it on a BookRiot article or something ...

message 35: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca Kiefer | 118 comments For a more historical perspective from a trans author, I would recommend Self: A Study in Ethics and Endocrinology or Out of the Ordinary: A Life of Gender and Spiritual Transitions by Michael Dillon. He was the first person to receive a phalloplasty and also helped in the first medical transition of a transwoman.

message 36: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie | 39 comments for romance fans, Jay Northcote is one of my favourites :)

message 37: by Christine (new)

Christine H | 496 comments Sheri wrote: "Annalee Newitz is nonbianary, I’m pretty sure. They wrote Autonomous and The Future of Another Timeline."

Yup, they are nonbinary. And they are partners with Charlie Jane Anders, and the two of them have a podcast called "Our Opinions Are Correct," which is a lot of fun!

message 38: by Rachel (new)

Rachel (mrshurd) | 33 comments As of right now I have two choices I am going to decide between to read.
Texts from Jane Eyre: And Other Conversations with Your Favorite Literary Characters
Confessions of the Fox

I read it last year and loved it.

Stacey | 4 comments Karin wrote: "Are we only going with authors who are alive today and use our contemporary terms or can we include authors who fit some of the definitions of nonbinary from the classics era? I ask because I have ..."
I think it would be fantastic to read non-contemporary authors for this. It would help further the understanding that while the current discussion of non-binary gender is new, the experience is not.

message 41: by Siobhan (new)

MaryAnn (EmilyD1037) A Queer and Pleasant Danger, A Memoir by Kate Bornstein.

This is a non-fiction book about a Jewish boy who joins the Church of Scientology, Buddhism, becomes a lady after being a soldier, father and husband

message 43: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 263 comments There is a new release slated for 2020 by an author named Tanen Jones, whose GoodReads author profile says they identify as genderqueer. I’m not sure how accurate it is- I couldn’t find that blurb about the author anywhere else, but the book is called:

The Better Liar

if anyone wants to check it out.

message 44: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Eckler | 31 comments I'm looking forward to reading Tomorrow Will Be Different: Love, Loss, and the Fight for Trans Equality for this prompt.

Great, because I have dragged my feet over reading church fathers for years as I disagree with the politics and fighting that was going on back then, but I really ought to go beyond Greek philosophy, etc!!!

message 46: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (shadow2451) | 23 comments Eddie Izzard is not transgendered. He is an Executive Transvestite (as a stage persona).

message 47: by Nadine in NY (new)

Nadine in NY Jones | 9516 comments Mod
I thought maybe Eddie Izzard was non-binary but he says he’s transgender (which I don’t understand because it looks like he still uses he/him pronouns ?)

message 48: by Johanne (new)

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 1301 comments Well I believe how people want to be addressed differs. I met Meredith Russo a couple of years ago and she wanted to be adressed as 'she'.

message 49: by Drakeryn (last edited Nov 24, 2019 03:11PM) (new)

Drakeryn | 708 comments Elliot Wake is trans and writes dark contemporary novels. I've had his book Black Iris on my TBR a while.

(Side note: Is this enough pink for a pink cover? The flower's pink, but the text is more purplish to me.)

Black Iris by Leah Raeder

message 50: by poshpenny (last edited Nov 24, 2019 03:39PM) (new)

poshpenny | 1916 comments Sarah wrote: "Eddie Izzard is not transgendered. He is an Executive Transvestite (as a stage persona)."

I've seen Eddie live twice this decade, and he referred to himself as transgender both times. He's genderfluid. He was an Executive Transvestite because that was the best terminology he had at the time.

Nadine wrote: "I thought maybe Eddie Izzard was non-binary but he says he’s transgender (which I don’t understand because it looks like he still uses he/him pronouns ?"

Trans doesn't always mean one gender to the other, it can just mean not the one I was assigned.
