It's time to start those recommendations for the 2021 Newbery awards. If you come across something that is a contender for the Newbery give it a plug here!

Mary HD (marymaclan) | 100 comments And I've just skimmed the following nonfiction graphic novel: Astronauts: Women on the final frontier by Jim Ottaviani and Maris Wicks - WOW! (pub date tomorrow)

message 18: by Magdalena (new)

Magdalena | 25 comments It took me long enough to finish up my 2019 reading that I haven't read much from 2020 yet. I'm currently in the middle of The Mystwick School of Musicraft , which I think is my favorite Newbery contender so far. Some others that are high on my to-read list are From the Desk of Zoe Washington , When You Trap a Tiger, and A Home for Goddesses and Dogs.

message 19: by Josephine (new)

Josephine Sorrell (jothebookgirl) | 272 comments I have downloaded the ARC of Gennifer Choldenko’s Orphan Eleven and Rebecca Stead’s The List of Things That Will Not Change.

message 24: by Louie (new)

Louie | 47 comments I read Clean Getaway by Nic Stone last month and I really enjoyed it. The author has a great ability to blend history with contemporary times very well. The MC, Scoob, has a very distinct and relatable voice that helped bring the story to life and made the events of the novel seem more realistic.

message 25: by Richie (new)

Richie Partington (richiespicks) | 103 comments THE RISE AND FALL OF CHARLES LINDBERGH

Louie | 47 comments Josephine wrote: "I think I voted for the April read but seemed to have missed the winner. Can someone update me please?"

Sure, the winner and the group read for April is Here in the Real World by Sarah Pennypacker.

message 31: by Ivy (new)

Ivy Ninofranco | 19 comments Thanks Shari! I bought the hardcover, but let a student take it home before we left (and before I read it). I'm not sure I'll ever see it again. I can afford $0.99!

message 32: by Shari (Shira) (new)

Shari (Shira) | 86 comments So happy to help. Years ago, I made peace with books that children took home and did not return.

message 33: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Nagel | 91 comments Echo Mountain byLauren Wolk. My favorite so far and one of the best books I have read in a long time. Some of the most beautiful writing. Loved it.

Kelly Green's Book Review | 3 comments Agreed! Just finished this and it was amazing! Well developed characters, great storyline. Great message of going back to the basic, simple life during challenging times. Very timely for the current year.

message 35: by Josephine (new)

Josephine Sorrell (jothebookgirl) | 272 comments I loved the graphic novel When Stars Are Scattered by Victoria Jamison. I not a good judge of what is Newbery quality, I just like good literature and books my students will love.

message 36: by Shella (new)

Shella | 261 comments What did people think of On the Horizon by Lois Lowery? There was a lot of buzz about the The One and Only Bob and since its release I have not heard anything. I was very impressed by On the Horizon- I have not been able to read The One and Only Bob. I thought Mildred Taylor's series ending book was written for an older audience.

message 37: by LS (last edited May 26, 2020 03:33PM) (new)

LS Johnson | 102 comments ON THE HORIZON is on my “Best of 2020 list! Award worthy and definitely worth the read.

message 38: by Mae (new)

Mae | 2 comments The One and Only Bob was a fantastic read and definitely did justice to The One and Only Ivan. Really amazing, totally recommend it.

message 39: by Shella (new)

Shella | 261 comments I wish I could get my hands on it- I missed getting an ARC.

Very beautiful and very sad. An emotional read throughout.

message 41: by Shella (new)

Shella | 261 comments I would like the following titles for consideration: On the Horizon- Turtle Boy- Music for Tigers- BTW- how many titles contain the word tiger this year??

message 42: by Shella (new)

Shella | 261 comments I would also like to recommend Elephant's Girl by Celesta Rimington. Even though it was a very different story- I made lots of text connections to Beyond the Bright Sea. Hit the Road was hilarious- but I am not sure it would be considered for Newbery. With the exception of Dead End to Norvelt- quirky books don't get much consideration.

LS Johnson | 102 comments Shella wrote: "I would like the following titles for consideration: On the Horizon- Turtle Boy- Music for Tigers- BTW- how many titles contain the word tiger this year??"

So far I have seen HOW TO TRAP A TIGER, TIGER HEART and MUSIC FOR TIGERS. I guess it's the year of the Tiger!

I second Turtle Boy. I hope more ppl become aware of and want to read this book.

message 46: by Shella (new)

Shella | 261 comments Nancy Cavanaugh is the author of Hit the Road.

message 47: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Castellano | 15 comments I’ve been reading The House in the Cerulean Sea and it is just amazing! Can’t believe how well written it is. Great story!

message 48: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Castellano | 15 comments Not sure we are talking about the same book....and isn’t this for Newbery 2021, not 2022? It would be a wee bit hard to evaluate books for 2022 when they would need to be released in 2021 and this is 2020😁. The book I am referring to is by TJ Klune and was released in March 2020. As for it being an adult book, it is definitely not. It Is very much for children.

message 49: by Shella (new)

Shella | 261 comments I've seen it referred to for teens- do you think it fits the 14 and under group? The cover appears to be marketed to younger than adults- but that does not mean much. Interesting conflict.

message 50: by Laura (new)

Laura Harrison | 489 comments The House in the Cerulean Sea is being promoted and sold as an adult book.
